The folder includes worksheets, site plans, a narrative description of the garden, and other information.
General:
This 5,030 square foot formal garden,significantly smaller than the owners' previous property, includes antique garden ornaments as well as a deck design they loved and brought with them in 2003. A color palette limited to green, white and soft gray unifies the lawn, patio and deck. Topiary trees and shaped hedges inside the walls and beyond the deck also unify the space.
The lawn garden at the front of the house is bordered by topiary Mayten and Japanese maple trees, clipped boxwood hedges, and white New Guinea impatiens planted in containers, underplanted in Baby's tears, that leads to a reproduction Italian wall fountain. The patio with gray paving stone tiles alongside the house features more topiary trees and a border of clipped English boxwood. The deck at the back of the house, copied from the deck designed by landscape architect Thomas Church from their previous property, is bordered by low benches and a tall bayberry hedge.

Scope and Contents note:
Photographs made during Mary Vance Trent's time in Micronesia, including in Guam, Saipan, Palau, Yap, Pohnpei, and the Marshall Islands and Taipei. The images depict towns, buildings and other remains of the Japanese and Spanish occupations, boats, airplanes, houses and hotels, US military events, aerial views, and people (including residents and United States and United Nations delegates). The collection also includes some photographs made in Cape Cod, Boston, Washington, DC, and New Hampshire, as well as commercial postcards with images of Saipan and other Mariana Islands.
Biographical/Historical note:
Mary Vance Trent (1914-1998) was a foreign service officer for the State Department. She represented the US in the Pacific Islands, including in Samoa and Tonga (1969-1972), and acted as political advisor during the transition of Micronesia from a US territory to a municipality of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (1972-1974). Over her career, Trent acquired many Polynesian and Micronesian objects, some of which she donated to the Smithsonian.

The Silk Road: Connecting Cultures, Creating Trust

Introduction:
The Silk Road defines an exchange of products, both material and intellectual, across Eurasia from China to the Mediterranean, traditionally from the 2nd century B.C.E. through the first twelve centuries of the Common Era. People who know something of the Silk Road think first of the transport of silk to Rome or the expansion of Buddhism from India to China, although certainly it is much more. But why silk, and why a road to describe this exchange? Silk provides the example of a mysterious luxury product for which people throughout the region were willing to pay high prices and even jeopardize lives. And the "road" refers to the exchange of those material products that traveled by land, although this literal meaning must be extended to include cultural and spiritual exchanges that would be part of a metaphorical Silk Road. Beyond these definitions the idea of the Silk Road is still available for new interpretations. And in the political environment prevailing in 2002, the idea was particularly evocative.

Visitors to the Festival were greeted by five "sentinels of arrival," landmarks along the ancient Silk Road: St. Mark's Square in Venice, Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) mosque/church/museum in Istanbul, Registan Square in Samarkand, the Xi'an bell tower, and the great gate to Todaiji Temple in Nara. Each housed a stage that reflected a different performance tradition. The performing arts selected for the Festival were grouped into spiritual activities, courtly entertainment, local celebrations and entertainments, nomadic presentations, and new musics that draw from tradition. Spiritual music, for example, provided the program an opportunity to present the stories of the expansion of religion - Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity - along the Silk Road. Buddhist monks from Tibet and Sufi Muslim devotees from Turkey and Bangladesh highlighted the central role that religion played in Silk Road trade.

Existing examples of ancient silk, pottery, carpets, and glass all tell very specific stories of travel and exchange and remind us of the extent to which people across the region have been connected throughout history. What may be surprising to some, however, is how many such objects are still made today. The curatorial staff chose to feature ceramics, silk and cotton textiles, carpets, paper, and stone and metal products, including glass. Each was in a different compound - the Paper Garden, the Ceramics Courtyard, the Silk Grove, the Family Oasis, and the Jewel Garden - and told a story from a different period along the Silk Road, including, in some cases, a chapter from life in the United States. Paper, for example, was invented in China and remained a secret of the region for centuries; along with written language, writing materials were thought to possess magical qualities. Religious texts as well as commercial bills were written out and transported along a route that, through such communication, could more easily function. Each region added its own distinctive features of paper art including Turkish marbling and Italian watermarks. Similar elaborations have been made in the art of calligraphy, which, particularly in Islamic and Chinese cultures, has become highly refined and stylistically differentiated as to school and usage. Representatives of these schools still train new generations of artists along the Silk Road and in the United States.

The movement of religious traditions around the world has arguably been one of the most important forces throughout world history. Both Islam and Buddhism were introduced to millions of new adherents along the Silk Road, and these conversions continue to alter the face of our world. These religions, along with all of the above exchange goods, have also altered the face of the United States. Many Americans drink tea in fine china, buy "Oriental" carpets, and certainly wear garments of cotton, wool, and silk. They are likely familiar with Asian martial arts and may attend an Islamic mosque. The Silk Road has extended to the United States and, since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, understanding that connection clearly has become more important. The 2002 Festival offered its million visitors the opportunity to learn more about the roots of this vital connection and to celebrate the long-standing relationships that have existed between East and West and North and South. The Festival provided a rare opportunity to connect with other cultures as well as with one's own and in doing so, in a small way, to build trust between and within cultures of the global Silk Road.

Scope and Contents:
One journal-style volume, quarter-bound black pebble-grained cloth with brown marbled paper boards. Approximately 200 pages, mostly filled with handwritten notes. Paper onlay on the front cover bears the handwritten inscription "Notes taken before Mr. Freer's collection in Detroit -- some amount is [?] -- mostly [?] lantern slides." Inside front cover has the bookplate of Ernest K. Fenollosa; the bookplate also bears the ink signature "Mary McNeil Fenollosa (Sidney McCall)" and the ink stamp of the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. Loosely inserted at the beginning of the journal is an undated receipt for the purchase of several items from the Walpole Galleries in New York City.
The first part of the journal, dated November 1907, contains approximately 104 pages of notes, presumably written in Fenollosa's hand. On the back cover, another paper slip bears the inscription "This end of the note book to be used for a list of Illustrations from Stokes' prints to be sent Mr. Heinemann -- begun March 16th 1911." From this point, a new set of notes begins, written after Fenollosa's death and consisting of approximately 34 pages.

Biographical / Historical:
Ernest Francisco Fenollosa (1853-1908) was a poet and student of Asian art. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Fenollosa studied at Harvard, Cambridge University and the art school at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts before traveling to Japan to teach political economy and philosophy at the Imperial University at Tokyo. In 1988, he helped establish the Tokyo Fine Arts Academy and the Imperial Museum, serving as its director. For his many efforts to preserve temples and shrines and their art work, the Emperor of Japan decorated him with the orders of the Rising Sun and the Sacred Mirror. In 1890 Fenollosa returned to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to take the position of curator of the department of Oriental arts. However, his public divorce and immediate remarriage in 1895 to the writer Mary McNeill Scott (1865-1954) led to his dismissal from the Museum in 1896 and he returned to Japan to teach English literature at the Tokyo Higher Normal School. He returned to the United States in 1900 to write and lecture on Asia. His works include East and West: The Discovery of America and Other Poems (1893); Epochs of Chinese and Japanese Art (2d ed. 1912), compiled by his widow, Mary McNeil Fenollosa; and two works on Japanese drama (ed. by Ezra Pound, 1916).

Summary:
The Smithsonian Institution Festival of American Folklife, held annually since 1967 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was renamed the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 1998. The materials collected here document the planning, production, and execution of the annual Festival, produced by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (1999-present) and its predecessor offices (1967-1999). Scope and Contents note:
This collection documents the planning, production, and execution of the 1991 Festival of American Folklife. Materials may include photographs, audio recordings, motion picture film and video recordings, notes, production drawings, contracts, memoranda, correspondence, informational materials, publications, and ephemera. Such materials were created during the Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as well as in the featured communities, before or after the Festival itself.

Introduction:
The 1991 Festival programs were largely about human relationships to land. Indonesian land punctuates sea and ocean to form some 13,000 volcanic islands. On these islands is an amazing diversity of environments, ranging from the sandy beaches of Sumatra to snowcapped mountains that rise above the rainforests in Irian Jaya on New Guinea. To sample this diversity, the Festival presented cultural traditions from three particular environments - the forests of Kalimantan, the fields of Java, and the sea coast of Sulawesi. Half a world away from Indonesia and much closer to home is the American "heartland." American culture embodies a few elemental self-images with mythic stature - the frontier is surely one; the family farm is surely another. The idea of the family farm also entails some of our strongest values - hard work, self-reliance, family solidarity, and community life, all on view to Festival visitors.

For millennia before Columbus's arrival in the New World, native peoples gathered and cultivated its bounty, bred new crops, derived medicines to cure sickness, mined ores for making tools and ornaments, used its earth, stone and wood for building homes, made dyes for cloth, and invented ways of preparing and cooking food. Land and its use informed social, moral, religious, and cosmological beliefs, and sacred and secular practices. Some of this knowledge and practice of land use and its symbolic elaboration in artistic forms are continued among many Native American groups. At the Festival, culture bearers from the Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian people from Alaska; Hopi from Arizona; Maya and Lacandón from Chiapas, Mexico; Zapotec and Ikood from Oaxaca, Mexico; Shuar and Achuar from Ecuador; Jalq'a and Tiwanaku from Bolivia; and Taquile from Peru illustrated how the land in many varied environments is cared for and thought about, and how, almost five hundred years after Columbus, the wise and humane use, the knowledge and power of land must be re-"discovered."

The 1991 Festival, which also featured a program on the roots of rhythm and blues, took place for two four-day weeks (June 28-July 1 and July 4-7) between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive and between 10th Street and 14th Street, south of the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of Natural History (see site plan).

The 1991 Program Book included schedules and participant lists for each program; keynote essays on each of the four programs were supplemented by shorter pieces focusing on particular topics.

The Festival was co-presented by the Smithsonian Institution and National Park Service and organized by the Office of Folklife Programs.

Scope and Contents:
These letters are clues to a secret life. This is a series of letters and addressed envelopes sent to Philip St. George (?-1997) of New York City who, from all indications, identified as being a closeted gay man. George's correspondents, who may have also have been gay or bisexual, tell of their experiences in the armed forces after World War II and their life after the war, 1945-1953.

Expedition Leaders, Bankes to Smith

Scope and Contents:
Series 3 includes 51 pages of engravings that were created primarily to document expeditions. Illustrators and explorers represented include Thomas Bankes ("Bankes's New System of Geography"), John Barbot, Olfert Dapper, DeBry, Edward Cavendish Drake, [Des]marchais, Charles Theodore Middleton ("Middleton's Complete System of Geography"), George Henry Millar ("Millar's New Complete System of Geography"), Francis Moore, and Smith. All of the engravings are undated, with the exception of Smith's, which were published on September 22, 1904.

Locations depicted include Angola, Benin, Cairo, Ethiopia, the Kingdom of Congo, the Gold Coast, Guinea, the Kingdom of Loango, Sierra Leone, and Senegal. Peoples and subjects portrayed include Don Daniel de Silva (Count of Sogno), the Jagas people, the King of Congo, the Khoikhoi, amuletes, musical instruments, weapons, clothing, animals, caravans, sepulchral monuments (Kings of Guinea), transportation, and rituals, among others.
