Scope and Contents note:
Writings by Kihn include his travel diary, memoir, and typescripts, manuscripts and drafts of published and unpublished articles on amateur painters, his travels documenting various North American tribal cultures and his sojourn painting in Spain. This subseries also includes Kihn's notebooks and loose field notes from his travels, and notes on the National Geographic Indians of America series.

Scope and Contents note:
Personal and work-related correspondence is between Kihn and immediate family, close friends, and colleagues who shared his interest in American Indian culture. Kihn's outgoing correspondence is well-represented through handwritten drafts and carbon copies. Although the bulk of the incoming correspondence is addressed to Kihn, letters from mutual friends addressed to his wife Helen are scattered thoughout both the personal and chronological correspondence.

General and Personal Correspondence

Scope and Contents note:
This subseries consists primarily of personal correspondence, including holiday cards and invitations, although letters related to commissions and exhibitions are scattered throughout.

This subseries includes the letters of W. Langdon Kihn, Alfred and Carrie Kihn (his parents), and Helen Kihn (his wife). Langdon Kihn's correspondence contains letters to his parents from his early trips out west, and drafts and fragments of letters to colleagues promoting his early exhibitions. There is also a selection of Christmas cards of his own design, which he sent to friends and family.

Notable correspondents, most of whom are also represented in the chronological correspondence, include the Canadian ethnographer, Marius Barbeau; well-known collectors, Dale and Maud Chester and Sir Henry Wellcome; artists Maynard Dixon and Guy Wiggins; French biophysicist and philosopher Pierre du Noüy; and military historian Captian Russell V. Steele, whose letters frequently include illustrations of soldiers in military uniforms.

Folders are arranged in alphabetical order by correspondent name. Letters and letter fragments with missing or illegible signatures have been filed in a folder titled "Unidentified," which is located at the end of this subseries.

Items in this series document Kihn's life and work though exhibition announcements, catalogs, invitations, annual reports, course lists, book covers, publication announcements, brochures, travel related materials, ephemera, newspaper clippings, and magazines that contain articles about Kihn or examples of his work. There are also extensive examples of Kihn's work as an illustrator including proofs of his illustrations for the books Beaver, Kings, and Cabins (1933) by Constance Lindsay Skinner and Dawn Boy of the Pueblos (1935) by Laura Becker Scott, among others. Additionally there are proofs of plates, engraved after Kihn's original paintings and drawings, for the National Geographic magazines ongoing series on North American Indian life and history.

Items in this series include illustrated field notes, ink studies for book and magazine illustrations, studies for federal art projects such as paintings for the Nathan Hale Library in Connecticut, three sketchbooks and loose sketches from Kihn's travels observing North American Indian tribal culture and a study and finished sign for the "Langdon Kihn Art Classes." There is also a folder of work by other artists.
