Expulsion of ethnic Germans from Czechoslovakia at the behest of that country's government in exile was agreed upon at the Potsdam Conference in 1945. It was reaffirmed and further delineated by subsequent decrees of the Czechoslovak government. Roughly 1.6 million ethnic Germans were deported to the American zone of occupation, which is where Schwabisch Gmund was located.

This image shows the Brandenburg Gate in the right center distance, while the Reichstag building would be to the far left, although it is not actually visible. The smokestack, however, was adjacent to the Reichstag, as seen in aerial photographs taken at the time. The long lines of people visible on both sides of the street suggest some sort of registration process, perhaps for relief, given the presence of a Red Cross vehicle. YMN071 shows the ruins of the Reichstag building, taken from the same location and probably at the same time.
