Summary:

Nathan Blumberg (1897--1982) served with the US Army Air Service, 27th Aero Squadron, during World War I. This collection consists of a scrapbook compiled by Blumberg which mainly documents the activities of his unit during the war.

Scope and Contents:

This collection consists of a scrapbook compiled by Nathan Blumberg which mainly documents the activities of the 27th Aero Squadron during World War I. Photographs in the scrapbook include images of members of the squadron; graves of some of the pilots killed in action; aircraft including the SPAD XIII (S.13), Dorand Type A.R.2 A2, Nieuport 28 C18, and the de Havilland (Airco) D.H.4; and views of various locations in France. The images are captioned by Blumberg. The scrapbook also includes some military records, poems, news clippings, and photographs and memorabilia from the squadron's reunions in 1966 and 1973. A number of news clippings in the scrapbook relate to Frank Luke, Jr., a pilot from the 27th Aero Squadron who was killed in action during World War I and was awarded the Medal of Honor. The scrapbook also contains some clippings about Edward Vernon "Eddie" Rickenbacker and some of Blumberg's enlistment records from World War II.

Arrangement:

The scrapbook in this collection is in original order. The collection also contains some loose items which are housed separately.

Biographical / Historical:

Nathan Blumberg (1897--1982) enlisted in the US Army Air Service at Fort Slocum, New York on November 27, 1917 and was initially attached to the 233rd Aero Squadron before being transferred to the 659th Aero Squadron in December 1917. In February 1918, Blumberg was attached to the 27th Aero Squadron and remained with that unit, serving in France from February 1918 until March 1919 when he was honorably discharged at the rank of corporal. Blumberg re-enlisted in the US Army Air Forces in October 1942 and served during World War II as a warrant officer.

Summary:

Lieutenant Frank Stuart Patterson (1896--1918) served with the US Army Air Service's Officers' Reserve Corps. Patterson was killed in a crash at Wilbur Wright Field while testing a machine gun synchronization method in a de Havilland (Airco) D.H.4. In 1931, the Fairfield Air Depot was renamed Patterson Field in his honor. This field was later subsumed into Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This collection consists of Patterson's pilot's license, two passes to Dayton Wright Airplane Co. facilities, and his Aero Club of America membership card.

Biographical / Historical:

Lieutenant Frank Stuart Patterson (1896--1918) joined the aviation section of the Enlisted Reserve Corps on May 21, 1917. After ground school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and flight training in Buffalo, New York, Patterson was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Officers' Reserve Corps at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was later transferred to Wilbur Wright Field and began work in testing aircraft. Lt. Patterson was tragically killed there in 1918 while testing a machine gun synchronization method in a de Havilland (Airco) D.H.4. In 1931, the Fairfield Air Depot was renamed Patterson Field in his honor. This field was later subsumed into Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

This collection consists of 62 photographs taken by William H. Sheahan of early aircraft and aviators, mostly at Hempstead Plains Field where he took lessons. Aircraft represented in the collection include a Bellanca monoplane; Blériot XI; various Curtiss aircraft models including biplane and pusher types; Curtiss JN-4 Jenny and Curtiss JN-4Can Canuck; LWF Twin DH-4; a Deperdussin monoplane; a Gallaudet (Aircraft) Military Tractor Biplane; various models produced by Heinrich (Aeroplane Co); Moisant (Co) 1914 Bluebird Monoplane; and Wright (Co) Model B.

Arrangement:

This collection is in original order. Images in this collection have been catalogued previously and were assigned the following image numbers: SI-94-12971 to SI-94-13026 and SI-94-13758 to SI-94-13764.

Biographical / Historical:

William H. Sheahan (1872-1956) first became interested in aviation in 1910 and he spent part of the 1912 and 1913 summers at the Heinrich Aviation School, Hempstead Plains Field (now Roosevelt Field), Long Island. Sheahan soloed in a Heinrich monoplane and later took flying lessons at Curtiss Field, Long Island, during 1920-1922. Sheahan was a member of the Aero Club of Pennsylvania, and was in charge of the Hall of Aviation at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Sheahan also applied for membership in the Early Birds.

Biographical / Historical:

Manuel Santana Picheco was soldier stationed at Mitchel Field, Long Island after the First World War. During this time, he also worked in the local photography labs of Court Commercial Photography, a now-defunct entity. Many of the images in this collection are duplicates of Court Commercial photographs.

This collection consists of a small pocket diary full of Edward Joseph Gamm's handwritten notes on various aspects of aircraft maintenance and a photo album assembled by Gamm containing photographs from his time in France. The photographs include images of 97th Aero Squadron personnel and facilities; aerial views of France; armament; aerial views of bombs being dropped; and aircraft including the Breguet Bre.14, de Havilland (Airco) D.H.4, and Nieuport 28 C1. The collection also contains a brief biographical sketch of Gamm compiled by the donor.

This collection consists of twelve photographs (two are two prints of the same image) collected by Seth Cook of the Army Air Corps between 1918-1923. The following aircraft are featured: de Havilland (Airco) D.H.4; Curtiss R-6 Army Racer; and Curtiss JN-4 Jenny. The following aviation personalities are included: James H. This donation consists of Heveran's scrapbook which contains photographs and ephemera. The photographs include images of the following aircraft and aviation scenes: Curtiss H Flying Boat; SPAD XVI and XIII; de Havilland D.H.4; Salmson; Fokker D.VIII; Halberstadt C.II; Royal Aircraft Factory (RAF) S.E.5; power winch for raising a balloon; and images of the 14th Balloon Photo Section members. There are also images of armament, tanks (including a decoy German tank), German artillery and mortar, images of dead German soldiers, and images of the destruction of the French countryside. The scrapbook also includes a map, French and Belgian currency, a Christmas menu, and newspaper articles.

Biographical / Historical:

Glenn Edward Heveran, Sr. (1895-1960) was born in Chicago, Illinois. As a young man he was a commercial photographer and participated in the infant motion picture industry in Chicago. Heveran was inducted into the United States Army in March of 1918. He became a corporal in the 14th Balloon Photo Section, First Army, and was sent to France in August of 1918. When he returned home in 1919, he prepared a scrapbook, containing photographs that he took or collected during his time in France

This collection consists of 77 copy prints of Luftwaffe and American World War II aircraft, including: Dornier Do 17; Heinkel He 111; Focke-Wulf FW 200; Junkers Ju 88; Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress; Martin B-26 Marauder; Northrop P-61A Black Widow; Douglas A-20 Havoc; and Consolidated B-24 Liberator. There are also a large number of nose art images. The Boeing B-17 aircraft pictured are Eighth Air Force; some Ninth Air Force aircraft are also included.

An additional seven copy prints were added in the Fall of 1997: five of the images were of the Travel Air 2000, and two of the images were of the de Havilland (Airco) D.H.4. The donor also donated several copies of color advertisements for the Northrop P-61.

Scope and Contents:

This collection consists of 45 photographs relating to Nichols and the 163rd Aero Squadron. The images include: aerial views of air fields; 2nd Day Bombardment Group photographs and group photographs of the 163rd and the 100th Aero squadrons; wrecked aircraft; air-to-air photographs of aircraft and dirigibles; and ground shots of aircraft, mostly De Havilland DH-4s, and air fields. There is also a photo of the 2nd Day Bombardment Group Insignia.

Biographical / Historical:

Lt. Earle Nichols was part of the 163rd Aero Squadron, which was a De Havilland DH-4 squadron for the 2nd Day Bombardment Group. This Group was organized on 1 November 1918 and was Major George E. Reinburg's first Air Service command at the Front. The group was ready for operations by 9 November but bad weather prevented them from flying any bombing missions before the Armistice.

Scope and Contents:

This collection consists of twenty-two prints of the 354th Aero Squadron, and copies of Innes' pilot log and documentation concerning his service. The collection also contains a copy of the booklet "History of the 354th Aero Squadron (Observation) A.E.F." The prints include the following aircraft: de Havilland DH-4; L.F.G. Roland D.VIA; Handley-Page O-400; Sopwith 1A2; Dorand A.R; Nieuport Scout; and Salmson.

Biographical / Historical:

The 354th Aero Squadron (Observation) was organized at Kelly Field, Texas, on January 28, 1918. The squadron was shipped to France on August 16th, and was eventually stationed at Autreville and Saizerais Airdromes, providing reconnaissance services. William Wallace Innes was a pilot for the 354th Aero Squadron (Observation) during World War I.

This collection includes his pilot's log book, old passports, newspaper articles, Early Bird decals, correspondence, and original photographs and postcards. The photographs/postcards include shots of the following aircraft: Stearman (1927) C-3MB mailplane; de Havilland DHC-4 Caribou; Curtiss JN-4Can; Curtiss Condor; Sikorsky S-38BH Amphibian; Deperdussin (UK) 1913 Racer; Republic F-84F Thunderstreak; Alexander Eaglerock A-4, A-12, A-15; Ford Tri-Motor; Bristol Scout; Blériot XI. There are also photos of Ely's flight from the USS Pennsylvania; Katherine and Marjorie Stinson; the graduating class at Berkley, CA; an Eastern Air Transport Building; a Mexican Pan American Airlines hangar; the tombstone of Lt. Reginald E. P. Pryce-Jones; 50 HP Kirkham engine; 3" Koellein-Mieding gun; and "Eaglerock" radiator.

Biographical / Historical:

George Martin Keightley (1889-1967) was a member of the Early Birds of Aviation, Inc. He helped develop the Royal Canadian Air Service in World War I, and when the United States entered the war he returned to the US become an instructor for the Army Signal Corps. In World War II he served on the Civil Aeronautics Board as an air safety investigator.

Scope and Contents:

This collection was donated by the son of Jack Scaturro who worked at Roosevelt Field during the 1920s and 1930s. Mr. Scaturro took snapshots of the facility's workers, friends and transient pilots, most notably the flamboyant Roscoe Turner and his aircraft the Gilmore Lion. The collection consists of 17 photos of the following aircraft: Aeronca C-1; Burnelli GX-3; Corsair O2U-1; DH-4; Fleet PT-6; Sikorsky C-6; Lockheed: Lindbergh's Sirius, Turner's NC 7954 and Lockheed Model 3 Air Express 'Gilmore Lion;' and a Loening COA-1. There are two photos of the Goodyear airship 'Vigilant' and one photo of the airship 'Los Angeles.' There is also a small scrapbook of newspaper clippings of aircraft disasters near Roosevelt Field and Westbury, Long Island.

The donor's father, Otto Thielhart, worked at L.W.F. Engineering Company during the early 1920s, and these 81 prints were copied from the father's scrapbook. The subjects include scenes from L.W.F. Engineering Co. and aircraft built there or of the period, including: Aeromarine M-1; Albatros D V; Arens Biplane; Bleriot XI Type; Curtiss CR-1, CR-2, CR-3, HA, HS-1L, JN-4, L, NC-1, NC-2, NC-3, NC-4, Navy Racer, and R-6 Army Racer; De Havilland DH-4B; Douglas DT-2; shots of the L.W.F. Factory, LWF Model V, Model V-1, Model F, Model G-2, Model H, Model L; Martin NBS-1; Sloan/Standard H-3; and Thomas-Morse S.4C.

Biographical / Historical:

The Lowe Willard & Fowler (L.W.F.) Engineering Company, located at College Point, New York City, was organized in 1915 for the manufacture of all types of heavier-than-air machines. L.W.F. produced the first all-American aircraft to be used during World War I. In 1917, the first Liberty motor to fly was installed in the L.W.F. Model G, and several of the L.W.F. aircraft held performance records for speed and endurance. The company also completed Government contracts for producing Martin Bombers, Douglas DT-2s, and Naval Observation Planes, before the company dissolved in 1924.

This collection includes 49 black and white prints and 19 color snapshots. The color prints are of the Piasecki H-21 and the Boeing-Vertol CH-113 Voyageur. These photographs were taken of the aircraft in 1958 at the Philadelphia Airport before their respective test flights. The black and white photography relate to Arendt and his air mail service. The images include photographs of air mail personalities, including Walter H. Biographical / Historical:

Arthur C. Arendt was a pilot for the U.S. Air Mail Service from August 5, 1920 until April 9, 1921. He was a colleague to Walter H. Stevens, another air mail pilot, who was one of the thirty-four air mail pilots to die in the line of duty when his aircraft caught fire in the air above Pemberville, Ohio, on September 14, 1920. Arendt was later a member of the Air Mail Pioneers organization
