The papers of painter Francis M. Celentano measure 3.5 linear feet and date from circa 1950-2016. Included are biographical information consisting of a birth certificate, death certificate, first communion, certificate of merit and high school diploma; writings including a diary, September 22, 1958 to January 19, 1962, and unpublished writings and notes on painting and sculpture including a copy of his Master's Thesis, "Origins and Development of Abstract Expressionism in the United States" (New York University, 1957); correspondence with H.W. Janson, his thesis advisor, and others; printed material consisting of reviews, flyers, and announcements, 1960-2016; photographs of Celentano, 1953-2016, and photographs and transparencies of works of art; three VHS videos of lectures or about Celentano; and miscellany.
Biographical / Historical:
Painter Francis M. Celentano (1928-2016) was one of the original New York Op artists. Celentano moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1966 and taught at the University of Washington from 1966 until he retired in 1997.
Provenance:
The collection was donated in 2020 by Rebecca Celentano, Francis Celentano's widow.

Use of original papers requires an appointment and is limited to the Archives' Washington, D.C., Research Center. Use of audio visual recordings with no duplicate copy requires advance notice.
