Two airman certificates with associated rating records for pilot's license no. 2648 issued to Grover Loening by United States Department of Commerce, Civil Aeronautics Administration. Both certified Loening as a private pilot for airplanes, single-engine lands. The first certificate, stamped as duplicate, included two documents issued on 12 December 1946. The second certificate is dated 19 April 1948.

Mechanic's Identification and Licenses

Scope and Contents:
License folder containing a Mechanic's Identification Card and five Mechanic's License Cards issued by the United States Department of Commerce, Aeronautics Branch, to Paul R. Gruhler as a licensed Engine Mechanic. The Identification Card issued on 16 October 1927 contains a photograph of Gruhler. All the license cards expired on the 15th of October in years: 1929, 1931, 1933, 1935, and 1937.

Transport Pilot's License and Card

Scope and Contents:
Three items associated to Transport Pilot's License no. 3200 issued to Benjamin S. Kelsey by the United States Department of Commerce. The Transport Pilot certificate card expired 15 September 1929. The Transport Pilot's Rating Authority was signed and dated 15 April 1930. The Transport Pilot's License, issued 28 Mach 1930, includes renewals between 1931 and 1935. A photograph of Kelsey is also attached to the license. All items are particularly fragile, existing in fragments.

Summary:
This collection consists of a scrapbook relating to Manila Davis Talley and her aviation career.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of one scrapbook which contains newspaper clippings, membership cards, programs, photographs, and pilot's licenses, mostly relating to Manila Davis Talley and her aviation career. The focus of the collection is on the years 1929-42, and highlights Talley's career as a salesperson for Curtis-Wright, and her association with the 99s and the Betsy Ross Corps. Also included is the scrapbook is information on the Women's National Air Races, the Women's National Air Meets, and Talley's work with the Civil Air Patrol. The scrapbook also includes clippings and other items related to Amelia Earhart, Jimmy Doolittle and General Balbo.

Single item in original order.
Biographical / Historical:
Manila Davis Talley (1898-1973) soloed in October 1929 and received her pilot's license in April of 1930. She joined Curtis-Wright Corporation as a saleswoman in late 1929 or early 1930. Talley joined the 99s (international association of female pilots) in 1930 and was a founding member of Betsy Ross Corps, a private 1930s female auxiliary/reserve for the Army Air Corps. Talley was the third woman to go through Air Force War College, in December 1966.

Gloves must be worn when handling unprotected photographs and negatives. Special arrangements required to view negatives due to cold storage. Using negatives requires a three hour waiting period. Contact the Archives Center at 202-633-3270.
Series Rights:
When the Museum purchased the collection from the Estate of Robert S. Scurlock, it obtained all rights, including copyright. The earliest photographs in the collection are in the public domain because their term of copyright has expired. The Archives Center will control copyright and the use of the collection for reproduction purposes, which will be handled in accordance with its standard reproduction policy guidelines. Archives Center cost-recovery and use fees may apply when requesting reproductions.
