Descriptive Entry:
This collection contains only a fragment of Henry Baldwin Ward's papers and consists mostly of photographs. A small amount of correspondence is also included.
Historical Note:
Henry Baldwin Ward (1865-1945) was born in Troy, New York. He received degrees from Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts (A.B., 1885), and Harvard University, (A.M., Ph.D., 1892). From 1888 to 1890, Ward participated in postgraduate study in Europe at the universities of Gottingen, Freiburg, and Leipzig, and the biological stations at Naples, Heligoland, and Villefranche-sur-Mer. His first teaching job was at Troy High School, where he served as Instructor of Science from 1886 to 1888. In 1892, Ward accepted the position of Instructor of Morphology at the University of Michigan. He was appointed Associate Professor of Zoology at the University of Nebraska in 1893, and was promoted to Professor in 1899 and Dean of the College of Medicine in 1902. Ward was named Professor of Zoology at the University of Illinois in 1909. In 1933, his title was changed to Emeritus Professor, and he remained at Illinois until his death.
