A. Harvey Schreter (1916-2008) was a world traveler and collector of pre-Columbian, African, and Pacific art. The collection contains materials related to trips taken by Harvey and his wife Phyllis between 1960 and 2000, slide lectures based on these trips,and personal and professional papers.

Scope and Contents:

The A. Harvey Schreter papers consist of correspondence, lecture notes, promotional materials, clippings, photographs (color 35mm slides and prints), scrapbooks, and audio and video recordings documenting his world travels, lecture series, and personal and professional life. The bulk of the collection contains material related to trips taken by Harvey and his wife Phyllis to North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania between 1960 and 2000. These trips becasme the basis for lectures delivered by the Schreters monthly from the 1980s through the early 2000s. Also included are personal and biographical papers of Harvey Schreter, his wife Phyllis, their children and extended family; materials related to Harvey's membership in the Explorers Club; materials related to the Schreter Neckwear Company; and materials related to the "Schreter System," an exercise program for the pelvic floor muscles.

Please note that the contents of the collection and the language and terminology used reflect the context and culture of the time of its creation. As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today. Biographical Note:

A. Harvey Schreter (1916-2008) was the President of Schreter Neckware, a necktie manufacturer, as well as a world traveler and collector of pre-Columbian, African and Pacific art. Schreter became a member of the Explorers Club in 1982, frequently lecturing to the Washington Chapter about his travels with his wife, Phyllis Schreter.

Scope and Contents:

This series contains materials related to trips taken by Harvey and Phyllis Schreter between 1960 and 2000. The Schreters visited locations in North and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Many of these trips became the basis for lectures delivered by the Schreters for the Explorers Club, colleges and universities, and other institutions. The series contains 35mm color slides used in the lectures, lecture notes, audio and video recordings of lectures, additional slides not arranged into lecture slide shows, and other related material.

The slides depict landscapes, village and city life, tourist sites, and museums.

Arrangement:

The series has been arranged into subseries by trip. The trips are arranged chronologically.

Summary:

Five letters of Adrien-Francois Servais, a nineteenth century cellist, pioneer in the use of the endpin in performance, and owner of the "Servais" Stradivarius cello.

Scope and Contents:

Five letters of Adrien-Francois Servais, describing his personal experiences as he traveled and gave concerts, including three from his son Joseph Servais (1850-1885), dated September 7, 1871, June 7, 1877, and December 30, 1884. Also includes a photograph of Adrien-Francois Servais with cello with an endpin and a lithograph of Francois Servais, signed and dedicated to Joseph Fishoff.

Biographical / Historical:

Adrien-Francois Servais was among the first of the nineteenth century virtuosi whose exploration of the capabilities of the cello stimulated composers to consider that instrument's capabilities. Renowned for his acrobatic technique, which dazzled audiences throughout Europe, and his expressive style and powerful tone, Servais was once described as "the Paganini of the cello."

Biographical / Historical:

Dr. Tomlinson D. Todd (19?-1987), civic community and civil rights activist, radio announcer, and educator worked in Washington D.C. Working primarily in the early '40's with the Institute of Race Relation and "Americans All" radio program.

Born in Reading Pennsylvania, the son of Rev. William W. Todd and Mary Todd. Todd attended Armstrong High School in Washington D.C. In 1936 he graduated from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania with an A.B. degree. Todd was employed by the Federal and District Governments, and later in his life taught high school in Washington, D.C. Todd received two honorary doctorates in law and literature. He was honored by the National Association of Colored Women and Time Magazine. Additionally he was placed twice on the Afro-American and the Pittsburgh courier newspaper yearly honor rolls for outstanding contributions in the cause of true democracy and harmonies race relations. Todd was feted at three testimonial dinners and travelled to Europe and Africa as the guest of the Government of Nigeria.

Tomlinson D. Todd is credited with the discovery, unearthing and publicizing of the "lost laws" of 1872 and 1873, which prohibited restaurants from denying service because of race, and under which were filed charges that led to early restaurant desegregation in the 1950's. Tomlinson D. Todd was involved in numerous political, education, civic, and community endeavors. He was president of the Institute on Race Relations, president and founder of Club Internationale, Inc., member of the Capital Press Club, the National Press Club, The Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C., and the Washington Urban League, a civic leader and exponent of true democracy for all Americans, officer of the Pleasant Plains Civic Association, and served as Associate Editor of the Progressive Consumer magazine. Dr. Todd met six United States presidents: John F. Kennedy, with whom he guested at the White House; Lyndon Baines Johnson; Richard Milhous Nixon; Ronald Reagan; Gerald Ford; and Harry S. Truman, who was a member of the Club Internationale. Dr. Todd's work also brought him in contact with other public figures, including Gene Kelly, Henry Fonda, Walter Pigeon, Orson Welles, Humphrey Bogart, Judy Holliday, Lillian and Dorothy Gish, Lauren Bacall, Lena Home, Bob Hope, Harry Belafonte, and Charles Laughton.

Dr. Tomlinson D. Todd died on March 2, 1987 at the age of 76 in Washington, D.C.

Biographical / Historical:

Painter Agnes Pelton (1881-1961) lived and worked in Long Island, New York, and Cathedral City, California, and is known for her desert landscapes, portraits, and abstract paintings.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany to William and Florence Pelton, Pelton and her mother relocated to New York after her father's death in 1890. Her mother, who had studied music at the Stuttgart Conservatory, opened the Pelton School of Music in Brooklyn, which remained in operation for 30 years. Pelton began her art studies at the Pratt Institute in 1895 and continued working with one of her instructors, Arthur Dow, at his summer school in Ipswich, Massachusetts, after her graduation in 1900. She later worked with William Langson Lathrop and Hamilton Field, and traveled abroad to attend the British Academy in Rome in 1910 and 1911.

In 1912, after seeing her work in an exhibition in Hamilton Field's studio in Ogunquit, Maine, Walt Kuhn invited Pelton to participate in the 1913 Armory Show. During her early career, Pelton created works that were primarily influenced by Davies's philosophy on the effect of natural light, and which she termed "Imaginative Paintings." After a visit to New Mexico in 1919, Pelton began shifting to another style of painting, focusing on Southwestern landscapes and figurative portraits, which she continued from her studios in New York City and Long Island. In 1932, Pelton moved to Cathedral City, California and began painting abstract works in a new stylistic phase, which were visual explorations of her growing interest in spirituality and philosophy. In 1938, she became a founding member of the Transcendental Painting Group, which included Raymond Jonson and Emil Bisttram. Pelton died in Cathedral City in 1961.

Provenance:

The Agnes Pelton papers were assembled by Cornelia and Irving Sussman for a biography of Agnes Pelton. They were donated to the Archives by gallery director Jan Rindfleisch on behalf of the Sussmans, in 1984. In 1997, circa 162 letters from Agnes Pelton to Jane Levington Comfort, that are now part of this collection, were bequeathed to Cornelia and Irving Sussman by Jane Levington Comfort through Joan Crisci, the executor of Comfort's estate, and donated to the Archives. An additional studio guestbook was donated in 2021 by Kay Hillery, whose in-laws were neighbors and friends with Agnes Pelton. Both the letters from Agnes Pelton to Jane Levington Comfort and the studio guestbook donations were facilitated by Michael Kelley.

The Smithsonian Institution Festival of American Folklife, held annually since 1967 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was renamed the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 1998. The materials collected here document the planning, production, and execution of the annual Festival, produced by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (1999-present) and its predecessor offices (1967-1999). This collection documents the planning, production, and execution of the 1988 Festival of American Folklife. Introduction:

The 1988 Festival celebrated the centennial of the American Folklore Society, founded one hundred years earlier because of the need to document and study cultures that were seen as disappearing. Much of the Society's attention today, however, is engaged in the documentation and interpretation of emerging traditions and cultural expressions. Folklorists work in inner cities, conduct research on occupational groups, analyze processes of traditionalization and cooperate with other professionals in devising natural conservation and historical preservation strategies, which also promote cultural continuity, equity and integrity. Visitors to the 1988 Festival could learn about what it is that folklorists do and what impacts they have on the communities with which they work.

The other living exhibitions that made up this year's Festival also provided ample illustrations of this same view of the traditional. The Massachusetts program told a paradigmatic American story. Gay Head Wampanoag, Yankee settlers, Afro American migrants, and immigrants from Italy, Greece, Poland, the Cape Verde Islands, Puerto Rico, and Southeast Asia have not only preserved their traditions; through ingenious acts of individual and community creativity they have adapted them and endowed them with new meanings, as circumstances have changed. The Metropolitan Washington program pointed to the heightened consciousness of cultural issues associated with the migration experience. The program asked how immigrants from El Salvador, Ethiopia, China, Trinidad and Tobago, as well as domestic Anglo and Afro American groups historically migrating from nearby states, discard, reinvent, and reconstitute their traditions as they actively make a new place home. A varied contingent of musicians and performers from several republics of the Soviet Union demonstrated how truly ancient traditions nurtured in various pastoral, tribal, and religious environments have not merely survived but actually flourished in contemporary Soviet life. Also at the Festival were American musicians who, as part of a groundbreaking cultural exchange with the Soviet Union, would later travel to Moscow to participate in the International Folklore Festival in August 1988 and be reunited with the Soviet musicians participating in the Smithsonian's Festival.

The 1988 Festival took place for two five-day weeks (June 23-27 and June 30-July 4) between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive and between 10th Street and 14th Street, south of the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of Natural History (see site plan).

The 1988 Program Book included schedules and participant lists for each program; the Program Book essays provided a larger context for the Festival presentations, extending beyond the traditions actually presented at the 1988 Festival.

The Festival was co-presented by the Smithsonian Institution and National Park Service and organized by the Office of Folklife Programs.
