Scope and Contents:
Series 1 is comprised of one album containing 78 silver gelatin prints. Many of the photographs depict Pères Blancs (White Fathers) missionaries, particularly Roger and Paul Van Hende, Africans enlisted in the European military, and Chief Musinga and his family. Peoples depicted include Rwandan and Swahili peoples. There are also a few photographs of Lake Tanganyika, Sultan Kisabuka, and Royal Commissioner Marzonali. Rwandans are depicted preparing grains and hides, dancing, vaulting, rowing, and digging irrigation canals, among other activities.

Scope and Contents:
Lake Kivu is one of the Great Lakes of Africa. It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, at the altitude of 1,463 m, and is in the Albertine (western) Rift, a part of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika. Lake Kivu sits very close to the neighboring Nyiragongo Volcano and is one of three known volcanic lakes. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Westinghouse Film and traveled to Africa from October 26, 1970 to end of March 1971.

Scope and Contents:
Lake Kivu is one of the Great Lakes of Africa. It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, at the altitude of 1,463 m, and is in the Albertine (western) Rift, a part of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika. Lake Kivu sits very close to the neighboring Nyiragongo Volcano and is one of three known volcanic lakes. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
