Miscellaneous correspondence of Walter Heil, regional director of PWAP, 1934; form letters from Edward Bruce, national director; and a typescript reminiscence of the PWAP and a letter from Ray Strong addressed to Mary McChesney and dated 1964.[Microfilm title, "Ray Strong"]
Biographical / Historical:
Federally funded art project of the Treasury Department initiated in order to provide jobs for unemployed artists during the Depression. Under the PWAP the country was divided into 16 regions each of which had its own director who answered to the national director in Washington, D.C. The PWAP was succeeded by the Section of Painting and Sculpture, which subsequently became the Section of Fine Arts.

Lent for microfilming 1964 by the M.H. De Young Museum.

An interview of Ray Strong conducted 1993 September 14, by Paul Karlstrom, for the Archives of American Art, at the artist's studio, in Santa Barbara, California. Strong discusses his family background and early art education; his move to San Francisco and contact with Jimmy Swinnerton, Maynard Dixon, and Frank Van Sloun; studying at California School of Fine Arts; his feeling of responsibility for art and nature; his murals at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco, 1934; and his involvement with socialist causes.

Three scrapbooks of clippings, 1925-1969; exhibition catalogs, 1946-1992; photographs of landscapes, landscape paintings, and Strong at work; and a sketchbook entitled "Ray Strong & Eric Panfitt's Ideas Book;" and miscellaneous printed material. Also included is an additional unbound scrapbook, 1927-1993, consisting of 34 items including printed material, personal and professional letters to Ray, transcripts of letters from Strong, photographs of works of art, a drawing, and photographs of Ray Strong.
