General note:
The first owner of Roslyn Hall (also known as the Garvan Estate) 101-acre estate was Stanley Mortimer, who had the Tudor style mansion built in 1891 by the architect James Brown Lord, and the garden designed by landscape architect Nathan Franklin Barrett. There were stone steps and gravel walkways with large plantings of evergreens and other trees and expanses of ground cover, tea gardens, and barns. An ornate wishing well stood in the center of the circular driveway in front of the house. The property was sold to Francis Patrick Garvan (1875-1937) in 1919, who hired Olmsted Associates landscape architects ca. 1930. Copper beech trees were planted by Olmsted Associates. Some of the original garden features remain, including stone arches and garden architecture, but the house, except the chapel, which was demolished in 1974 by developer Robert Praver who subdivided the property.
Francis P. Garvan (b.1875-1937) was a prominent New York attorney as well as the president of the Chemical Foundation of America. The Mabel Brady Garvan Collection (10, 00 items including art and decorative arts) are at Yale University. His correspondences concerning his collections are in the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art.
Nathan Franklin Barrett (b.1845-1919), who designed the first gardens for Stanley Mortimer, was one of the earliest landscape architects in the US, beginning his professional practice in the 1870s.

General note:
Thomas Warren Sears (b.1880-1966) was a landscape architect who said his own garden in Ardmore, Pennsylvania was his favorite, and the formal style of his garden became his trademark design for private residences. The garden center was a sunken rectangular lawn, surrounded by low stone walls, terraces and flagstone walkways that were planted with a mixture of shrubs, perennial flowers, and ground covers, and separated from the stone house by a screen of trees. A tall stone wall at the end of the garden had a fountain inset.
Thomas Sears' formal garden was planted with more than fifty varieties of French lilacs, peonies and irises.
Sears was among the first landscape architects with a formal education, receiving the BS degree from the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard University in 1906. During his professional career as a landscape architect Sears worked primarily in Maryland, North Carolina, New York, and Pennsylvania. He designed private gardens in the style of his own: sunken rectangular lawns with perennial and shrub borders that surmounted low walls and steps. Among his prominent commissions were Reynolda, home of tobacco magnate R. J. Reynolds, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where the formal gardens Sears laid out in 1916 were later added to the campus of Wake Forest University; the amphitheater at Swarthmore College in 1942; Balmuckety in Pikesville, Maryland, placed on the Baltimore County Historic register in 1988; and the restoration of the Colonial Revival gardens at Pennsbury in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Sears was also known for his published photographs of gardens and natural settings in the US and other countries.

General note:
Breeze Hill was a Victorian clapboard house and gardens on two and a half acres in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Planting began in 1909 by J. Horace McFarland (b.1859-1948). The informal garden rooms were made up of contoured beds. Over many years of planting, re-planting, testing new cultivars and replacing unsuccessful specimens it is estimated that more than 5,000 rose plants comprising 800 varieties were grown by McFarland. Although best known for roses, the garden at Breeze Hill also grew native plants, beds of spring bulbs, peonies, lilac and mock orange borders, and a lily pond.
Known as 'Doctor Rose,' J. (John) Horace McFarland was president of the American Rose Society (1930-1932) and helped to transform it from a growers' trade association to a public institution, with the slogan "A rose for every home, a bush for every garden." He was editor and publisher of American Rose Annual and American Rose Magazine (1916-1943), and established the generally accepted rose identification and registration method. Breeze Hill's gardens were used as trial sites for new rose cultivars. The Peace Rose, a French cultivar hybridized by Francis Meilland that was sent out of that country for safekeeping during World War II, was planted at Breeze Hill, and popularized by the American Rose Society. Three new roses were named for J. Horace McFarland: Editor McFarland, Horace McFarland, and The Doctor. He received the Dean Hole Memorial Medal in 1942 from The National Rose Society of England, the Jane Righter Medal of the Garden Club of America in 1942, the Pugsley Gold Medal of the American Scenic and Historical Preservation Society in 1937, and many other awards related to horticulture.
His professional life, as owner of Mt. Pleasant Press, was recognized with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Dickinson College in 1924, and occasional lectures at Harvard University. McFarland was an innovator in producing and printing color photography, and his company was pre-eminent in printing flower and seed catalogs, and other horticultural work. He produced about 50,000 photographs of specimen blooms or displays from his own garden and elsewhere that were made available for reproduction.

Summary:
The collection consists of approximately 1,950 glass plate and large format film negatives,100 hand-tinted and black-and-white prints and four photographic albums containing prints of various sizes, taken by Chief Solomon Osagie Alonge, the royal photographer to the Oba of Benin, Akenzua II (1933-1978). These images span six decades (1926 - 1989) and represent a dynamic, continuous record of the Benin Royal Court in Nigeria. Alonge documented the pageantry, ritual and regalia of the Obas, their wives and retainers for over a half-century, including the coronation of the King and the Iyoba, or queen mother. The collection also documents historic visits to Benin by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip (1956), Princess Alexandra (1960), foreign dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders and celebrities. The collection preserves an important historical record of Benin art and culture during the periods of British colonial rule and Nigerian independence in the 20th century. The rarity and historical value of the collection are enhanced by Alonge's privileged access to the Palace as a chief in the Iwebo Palace Society, a position which presents a unique insider's view of Benin royalty. The quality of the collection is testament to Alonge's technological skills in photography and his professionalism in keeping the collection ordered and well-preserved despite the heat, humidity and tropical climate of Nigeria.

Biographical/Historical note:
Chief Solomon Osagie Alonge (1911-1994) was the first indigenous photographer of the Royal Court of Benin and one of the premier photographers of Nigeria. His significance as one of the earliest indigenous photographers in West Africa has been documented in detail by anthropologist Flora Kaplan. Alonge learned the craft of photography as a youth in Lagos during the 1920s and saw his profession as an honorable and distinguished calling. He clearly demonstrated an inclusive documentary perspective in his efforts to photograph many aspects of the world around him. In 1942, Alonge established the Ideal Photography Studio in Benin City and documented colonial society, the establishment of churches and businesses, and the formation of new civic organizations and social groups like the Benin Social Club (1940s). As a commercial photographer, Alonge photographed individual and group portraits, preserving a visual record of the everyday lives and peoples of Benin City. Alonge's studio portraits illustrate how local Africans presented themselves to the camera and engaged with the practice of photography during the early to mid-twentieth century.

Summary:
The Boris V. Timchenko collection includes project files, business records, and personal papers of Boris Timchenko, a modernist landscape architect based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area known for his work on The Watergate Development and the annual National Capital Flower and Garden Show.
Scope and Contents:
The collection contains the professional files of landscape architect Boris V. Timchenko. These include architectural drawings and photographic prints from landscape design projects; a client list; brochures Timchenko used to promote his firm; and photographic prints showing him at work. There are a few architectural drawings related to his work on The Watergate Development in 1965 and many photographic prints from the National Capital Flower and Garden Show dated 1950-1961. The collection also contains some personal papers, including forms and licenses Timchenko acquired from the Russian and United States governments; certificates from a French university he attended; correspondence; portraits and photographic prints of his leisure activities; and newspaper profiles and obituaries about him. The collection documents only a portion of Timchenko's known professional design work and personal life.

Biographical / Historical:
Boris Timchenko (1898-1975) was a modernist landscape architect based in the Washington, D.C. area. Boris Vladimir Timchenko, who occasionally spelled his last name "Timtchenko" early in his life, was born in Tambov, Russia on October 1, 1898 to Vladimir Peter Timchenko and Nataly Nazarewsky. He lived in Lipetsk, Russia until he attended Moscow University from 1916-1918. From 1918-1920, he served in the White Russian Army but fled to France when Communist Bolsheviks defeated his army. He studied landscape architecture at what he termed a "Horticulture School" (possibly the École Nationale Supérieure d'Horticulture) in Versailles until 1924, and earned a degree in Agricultural Engineering at the École Nationale de Agriculture de Grignon in Grignon, France in 1926. A year later, he emigrated to the United States and worked for a landscape contractor, A. Gude Sons & Company, in Washington, D.C.

Timchenko started his own landscape architecture firm, Boris Timchenko and Associates, in Washington in 1938. Along with his colleague Leonard Bartlett, Jr., Timchenko designed outdoor spaces in the D.C. metropolitan area, Pennsylvania, and coastal Florida. (Most of the plans in the Boris V. Timchenko collection were drawn by 'L. B.' (Leonard Bartlett, Jr.) and checked by 'b. t.' (Boris V. Timchenko.) Timchenko He is perhaps best known as being the landscape architect for The Watergate Development in Washington, D.C. and the consulting designer for the National Capital Flower and Garden Show from 1950 to 1967. He also created private gardens for notable clients such as former First Lady Mamie Eisenhower and the Auchincloss family, owners of Hammersmith Farm in Newport, Rhode Island. Organizations and businesses, such as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in D.C. and the historic Gadsby's Tavern in Alexandria, Virginia, hired him as well.

Timchenko was a member of professional organizations including the American Institute of Landscape Architects (later American Society of Landscape Architects) and the Texas Association of Nurserymen. He was a founding member of the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas in D.C. By the time he died in 1975, Timchenko had contributed significantly to the design of D.C.'s urban landscape.

This series documents the professional and personal life of Dr. Charles E. Qualls between 1937 and 1982. It contains materials related to Dr. Qualls's education, community involvement, pharmacy business, and leisure activities. Included in the materials are correspondence, clippings, invitations, photographs, professional journals, program booklets, and playbills from performing arts shows. Found within the papers are documents related to his wife, Aleneitha Qualls.
Biographical:
Dr. Charles E. Qualls(1932- 1984) was an entrepreneur, pharmacist, and civil leader in Washington, D.C.

Qualls was born in New Bern, Tennessee to Fred and Ary Watts Qualls, after his birth the family moved to South Bend, Indiana. Charles moved to Washington, D.C. in 1936 to attend Howard University, where he graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1941. After graduation, he achieved his dream of becoming a business owner when he opened his drug store, the Anacostia Pharmacy. Two years later, Dr. Qualls married Aleneitha Johnson of Conway, South Carolina and the couple had one son, Frederic Qualls.

He became "Doc Qualls" to all who knew him, and the Anacostia Pharmacy became a fixture for the community. Throughout his career, Mr. Qualls strived to improve the business in Anacostia and to bring city services to its residents. He was chair and organizer of Anacostia Coordinating Committee of the Anacostia and Vicinity, which represented church, school and civic groups before local government agencies; and he was a charter member and first president of the Anacostia Business and Professional Association.

His influence in Anacostia and District of Columbia extended beyond the interests of local businesses to the health of Anacostia's residents. Dr. Qualls founded the Washington Pharmaceutical Association in 1947; he was also instrumental in the establishment of a Southeast Unit of the D.C. Chapter of the National Cancer Society. A trustee of Greater Southeast Community Hospital, Qualls lobbied and fundraised for the hospital in the underserved community.

In 1984 at the age of 72, Charles E. Qualls died of cancer at Howard University Hospital.

Found here is Sidney C. Woodward's personal and professional correspondence and collected letters pertaining to Woodward's relationships with various artists, galleries, and arts organizations.

Included are many letters sent by Sidney's twin brother, Stanley, while he was serving as a Corporal in Field Artillery during World War I and later as an Air Corps captain during World War II. Correspondence with Stanley primarily concerned his painting career, including some post card representations of his work.

Artists that Woodward corresponded with and collected letters include Ernest L. Blumenschein, Harrison Cady, Robert Henri, C. Lewis Hind, Rockwell Kent, John La Farge, Hermann Dudley Murphy, Violet Oakley, Water Pach, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, and Chauncey Foster Ryder, among many others. Notable 19th century letters are written by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, John White Alexander, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Edwin Church, Winslow Homer, Francis Davis Millet, Thomas Moran, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, William Trost Richards, John Singer Sargent, and Thomas Sully.

Also found here is correspondence with arts organizations, schools, and news organizations. This includes the Christian Science Publishing Society, the Erskine School, Frost & Reed, Knoedler & Co., and Robert C. Vose Galleries.

Some photographs of artists are also included in folders of correspondence, including a portrait of Johannes Adam S. Oertel.

Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by person or organization name. Scope and Contents:
The papers of New York-based painter, teacher and art director Anna Walinska measure 2.1 linear feet and date from 1927 to 2002, with the bulk of material from 1935 to 1980. The papers include biographical material, correspondence, writings, travel diaries, printed material, scrapbooks, artwork, sketchbooks, and photographs.

Biographical material consists of awards, certificates, curriculum vitae, biographical outlines, exhibition lists, passports and other material. There is a partial transcript from a radio interview of Anna Walinska. Also included are limited financial records.

Correspondence includes Anna Walinska's letters to her family from her 1954-1955 trip abroad to multiple countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. There is personal and professional correspondence with friends, artists and art institutions. Notable correspondents include Milton Avery, Louise Nevelson, Beata Welsing, Bracha Hacohen, William Littlefield, and Walinska's brother Louis Walinsky.

Writings consist of Walinska's notes, notebooks, lectures, essays, and a handwritten prospectus for Guild Art Gallery. There is one folder of writings by others about Walinska at the end of the series. There are four travel diaries that describe Walinska's trip around the world from 1954-1955, during which she traveled to many countries, and later trips to locations such as Israel and Trinidad.

Printed Material include clippings about Anna Walinska, group and solo exhibition catalogs, announcements, event invitations, and course catalogs for the Master Institute of United Art in New York City, where Walinska taught painting and drawing classes.

There are three scrapbooks: one scrapbook is about Guild Art Gallery, the second scrapbook is about the Holocaust exhibition, the third oversized scrapbook documents Walinska's career and activities overall.

Artwork consists of two bound sketchbooks as well as drawings and sketches in a variety of mediums from pencil and ink to watercolors and oils.

Photographs are of Walinska, friends, family, artists, artwork, exhibition installations, and other subjects. One album includes photos of Anna Walinska and her travels, along with images of friends and colleagues. The second album includes photographs of Walinska's solo exhibition at Sunken Meadow Gallery (1959). There is also one folder of photocopies of photos of assorted artwork by Walinska.

Biographical / Historical:
Anna Walinska (1906-1997) was a New York artist, teacher and gallery director who traveled widely and is most well known for her paintings related to the subject of the Holocaust.

Anna Walinska was born in London, England in 1906 to labor organization leader Ossip Walinsky and poet Rosa Newman Walinska. She had two siblings, Emily and Louis. The family immigrated to New York City in 1914, and Anna Walinska began studying at the Art Students League in 1918. In 1926, she travelled to Paris and studied art at the Academie de Grande Chaumier with Andre L'Hote. France was her primary residence until 1930.

In 1935, Walinska and artist Margaret Lefranc co-founded the Guild Art Gallery at West 57th Street in New York and gave Arshile Gorky his first solo exhibition in the city. The gallery closed its doors in 1937. In 1939, Walinska was the Assistant Creative Director of the Contemporary Art Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. During this time, Walinska also pursued her own art and exhibited work in numerous group shows.

From 1954 to 1955, Walinska traveled around the world, visiting the capitals and major cities of many countries in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Places she went included Japan, Burma (now known as Myanmar), Pakistan, Greece, Italy, France and Spain. During her four month stay in Burma, she painted a portrait of Prime Minister U Nu and she later became a highly respected portrait artist who painted numerous illustrious subjects such as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, artists Louise Nevelson and Mark Rothko, and many others.

In 1957, Walinska became the artist-in-residence at the Riverside Museum where she also taught and exhibited with other artists. That same year, she had her first retrospective at the Jewish Museum in New York City.

Walinska exhibited widely and often. Holocaust: Paintings and Drawings, 1953-1978, which opened at the Museum of Religious Art at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, is probably the most well-known of her exhibitions and it traveled across the country to several other sites such as the War Memorial Building in Baltimore and Mercy College of Detroit. Works from this exhibition were acquired by multiple museums to become part of their permanent collections.

Walinkska died on December 19, 1997 at the age of 91 in New York City. In 1999, there was a retrospective of her work titled Echoes of the Holocaust: Paintings, Drawings, and Collage, 1940-1989 held at Clark University's Center for Holocaust Studies. The Onisaburo Gallery at New York's Interfaith Center also held a solo exhibition titled Portraits of Faith (2000). Her art is part of the collections at the Denver Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Rose Art Museum, and other museums.

Provenance:
The papers were donated by Anna Walinska in two installations in 1976 and 1981. Rosina Rubin, Anna Walinska's niece, made a third donation of material in 2017.
