research programs with institutions of higher learning in other countries and fosters programs for the international exchange of persons in those fields of science and humanities
related to the Smithsonian Institution's interests. Especially well documented are activities relating to preservation of the temples of Abu Simbel in Egypt, threatened in
1964 by waters of the Aswan Dam, and the establishment in 1968 of the Indian Ocean island of Aldabra as an international conservation area.
