Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of records created and maintained by James Counts Early, Assistant Provost for Educational and Cultural Programs, 1994-1995; Assistant Secretary
for Education and Cultural Programs, 1994; Assistant Secretary for Education and Public Service, 1992-1994; Assistant Secretary for Public Programs, 1991; Acting Assistant
Secretary for Public Service, 1990; Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Service, 1988-1989; and Executive Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Public Service, 1984-1987.
The majority of the records document his activities related to promoting diversity among staff and multicultural education and outreach as well as establishing international
cultural relations. Smaller amounts of records document Early's professional activities and relations at the Smithsonian Institution, throughout the United States, and throughout
the world. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, reports, clippings, lecture scripts, writings, photographs, audiotapes, ephemera, and related materials. Some materials
were created after the position of the Assistant Provost for Educational and Cultural Programs was abolished and Early joined the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural
Studies (later the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage), but were closely related to projects begun earlier. Some materials pre-date Early's employment at the Smithsonian
Institution.
