Scope and Contents:
Typescript of Shelton's unpublished autobiography, in which he writes of his boyhood in New York and his experiences in the Civil War. Shelton also describes his career as an artist-illustrator in New York City, beginning in 1871, work for LESLIE'S, HARPER'S, CENTURY, and the NEW YORK LEDGER, how engraving was done, the beginning of the artists' colony at Cold Spring Harbor with Stanley Reinhart, Arthur Quartley, and others, the work of Frank Smith, the colony at East Hampton, and recollections of the Tile Club and the Salmagundi Club.

Biographical sketches, Peterson's will, five letters, writings on art-related subjects, drawings for her book, FLOWER PAINTING, scrapbook pages, clippings, an exhibition catalog, a copy of FLOWER PAINTING, a copy of J. Jonathan Joseph's book, JANE PETERSON and photographs of Peterson, her family and her homes.
In addition to six biographical accounts and Peterson's will with two codicils (dated 1960-1966), correspondence consists of a 1909 letter from G. Sorolla concerning travel details, 3 letters (1924-1959) to Peterson concerning the exhibition of her work; and an announcement for her 1939 wedding to James S. McCarthy. Thirteen brief essays (1917-1951) discuss Peterson, her travels, and her opinions of artists, including 2 essays about F. Hopkinson Smith, a poem "To Jane Peterson" by Hazel King Tillman and twenty-six of Peterson's drawings for FLOWER PAINTING.
Fragmented pages from 2 scrapbooks (1907-1910 and 1925-1928) contain clippings and six letters. Printed materials also include clippings (1909-1968), a 1925 exhibition catalog for Peterson's Constantinople paintings at the Ehrich Galleries, New York; a copy of FLOWER PAINTING (1946) and a copy of J. Jonathan Joseph's JANE PETERSON: AN AMERICAN ARTIST (1981). Photographs (1926-1950) depict Peterson, her family and homes, Peterson painting in her studio, her garden, and on the beach, as well as views of docked sailboats and the Canadian Rockies.

Painter. Studied with Frank Brangwyn and G. Sorolla. Married to M. Bernard Philipp, then to James S. McCarthy.

The papers were collected by the donor, J. Jonathan Joseph, in the course of research on Peterson.

Biographical / Historical:
Alfred Williams Anthony (1860-1939) was a theologian, author, and educator in Lewiston, Maine. He served in various roles for the General Conference of Freewill Baptists, the Maine chapter of the Religious Education Association, and the Committee on Goodwill between Jews and Christians. Anthony also served on the boards of trustees for Bates College, Hillsdale College, and Brown University.
