Made on September 26, 1978, they include images of the Zuni individuals Alonzo Hustito, Allen Kallestewa, Chester Mahooty, and Edmund J. Ladd. The photographs also depict T. J. Ferguson of the University of Arizona School of Anthropology, and William W. Fitzhugh, William C. Sturtevant, John Canfield Ewers, Bruce David Smith, and James A. Hanson of the Smithsonian Institution.

The Zuni delegation pictured in this collection came to the Smithsonian to investigate and discuss the Institution's holdings of Zuni religious objects, September 25-27, 1978.

Photographs documenting presentation of Henry Lookout's manuscripts to his descendants, made in the Director's office of the National Museum of Natural History on September 27, 1990. Depicted individuals include George Big Eagle, Olivia Mashunkashey Bristow (daughter of Henry Lookout), Tom E. Fugate, Michele Easley, Anita West, Frank Talbot, Ives Goddard, Douglas Evelyn (Deputy Director, NMAH), Peggy Anderson (Talbot's assistant), Melinda Zeder (Deputy Chairman, Anthropology), James R. Glenn (National Anthropological Archives), Cory Gilliland (Numismatics, NMAH), Elvira Stefanelli (Director, National Numismatics Center), and Bruce Smith (Acting Chairman, Anthropology).
Biographical/Historical note:
Henry Lookout (Osage), made an indefinite loan of documents (NAA MS 4405 and 4406) and a Jefferson Peace Medal (NAA MS 4407) to the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1952. His descendents later requested the return of the material and all items except the peace medal were repatriated in the Director's office of the National Museum of Natural History on September 27, 1990. The medal was purchased by the National Museum of American History and remains in its collection.

Scope and Contents:
The papers of Bruce Smith contain materials relating to research, lectures, publications, and conferences as well as his NMNH administrative files. Present in the collection are field materials relating to Smith's work at the Gypsie Joint site in Ripley County, Missouri. His research files also include data and photos of wild plants, chenopodium fruits, gourds, and squash from various sites including the Ozarks, Guila Naquitz, Balsas River valley, Coxcatlan Cave, Valenzuela's Cave, and Phillips Spring. Material concerning the Mound Division Conference of the Lower Mississippi Survey pertain to a meeting arranged by Smith at the Smithsonian. The collection also contains artwork for his publications, including paintings of Powers Phase settlements for a chapter Smith wrote for the Smithsonian publication "The American Land."

Biographical Note:
Bruce David Smith is Curator Emeritus of North American Archaeology in the Department of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in 1973 and taught at Loyola University of Chicago and at University of Georgia before joining the staff of NMNH in 1978. He is a specialist in the archaeology of eastern United States, particularly Mississippian (Temple Mound) culture, focusing on human-environmental interaction. Since 1985, his research has focused on the origins of agriculture. He has also collaborated with geneticists in studying evolutionary changes in ancient crop plants. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2003 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011.
