This series contains correspondence, notes, articles, and bound volumes relating to sign language. The materials are generally filed by Native American culture area or world region, and documents that do not pertain to any one region are filed under "miscellaneous." Bound volumes include two copies of A Collection of Gesture-Signs and Signals of the North American Indians and Introduction to the Study of Sign Languages Among the North American Indians. Boxes 10 and 11 contain annotated pages from a first printing of A Collection of Gesture-Signs and Signals of the North American Indians with notations by collaborators on the project.

Scope and Contents:
Full film record documents the Enga, a sedentary subsistence horticulturalist group of the Enga Province found west of Mount Hagen in Papua New Guinea. Footage was used as part of a study of a form of sign language used by a deaf girl named Imanoli. This study was also used to determine the extent to which features of Enga grammar is found in the sign language. Documented is a conversation between Dr. Ranier Lang and Imanoli which is translated into sign language by Imanoli's hearing sister. Included are 47 signed utterances and lengthy narrative passages from Imanoli.
