Photographs depicting a Javanese dance group performing Serimpi dance.

Biographical/Historical note:

Tassilo Adam (1878-1948?) was born in Munich and moved to Sumatra to work in the Dutch planting business. He moved to the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), where he first worked as an ethnologist for the Dutch government. He then spent five years filming and making photographs in the court of the Sultan of Java. In 1929, he was appointed associate curator of Ethnology and assistant curator of Eastern Art at the Brooklyn Museum.
