Scope and Contents:
Renowned Chef Jacques Pépin has written more than two dozen cookbooks and hosted more than 13 popular public television cooking series. His collaboration with Julia Child in the PBS TV series, Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home, won an Emmy Award and a James Beard Foundation award in 2001. Pépin recently completed filming his 14th cooking series for PBS, Jacques Pépin Heart & Soul, for KQED in San Francisco, which airs in the fall of 2015, in time for Pépin's 80th birthday. A companion cookbook, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers, will be released in early October, 2015.

Born in Bourg-en-Bresse, France, near Lyon, Pépin's love for cooking developed when, as a child, he helped in his parents' restaurant, Le Pélican. At 13, he began an apprenticeship at the Grand Hôtel de L'Europe and subsequently worked in Paris, ultimately serving as personal chef to three French heads of state, including Charles de Gaulle. After moving to the United States in 1959, Pépin first worked at Le Pavillon, a storied French restaurant in New York City. From 1960 to 1970, he was director of research and new development for Howard Johnson's and developed recipes for the restaurant chain. At the same time, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Columbia University.

A former columnist for The New York Times, his articles have appeared in countless food magazines, notably Food & Wine. He is the recipient of honorary doctorate degrees from five American universities and was awarded France's highest civilian honor, Le Legion d'Honneur, in 2004, as well as the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres in 1997 and the Mérite Agricole in 1992. For the past 30 years, he has taught in the Culinary Arts Program at Boston University and served as dean of special programs at the International Culinary Center in New York City since 1989.

An active supporter of many non-profit organizations, Pépin serves on the board and is a spokesperson for Spoons Across America, an educational program which teaches children and families about healthy eating; and, he participates annually in events for Share our Strength and Taste of the Nation, which are dedicated to ending childhood hunger in America. Also a gifted painter, Pépin has expanded his focus on special menus, landscapes and floral subject matter to explore abstract expressionism.

Named one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People" in both 2012 and 2018, and awarded "Outstanding Chef" and "Humanitarian of the Year" by the James Beard Foundation, José Andrés is an internationally-recognized culinary innovator, New York Times best-selling author, educator, television personality, humanitarian, and chef/owner of ThinkFoodGroup. A pioneer of Spanish tapas in the United States, he is also known for his groundbreaking avant-garde cuisine and his award-winning group of more than 30 restaurants located throughout the country and beyond, ranging in a variety of culinary experiences from a food truck to his multi-location vegetable-focused fast casual Beefsteak, to world-class tasting menus like two Michelin-starred minibar by José Andrés.

Andrés is the only chef globally that has both a two-star Michelin restaurant and four Bib Gourmands. As a naturalized citizen originally from Spain, Andrés has been a tireless advocate for immigration reform. In 2010, Andrés formed World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that provides smart solutions to end hunger and poverty by using the power of food to empower communities and strengthen economies. Notably, his team served over 3.6 million meals to the people of Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, an experience about which he wrote the bestselling book We Fed An Island: The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico, One Meal at a Time. Andrés has earned numerous awards, including the 2015 National Humanities Medal.

Photographs are of Cox from childhood to the 1980s; his family including parents, siblings, and grandparents; friends including Philip Trammell Shutze and Warner Bishop; family residences; artist models; events; and artwork, including many of Cox's commissions.

Series includes vintage photographic media including: 2 tintypes of Cox and his siblings at Grant's tomb; 2 tintypes of Leonard Cox; an ambrotype of Anna Stott King, Louise Cox's mother; photos, including a cyanotype and a tintype of Louise Cox; a cyanotype, of Cox's grandmother Helen Finney Cox; photos of Cox's grandfathers, General Jacob Dolson Cox, and Reverend Charles G. Finney; and a circa 1910 platinum print, probably of Ethel Cox, by the Misses Selby.

Vintage photos of Kenyon Cox include 3 tintypes; 2 carte de visites in the studio of George Becker; a silver gelatin print by Pirie Macdonald, circa 1905; a period reproduction of a portrait, circa 1885; and a photo of an engraved portrait, circa 1895. Additional photos of Louise and Kenyon Cox include a series of circa 1906 photographs taken in a garden with their children and other unidentified people.

Photos of Allyn Cox and family include portraits and photos of Cox with Ethel Cox. Photographs of Cox working include two 1920 photo postcards of him at work on an unidentified mural in Rome, and photos of him working in the United States Capitol. Also found are photos by John Barrington Bayley taken inside an unidentified church; and various black and white and color snapshots. Several photos of Cox with members of Congress include one with President Gerald Ford.

Photos of houses and residences include snapshots of Villa La Cappilla and Villa Malatesta labeled as "mother's house in Honolulu," a group labeled "Essex, Massachusetts," and another group labeled "Essex and N.Y. houses." Also found are photos of other residences in Italy, and several postcards of the Cox residence in Cornish, New Hampshire.

Many of Cox's commissions are documented in photographs of artwork, including Dumbarton Oaks, interiors of many private residences, the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association Temple, the interior of the Lido Venice restaurant in New York shown in a series of 1926 photographs by Kenneth Clark, the United States Capitol, the William A. Clarke Memorial Library, and several photos which originally formed part of a dismantled scrapbook. Scattered photos of Cox at work can also be found with these photos. Formats include photographic prints, slides, and negatives. 10 glass plate negatives of artwork by Cox are housed separately and are closed to researchers.

Scope and Contents:
Comprises of material documenting the legal, packaging, sales and promotional activities of the company beginning with its participation in the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915. At the exposition Hills Bros. installed and operated the first automatic machine created to vacuumed-pack coffee. Other materials from the expo include rules and regulations governing the delivery, location, installation, maintenance, and transportation of exhibits and merchandise. The Museum's Division of Cultural History has some of the artifacts relating to the exposition.

Legal records, including court documents for the Federal Trade Commission versus Hills Bros. Company case in 1925 and the United States Department of Justice, Anti-Trust Investigation, 1948, are included among the materials. There is correspondence granting Hills Bros. exclusive rights to use "Hot Coffee" for radio and advertising purposes and information relating to the company's cooperation with the National Recovery Administration, President's Reemployment Agreement. In addition, there is correspondence collected by the company relating to rumors, religion, and race dating from 1958-1964.

Packaging materials dating from 1931-1969 primarily document the history and uses of various types of containers used by Hills Bros. for its products and labels. Included among these materials are a paper written by Ralph Vilas discussing the historical evidence of vacuum packaging from 1931-1934, correspondence and photographs of packaging for the "Blue Brand," an article discussing the selling and merchandising of carton coffee, memos and newspaper clippings relating to vacuum packing, a paper discussing the tinplate used in can making, requirements for packaging, and information relating to the coffee can using an Ansel Adams' photograph.

In the 1930s Hills Bros. created the Arab Chronicle and Broadsides which, were primarily distributed to retail grocers. These publications were the size of newspapers and folded to about one-sixth of a page for mailing. They consisted of photographs, advertisements, information relating to new advertising campaigns, advice to increase sales, and news of events around the world. In addition to the final copies there are also drafts of the articles for each issue.

Promotional materials relating to a coffee house created in 1958 by the company at Disneyland in Anaheim, California can also be found. The coffee house operated as a restaurant for several years and provided a sandwich-type menu with its coffee products. It was also used as a facility for taste-testing by the marketing research department.

In the 1960s Hills Bros. owned and operated three vans known as Hillsmobiles. The Hillsmobiles were used for promotion sales in various communities. The vans would ride through the neighborhoods distributing free samples of coffee. Included among the materials are letters, memos, and manuals for the promotion and operation of the Hillsmobiles as well as photographs, images, and negatives of the vehicles.

Random materials include a Gertz Bros. Company catalogue dating from 1925, information about Chase and Sanborn coffee, maps illustrating where to go in New England, a marketing map of the United States used as a practical aid for economic sales and advertising, and information about St. Augustine's oldest store museum. Materials in this series are arranged in chronological order.

Summary:
Collection consists of restaurant menus ranging from 1937 to 2016 from the Unites States, Canada, as well as cruise ships.
Scope and Contents:
A collection of resetaurant menus from 1937 to 1999, but with the majority from the 1950s. While a large number are from California, especially the Los Angeles area, the menus come from twenty U.S. states, plus the Virgin Islands, Canada, and a few are from cruise ships. The menus tend to be picturesque or have colorful illustrations. Cowboy and western themes are emphasized and some of the menus are in novel or odd shapes. Some menus from famous restaurants are included such as Palmer House in Chicago, Old Original Bookbinders in Philadelphia, and Tavern on the Green in New York.

Collection is arranged alphabetically by restaurant name into file comprising 1 series.
Biographical / Historical:
Largely from the 1950s, these menus are evidence of American imagery, food prices, and food culture.

An interview of Michael Simon conducted 2005 September 27-28, by Mark Shapiro, for the Archives of American Art's Nanette L. Laitman Documentation Project for Craft and Decorative Arts in America, at the artist's home, in Colbert, Georgia.
Simon discusses studying at University of Minnesota with Warren MacKenzie; the counterculture and chaotic atmosphere at the university in the late 1960s; moving to Athens, Georgia, after college to open a studio on Jerry Chappelle's farm; his first pottery sales; obtaining conscientious objector status and working at a hospital in Athens; the influence of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada on his work; developing shapes and expanding his repertoire; being inspired by Korean folk potters and by other Asian pottery; teaching at the Penland School of Arts and Crafts and being influenced by fellow potters there; art fairs in Atlanta, Florida, and elsewhere; using various materials for his pots, including Georgia kaolin and grolleg; applying for a fellowship at the University of Georgia, where he completed his Master's of Fine Arts; seeing Mark Pharis's pots in the summer of 1980, which compelled him to build his own salt kiln, which changed subsequent work dramatically; his marriage to Susan Roberts in 1992; experimenting with images on his pots, including fish and bamboo; getting a large commission for dinner plates from the Nakato Restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, one of the city's oldest sushi restaurants; visiting the Freer Sackler Galleries and being inspired by Chinese Yangshao pottery from the Neolithic period; the influence of Persian jars on his work; the success of his pottery sales with Ron Myers; going to Cortona, Italy, to teach pottery for the University of Georgia; teaching at a school in Santiago, Chile, exploring the countryside, and learning Chilean pottery techniques; the writing of Michael Cardew and its influence on his work and career; what constitutes a typical work day and what motivates him; and the community of American potters and the support he has received over the years. Simon also recalls Angel Lillo, Laurie Samuelson, Gib Krohn, Mark Pharis, Wayne Branum, Sandra Simon (née Lindstrom), Earl McCutcheon, Shoji Hamada, Cynthia Bringle, Ron Myers, Andy Nasisse, Robert Briscoe, Michael Cardew, and others.

Michael Simon (1947-2021) was a functional ceramist from Athens, Georgia. Mark Shapiro (1955- ) is a ceramist from Worthington, Massachusetts.
