Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of records documenting the administration of the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program (GLTCP). Originally administered entirely by the National
Zoological Park (NZP), Department of Zoological Research, the GLTCP focused on the conservation of the golden lion tamarin in its natural habitat and was responsible for the
release of captive-born golden lion tamarins into the Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas (Brazil). In 1992, overall administration of the program was transferred to the Brazilian
non-governmental organization, Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado. The Department of Zoological Research continued to administer NZP's involvement in reintroduction, tracking, and
conservation education. Topics documented in this accession include fund raising, budget, conservation training, studbook administration, policies, publicity, research publication,
evaluation of calling patterns, observation of released golden lion tamarins, reintroduction logistics, and involvement with international conservation organizations and committees.
Materials include correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting materials, clippings, newsletters, observations, data evaluations, policies, procedures, permits, manuscripts,
filming requests, presentations, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, posters, images, maps, audio recordings, notes, and related materials. Some materials are in electronic
format. Some materials were created while the unit was known as the Office of Animal Management (through 1979), the Office of Animal Programs (1979-1984), or the Department
of Zoological Research and Education (1984-1985).

This accession consists of records created and maintained by Devra G. Kleiman documenting the administration of the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program (GLTCP).
Kleiman served as Scientist, 1972-1982; Acting Assistant Director for Animal Programs, 1982-1983; Assistant Director for Animal Programs, 1983-1984; Assistant Director for
Zoological Research and Education, 1984-1985; Assistant Director for Research, 1985-1996; Assistant Director of Zoological Research, 1996-1997, and Senior Scientist, 1997-2001.
Originally administered entirely by the National Zoological Park (NZP), Department of Zoological Research, the GLTCP focused on the conservation of the golden lion tamarin
in its natural habitat and was responsible for the release of captive-born golden lion tamarins into the Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas (Brazil). In 1992, overall administration
of the program was transferred to the Brazilian non-governmental organization, Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado. Kleiman and several scientific and administrative staff continued
to administer NZP's involvement in reintroduction, tracking, and conservation education. Topics documented in this accession include fund raising, conservation program administration
training for zoos, personnel administration, studbook administration, policies, intellectual property, observation of released golden lion tamarins, reintroduction logistics,
and involvement with international conservation organizations and committees. In addition to golden lion tamarins, records also document the conservation of black lion tamarins,
golden headed lion tamarins, and black faced lion tamarins.
Materials include correspondence, memoranda, reports, grant proposals, budget materials, meeting materials, training materials, GLTCP policies, copies of permits, clippings,
rights-in-data agreements, position descriptions, and related materials. Some materials were created while the unit was known as the Office of Animal Management (through 1979),

Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas (Brazil)
Date:
1986-2008
Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of handwritten field data about groups of golden lion tamarins in the Poco das Antas Biological Reserve in Brazil. Each group was identified
by a series of letters or letters and numbers. Most of the groups had been initially bred in zoos and released into the wild as part of a reintroduction effort led by the
Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program (GLTCP). Locals familiar with the territory were taught to record observations of the reintroduced animals and their born-wild offspring.
The data sheets were compiled and maintained by James M. Dietz, Research Associate, National Zoological Park, and Professor, University of Maryland. Some materials were created
under the Department of Zoological Research.
