Enrique Andales

Scope and Contents:
Materials consist primarily of correspondence, photographs, receipts, a wallet, items from the Legionarios del Trabajo, and other ephemera. The dates of the materials ranges from 1917 to 1937. It sheds some light on Enrique Andales' journey from the Philippines to the United States and the difficult life an agricultural worker in Northern California in the 1920s. In addition, some of the materials emphasizes Enrique's dedication to his membership at the fraternity, Legionarios del Trabajo. The materials clarify some information about the early life of Enrique through the correspondences in this series. Since the letters are written in Visayan, a language spoken within the southernmost islands of Luzon in the Philippines, it can be assumed that Enrique was born in the southernmost islands of Luzon and was able to speak and write in Visayan. The materials in this series does not identify any information regarding Enrique's birth and death, military service, health information, and naturalization process. The series provides a valuable insight and can be utilized as a primary source to researchers who are interested in the lives of Filipino American agricultural workers during the 1920s.
Biographical / Historical:
Enrique Andales was born on July 18, 1891, in the town of Cardova, Cebu, Philippines. There are no records documenting the early life of Andales. Furthermore, it is unclear when he left the Philippines. However, according to a California Arriving Passenger and Crew List, on March 14, 1916, Enrique arrived in the San Francisco, California from Honolulu aboard the SS Matsonia.

On December 15, 1917, during World War I, he dutifully registered for the United States draft. According to his draft card, Enrique resided in Stockton, California working as a laborer for the Shima Tract, an island in Sacramento-San Joaquin River where they grew potatoes. By the 1930, according to a 1930's Federal Census, Enrique would work as a farm laborer, specifically on asparagus farms, living with 14 other lodgers that were of Japanese or Filipino ethnicity on Alen Bunn Reyes, Rio Vista, Solano, California. Despite not having formal schooling, he possessed the ability to read and write in English and Visayan, a common language spoken in the southern Philippines such as the Cebu Province.

Enrique was not only dedicated to his work but also active in his community. He was a proud member of the Legionarios del Trabajo, specifically affiliated with the Daguhoy Lodge in the United States. This affiliation showcased his commitment to supporting the rights and welfare of laborers during the time of social and economic change.

Enrique passed away on April 24, 1938, in Stockton, California.

Julian S. Arofo

Biographical / Historical:
Julian S. Arofo was born on December 12, 1899, in Daanbantayan, Cebu, Philippine Islands.

So far, there are no records mentioning Julian leaving the Philippines. However, according to a Hawai'i Arriving Passenger and Crew List, on March 1, 1924, aboard SS Shinyo Maru, Julian arrived in Honolulu. It was be assumed that Julian emigrated to Hawaii to be employed by the Hawaiian Sugar Plantation Association like many Filipino immigrants. In later years, Julian would make his way to Stockton, California, living in at the Daguhoy Lodge at 203 East Hazelton Avenue, as listed on his World War II Draft Card. On February 14, 1942, Julian registered for his military. At the time, he stood 5 feet, 2 inches and weighed 140 pounds. By 1950, Julian continues to reside in Stockton after his military service. He worked as a laborer, earning little wages.

Julian was not only dedicated to his work but also actively engaged in his community. He was a proud member of the Legionarios del Trabajo: Dagohoy Lodge No. 528. Through his association with the fraternity, he contributed to the welfare and rights of laborers, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and mutual support among fellow workers.

On January 4, 1976, at the age of 77, Julian S Arofo died. He is buried at San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery.

Sixto Olaco

Biographical / Historical:
Sixto Olaco was born on April 19, 1892, in Candijay, Bohol, Philippines. At the age of twenty-four, Sixto set sail to Honolulu, Hawaii, aboard the S.S. Shinyo Maru. He was part of a large group of Filipino men from different parts of the Philippines who boarded the ship to work for the Hawaiian Sugar Plantation Association. According to the Hawaii arriving passenger and crew list, the ship arrived on July 12, 1917. There is a possibility that Sixto remained in Honolulu for a year. His World War I registration card documents his residence from 1917 to 1918. Olaco's arrival in California is documented in the United States index to alien case files, which lists February 1, 1921, to be his arrival date in San Francisco. In addition, according to the 1930 Federal Census, Sixto Olaco was listed as a single roomer in a house at N Street in Sacramento, California. The census mentioned that he worked as a laborer that worked odd jobs, which are not uncommon for Filipino immigrants at the time. Sixto would continue living in Sacramento and worked as a laborer for a couple more years, as recorded in a 1945 city drectories. Olaco died on October 7, 1961 at the age of sixty nine in Luis Obispo County in California at Arroyo Grande Cemetery.

Epimaco Fariola Mansueto

Biographical / Historical:
Epimaco Fariola Mansueto was born on July 17, 1902 in the Philippines. Little is known about his early life other than the fact that he obtained a grammar school education. Records documenting Mansueto leaving the Philippines. According to his World War II Army enlistment record, on October 16, 1942, Epimaco was a United States citizen and resided in San Joaquin, California, more specifically at the Daguhoy Lodge at 203 East Hazelton Avenue, where he was a member of the Legionarios del Trabajo. At this time, Epimaco was 5 feet 6 inches and weighed 128 pounds, using his youthful strength to work as a general farms hand in the agricultural fields of Northern California. Although Epimaco's family background is uncertain, records show he married later in life. Historical records such as the 1948 City Directory mentions Epimaco having a spouse named Katie Mansueto. Together, they lived in 3 Cottage row in San Francisco, California. Epimaco Fariola Mansueto died on January 8, 1988 in San Francisco, California at the age of eighty-six.

Eusebio Maglente

Biographical / Historical:
Eusebio Maglinte was born in the 1890s in Dimiao, Bohol, Philippine.* According to census records, he attended school until the fourth grade. Maglinte left his homeland aboard the S.S. Venezuela, which departed Manila on August 2, 1920, and arrived thirty day later in Honolulu, Hawaii. He made his journey with fifty-two other Filipino men, mostly from Bohol, Cebu, and Negros Oriental. These men were brought for employment by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association. This employment last for three years, before Eusebio left Hawaii aboard the S. S. President Piece, bound for San Francisco in November 1923.

Once arriving in Northern California, Eusebio undoubtedly headed for work in the fields of the Central Valley. The 1930 census shows him as a farm laborer, living with 26 other Filipino men on Georgiana Slough Road near the town of Isleton and Walnut Grove, southwest of Sacramento. Within five years, he had moved to San Joaquin Count and was living on the Wright Tract. During the 1940 census, he is listed is the same place as other 16 Filipino men, who had all worked seventeen hours the week before. The census also lists that in the previous year, Eusebio had worked twenty-six weeks and made $350.00. By 1947, Eusebio ad moved into Stockton and was listed in the City Directory at 203 E. Hazelton, still working as a laborer. Eusebio died on August 13, 1952 in Santa Clara County, California.

*Almost every record shows a different date of birth for Eusebio Maglinte. On the passenger list of his first journey to Honolulu, it is recorded as January 15, 1898. On the passenger list of his journey to San Francisco, it is listed as May 31, 1892. On his California death record, it is given as April 15, 1891.

Felimon Laga

Biographical / Historical:
Felimon Laga was born on March 1, 1900 in Bohol Province, Central Visayas, Philippines. It is unknown when Felimon left the Philippines. According to the California arriving passenger and crew list dating December 2, 1923 Felimon arrived on the port of San Francisco, California from the port of Honolulu, Hawaii. According to the 1930 Federal Census, Felimon resided in San Francisco, California, working as a porter in a hospital. In addition, although little is known about Felimon's educational background, he was able to attend school. The name of the school was not indicated in the historical records; however, it is assumed that he attended a Grammar School as the records mentioned that he was able to read, write, and speak English. Records indicate that Felimon was a roomer sharing living quarters with six other men. On June 27, 1931, Felimon Laga passed away at the age of thirty-one and was buried in Manteca, San Joaquin County, California.

Eufericino Janier

Biographical / Historical:
Eufericino Janier was born on December 27, 1896 in the Philippines. Records relating to Eufericino's early life and family could not be found. According to an arriving passenger and crew list, Janier arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii aboard the SS Golden State on October 19, 1921. It can be assumed that Eufericino traveled to Hawaii, like many Filipino men during the 1920s, to work at the Hawaiian sugar plantation. At the moment, there are no historical records mentioning Eufericino leaving Hawaii. According to California state death index, Eufericino passed away on July 5, 1970 in Stockton, California, which indicated that he left Hawaii to move to California.

Summary:
George Sidney (1916-2002) was a film director during the Golden Age of Hollywood filmmaking (1927-1954). He spent the longest period of his career at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) until the 1950s. He later produced and directed films for Columbia Pictures and Paramount Pictures. He was a president of the Directors Guild of America and an avid photographer. He was the recipient of three awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar). The collection consists of photographs, photographic negatives, personal and business materials, and film. The collection also contains material created by George Sidney's uncle, George Sidney, vaudevillian and motion picture actor.
Scope and Contents:
The George Sidney Collection consists of approximately eighty-eight cubic feet of photographs and materials from the Hollywood director George Sidney, most dealing with his career in motion pictures. Sidney was an avid photographer and collector of photographs documenting extremely well the Hollywood film community during the Studio Era (1927-1954) of filmmaking. The bulk of the collection is from Sidney's most productive years, circa 1937-1968.

MGM's motto was "More Stars than there are in Heaven" and the researcher would be advised that the extent of this collection is such that it is impossible to list and identify all of the celebrities and personalities photographed, both behind and in front of the camera. There are stills from Sidney's many productions as well as his on-set personal photographs. There are photographs from dinner parties, and many studio and film community functions. Productions are dated to their generally accepted first theatrical release date (Los Angeles and New York) and in the case of a Broadway show to their opening date.

Biographical / Historical:
George E. Sidney was born in New York, New York on October 4th, 1916 into a show business family. His father Louis K. Sidney (birth surname Kronowith) (1891-1958) was a Broadway producer, actor-manager, and one of the vice-presidents of Loew's Incorporated. Sidney's mother, Hazael Mooney (?-1969), was a vaudeville performer, part of a sister act known as The Mooney Sisters. She was a native New Yorker, daughter of prominent New York City attorney Henry Mooney. She and Louis were married at her home, 12 West 109th Street, New York. Another residence was 179 West 63rd Street.

Louis K. Sidney began working for Loew's Incorporated in 1923. He managed theatres in Denver, Pittsburgh, Toledo, Dayton, and New York. Later he was in charge of stage productions for the theatre circuit. He was in charge of MGM's East Coast film production facility in New York. He and Hazael followed son George to Los Angeles in 1937. Louis produced two motion pictures at MGM, The Big Store with the Marx Brothers and Hullabaloo. After February 1951, he was a member of the four man executive committee in charge of MGM. At his retirement in 1955, Louis K. had risen to the position of vice-president of Loew's, Incorporated. He served as vice-president and director of the Motion Picture Producers Association, as a director of the Motion Picture Relief Fund, and the Hollywood Coordinating Committee.

George Sidney had two uncles in show business, Jack Sidney, known as "Jack of Spades" a black-face comedian, and Sidney's half-uncle, George Sidney (1877-1945) (real name Samuel Greenfield), a vaudeville comic. George had a successful Broadway and screen career, most notably as the bum, Busy Izzy, a character that lasted on the vaudeville circuit from 1901-1915. His initial Broadway success was in a show entitled Welcome Stranger that ran for 309 performances. Welcome Stranger had an extensive touring schedule across the United States. In conjunction with Charlie Murray, he developed a comedy act known as Cohen and Kelly that was not only a vaudeville success but easily made the transition to motion pictures. The Cohens and Kellys films became a motion picture franchise for Universal Studios in 1924. He was married to Carrie Weber (?-1940). George was a member of the Friars Club and an avid sports fan. He owned a racehorse named Kibbitzer.

George Sidney made his on-screen debut in The Littlest Cowboy (1921) starring Tom Mix. He moved to Los Angeles in 1930. Sidney went to work as a messenger at MGM. Louis B. Mayer's nickname for Sidney was "boy". Sidney flourished at the studio and by the time he was twenty he was directing screen tests and one-reel shorts. He directed installments in the Our Gang and Little Rascals series, as well as the Pete Smith and the Crime Does Not Pay series. He won back-to-back Oscars for two of his shorts, Quicker'n a Wink (1940) and Of Pups and Puzzles (1941). His feature film directing debut was Free and Easy (1941) starring Robert Cummings. His first major film musical was the all-star, war time musical, Thousands Cheer (1943), starring Kathryn Grayson and Gene Kelly. Sidney always indicated he viewed films as entertainment and seems to have rejected the auteur theory of directing embraced by some of his well known colleagues such as John Ford and Vincent Minnelli. His film, The Three Musketeers (1948), starring Gene Kelly and Lana Turner, was one of MGM's highest grossing films in the post World War Two period. He won his third Oscar for the short, Overture to 'The Merry Wives of Windsor, in 1954. Jupiter's Darling (1955) with Esther Williams was Sidney's last film for MGM. He was loaned to Columbia Pictures to direct The Eddy Duchin Story (1956), after which his contract at MGM ended.

Sidney went on to become an independent producer and director at Columbia Pictures where he directed such films as Pal Joey (1957), starring Frank Sinatra, and Bye Bye Birdie (1963) starring Ann-Margret. He returned to MGM in the 1960s to make A Ticklish Affair (1963), starring Shirley Jones and Viva Las Vegas (1964), starring Ann-Margret and Elvis Presley. His last film was the musical Half a Sixpence (1967) starring Tommy Steele for Paramount Pictures. Sidney also directed and produced for television most notably Who Has Seen the Wind (1964). He financed and founded Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1944. He was a two-term president, 1951-1959 and 1961-1967, of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), earlier known as the Screen Directors Guild (SDG).

In his personal life, Sidney was married in 1942 to legendary MGM drama coach, Lillian "Burnsie" Burns Salzer (1903-1998). He was eight years her junior. They lived at the Sidney home (1140 Tower Road) in Beverly Hills. They divorced in the mid 1970s. For a brief time Sidney maintained a penthouse apartment for George Sidney Productions at 144 South Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills. He maintained a suite (301) in the Palm Wilshire Building, 9201 Wilshire Boulevard in the 1970s. He married his second wife, Jane Adler Robinson (?-1991), second wife and widow of actor Edward G. Robinson (1893-1974), around 1978. The house at 1140 Tower Road was sold and Sidney moved to the Robinson home at 910 Rexford Drive in Beverly Hills. Sidney married his third wife, Corinne Kegley Entratter (1937-?), widow of showman and Las Vegas entrepreneur John Entratter, in 1991. Sidney was a prolific photographer. He collected art and was apparently an avid gardener. He was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society. He died in Las Vegas, Nevada in May 2002.

Sidney related artifacts from Sidney's films are housed in the Division of Culture and the Arts, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian. There are scrapbooks donated by the Sidney Estate in the collection of the Cinema-Television Library, Doheny Library, University of Southern California, consisting of eleven volumes containing photographs, correspondence, publicity documents, and other materials, circa 1933-1963.

Julian Felicita Bernido

Julian Felecita Bernido was born on January 28, 1904, in Anda-Bohol, Philippine Islands. The details of his family background are uncertain. However, according to his World War II Draft Registration, Josephina Makinano is his nearest relative, which states that she is his half-sister. Furthermore, according to Philippines: Marriage Records, Julian had a spouse named, Victoria Seroge, and a child named Anastasia Bernido. According to a United States Federal Naturalization Records, Julian left the Manila, Philippines on September 1924 and emigrated to San Francisco, California aboard the Dollar Steamship Line. Later in his life, he would petition for naturalization, gaining his citizenship in 1948. On October 16, 1940, Julian registered for the World War II Draft. At this time, he stood 5 feet, 2 inches and weighed 170 pounds. Throughout the years, Julian would move back and forth from Stockton and San Francisco, California. Like many Filipino immigrants, Julian worked in various industries throughout his time in the United States to make ends meet. One such example is his position as a Barboy at a hotel. According to the 1950 Federal Census, Julian normally worked 40 hours a week, with the possibility of him earning little wages as the census indicated him as a Roomer with 24 other individuals. Julian died on October 1977 at the age of seventy-three.

Andres Salle Casinas was born on March 11, 1902, in Duero, Bohol, Philippine Islands. * The historical record provides no details of Andres' early life, except that the highest education he had completed was the 6th grade. Although Andres had a limited education, he was able to read and write. The exact date of when Andres left the Philippines is unknown. However, according to Index to Alien Case File, on February 15, 1924, Andres arrived in San Francisco, California. Like many young Filipino men, who emigrated to California, Andres worked in the fields of Sacramento and San Joaquin, California, working 60 hours per week. According to the 1930 and 1940 Federal Census, with an income of $720 as stated on the 1940 Federal Census, Andres barely made enough money to be able to afford his own residence, resulting in him lodging and sharing the same place with twenty-one other Filipino immigrant workers and their families. By 1940, Andres moved to Stockton, San Joaquin, California. On February 15, 1942, he enlists for the World War II Draft, where at this time, he was unemployed, stood 5 feet and 3 inches tall and weighed 137 pounds. Andres was not only hard-working but also a community-minded person. He was a member of the fraternal organization, Legionarios del Trabajo, specifically affiliated with the Daguhoy Lodge No. 528. The Legionarios del Trabajo played a crucial role in advocating for the rights and welfare of laborers during a period of significant social and economic change. On September 18, 1973, at the age of 71, Andres Salle Casinas passed away in Stockton, California

Cesario Hotora Comparativo

Cesario H. Comparativo was born on February 25, 1906, in Tubigon, Bohol, Philippines. * The historical records mention no information about Cesario's early life, except that his highest completed education is of the 8th grade level. At the age of twenty-two, Cesario left his homeland and set sail aboard President Cleveland to Honolulu, Hawai'i, which departed from Manila on December 2, 1924. Twenty days later, Cesario would arrive in Honolulu along with many other Filipino immigrants to be employed by Hawaii's sugar plantations. His employment would only last for a couple of months, before leaving Honolulu aboard the President Taft on August 20, 1925, landing on the port of San Francisco, California days later. As Cesario settles in the Northern parts of California, it is assumed that Cesario started his job in the fields of Central Valley. A 1930 Federal Census reveals that Cesario's occupation was that of a farm laborer, living with fellow Filipino men on Georgiana Slough Road, in Sacramento, California. By 1940, Cesario moved to San Joaquin, working 70 hours a week as a Field Worker and earning $800, hardly enough to be able to financially support himself. For five years, Cesario dedicated him life to his military service. On October 16, 1940, Cesario registered for the World War II Draft and remained pursuing his military service in the Navy Branch until his honarable discharge on November 1, 1945. In later years, after the completion of his military service, Cesario seek love. According to a California, Marriage Index, on June 6, 1955, Cesario marries Erma E. Knight. This marriage would only last for a few years as a 1958 City Directories showed that by 1958, the couple were no longer living together. It is unclear when the couple divorced as, for now, there are no historical record indicating Cesario and Erma's divorce. However, according to a 1970, 1972, and 1974 city directories, Cesario would remarry to a woman named Angelina. Angelina's maiden name is unknown as records document she took on her husband's last name. Cesario died on October 4, 1990 at the age of eighty-four.

Hilario Samson Cuevas was born on January 14, 1900, in Larena, Siquijor, Philippines Islands. There are no historical records indicating what Hilario's educational background was like. At the age of twenty-six Cuevas, like many young Filipino men, traveled to the United States in search of better economic opportunities. According to a Washington state arriving passenger and crew list, on May 1926, aboard the S.S President McKinley, Hilario arrived on the port of Seattle, Washington from Manila, Philippines. It is unclear where Hilario settled or what he did for a living during his early years in the United States. The first historical record indicating his address at 1944 Florida, Vallejo, California was on Hilario's World War II draft registration card, which is dated February 14, 1942. Moreover, the record indicated that he worked on Mare Island, a shipyard in Vallejo, California. In later years, according to the 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1950 city directories, his residence changed to 203 East Hazelton Avenue, Stockton, California and worked as laborer. This indicates that Hilario made his way to Stockton, where he lived and was a member of the Daguhoy Lodge of the Legionarios del Trabajo. The details of his family background are uncertain. However, his World War II Draft Registration Car lists his closest relative to be Julio Samson who also lived at 203 East Hazelton Ave in Stockton, California. This indicates that Julio was also a member of the organization. So far, there are no historical documents revealing any information regarding the death of Hilario Samson Cuevas.

Faulkner's career; his relationships with family, friends, and fellow-artists; and his thoughts on art and artists are documented in biographical materials, correspondence, writings, sketchbooks, five diaries, two photograph albums and photographs, and one scrapbook. Correspondents include family members, Witter Bynner, Ann and Eric Gugler, Leon Kroll, Isabel Manship, James Johnson Sweeney, Maxfield Parrish and others. An unprocessed addition to the collection dating 1942 includes a one page letter mounted on board from Maxfield Parrish to Barry Faulkner.
Scope and Content Note:
The papers of muralist, painter, and teacher Barry Faulkner measure 2.82 linear feet and date from circa 1858-1973. Faulkner's career; his relationships with family, friends, and fellow-artists; and his thoughts on art and artists are documented in biographical materials, correspondence, writings, sketchbooks, five diaries, photograph albums and photographs, and one scrapbook. An unprocessed addition to the collection dating 1942 includes a one page letter mounted on board from Maxfield Parrish to Barry Faulkner.

Biographical materials include biographical sketches, awards, and records documenting Faulkner's military service. Also found are a list of medications, a list of Faulkner's writings, party guest lists, an address book, a calendar, and materials related to the posthumous publication of Sketches From an Artist's Life. Of special interest are oversized architectural drawings by Eric Gugler for Faulkner's Keene, New Hampshire house.

Correspondence includes letters from Faulkner's friends, family, fellow artists, and art organizations and institutions. Faulkner's correspondence with his parents document his 1900-1901 trip to Italy with the Thayer family. Of special interest is his correspondence with writer Witter Bynner about Faulkner's daily life in New Hampshire, his travels through Europe, his artistic practice and career, Bynner's writings, his opinions on artistic and literary works, and his service in World War One. Many of the letters to Bynner include sketches by Faulkner of Abbott Handerson Thayer, Rockwell Kent, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Homer Saint-Gaudens, George de Forest Brush, Kahlil Gibran, and Mark Twain. Additional correspondents include sculptor Frances Grimes, architect Eric Gugler, painter Leon Kroll, and museum director James Johnson Sweeney.

Faulkner's writings are about art, artists, and the New Hampshire art community. Found are essays on Gifford Beal, George de Forest Brush, James Earle Fraser, Harriet Hosmer, Paul Manship, Charles Adams Platt, Hiram Powers, Edward Willis Redfield, Joseph Lindon Smith, Mary Lawrence Tonetti, Mark Twain, Lawrence Grant White, and Mahonri Young. Other writings discuss Faulkner's mural commissions, various aspects of New Hampshire history, and the history of the Dublin and Cornish art colonies whose inhabitants included George de Forest Brush, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and Abbott Handerson Thayer. Of special interest is a manuscript for Faulkner's posthumously published memoir Sketches From an Artist's Life, and an unpublished manuscript titled A Neighborhood of Artists about the history and culture of the Connecticut River Valley.

Four sketchbooks by Faulkner contain drawings of landscapes, city scenes, architecture, people, nature, and studies of artwork by others. Also found are two loose sketches.

Five diaries document Faulkner's 1922-1924 trip through Europe, Africa, and Asia including stops in France, Italy, Egypt, and Turkey. Diaries record Faulkner's thoughts on architecture, tourist sites, and travel amenities. Found is one diary from 1956 that discusses social events, the Saint-Gaudens Memorial, the MacDowell Colony of artists, and various artists including Gifford Beal, Maxfield Parrish, Paul Manship, and Eric Gugler.

The bulk of printed material consists of clippings which document published writings by Faulkner, obituaries and published rememberances of Faulkner, local events in Keene, New Hampshire, and reproductions of Faulkner's artwork. Also found are exhibition catalogs of other artists, an announcement of Faulklner's death from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a publication illustrated with reproductions of Faulkner's murals for the National Archives.

Photographs include formal and informal images of Faulkner throughout his life, and photographs of his family and friends, his studio, and reproductions of his artwork. Also included are two photograph albums, one of which contains photographs of Faulkner during his youth and one that contains photographs primarily from the 1930s of Faulkner's Keene, New Hampshire house, himself, and his friends and family.

The collection also includes a scrapbook prepared for Faulkner's seventieth birthday containing photographs, cards, telegrams, and placecards with hand drawn illustrations which show the "taste and characteristics" of Faulkner.

Biographical Note:
Francis Barrett Faulkner was born on July 12, 1881 in Keene, New Hampshire. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and went on to study at Harvard College. Around this same time, Faulkner began an apprenticeship with his cousin and painter Abbott Handerson Thayer and painter George de Forest Brush. He also met sculptors James Earle Fraser and Augustus Saint-Gaudens, both of whom became Faulkner's lifelong friends.

In 1901, Faulkner traveled to Italy for the first time with Thayer and his family. He returned to New York in 1902 and studied at the Art Students League and Chase School. He also completed illustration work for Century magazine.

In 1907, Faulkner won the Rome Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome. shortly thereafter, he left to study in Italy for three years, studying with George de Forest Brush and befriending sculptor Paul Manship. Upon his return in 1910, he started working on his first mural, commissioned by the wife of railroad executive E.H. Harriman. Having found his niche, Faulkner continued taking mural commissions until his career was interrupted by World War I and his service in the camouflage section of the army. Shortly after the war, he completed a mural for the marine headquarters in Quantico, Virginia.

Between 1923-1924, Faulkner worked in collaboration with Eric Gugler and Paul Manship to create the American Academy in Rome war memorial. Also following the war, Faulkner completed murals for the Eastman School of Music in 1922, the Rockefeller Center in 1932, and the National Archives in 1936. That same year, Faulkner bought and refurbished a house named "The Bounty" in Keene, New Hampshire, and built a studio nearby. In 1930, he was elected as a trustee of the American Academy in Rome.

During the 1940s, Faulkner created murals for numerous public buildings and sites around New Hampshire including the Senate Chambers in Concord, the Elliot Community Hospital, Keene National Bank, and the Cheshire County Savings Bank in Keene. During his final decades, Faulkner wrote an unpublished manuscript on the history of art in the Connecticut River Valley entitled A Neighborhood of Artists, and his posthumously published memoirs, Sketches of an Artist's Life. Faulkner died in 1966, in Keene, New Hampshire.

Summary:
Irving Berlin was a 20th century American composer and songwriter. This collection has sheet music for over 200 songs composed by Irving Berlin, as well as a sheet music by other composers. In addition to sheet music, there is correspondence, awards, photographs, and posters pertaining to Irving Berlin.
Scope and Contents:
The collection consists primarily of sheet music for over 200 songs composed by Irving Berlin, as well as sheet music by others, published before 1925. Additionally, there are awards, photographs, correspondence and posters relating to Irving Berlin.

Series 1, Sheet Music by Irving Berlin, circa 1907-1966,and undated, contains sheet music from musicals and films written by Irving Berlin. These are alphabetized by song title.

Series 2, Miscellaneous Sheet Music, 1905-1925, contains a miscellaneous assortment of sheet music from the early 1900s by various composers and lyricists, including two pieces by Irving Berlin. The series is arranged alphabetical by song title. Key: (L) indicates "Lyrics", (W) indicates "Words" and (M) indicates "Music" after composer's name(s).

Series 3, Awards, 1938-1987 and undated, contains awards to Berlin from schools, cities and professional musicians' associations. The earliest in the collection is August 1938, the Box Office Ribbon Award for the best picture of the month, "Alexander's Ragtime Band." The latest one is an accolade by the United States Senate, duly noted in the Congressional Record of October 30, 1987. Series 4 contains correspondence related to the awards.

Series 4, Correspondence, Photographs, and Posters, 1916-1980s and undated, contains correspondence, photographs, and posters. Also included are many large copy prints of Irving Berlin paintings, almost all of which are portraits or still lifes. Some date from the 1970s and 1980s. Nearly all are either signed or initialed. Photographs include Irving Berlin and one of his pianos. A document folio contains photographs of a number of canceled envelopes and a composition manuscript, "I Am Just a Dreaming Fool." There are several posters relating to Irving Berlin musicals.

The collection is arranged into four series.

Biographical / Historical:
Irving Berlin, composer of about 1,500 popular songs, a number of stage musicals and film scores, was born in Russia on May 11, 1888. Named Israel by his parents, Moses and Leah Baline, he fled to the United States with them in 1893. Upon arrival he adopted his American name, and the family settled on the lower east side of New York City. Irving attended public school there for two years, but dropped out to work and help support his family.

In 1907 while employed as a waiter in New York's Chinatown, Irving Berlin wrote his first song, "Marie from Southern Italy". A year later he was employed as a lyricist by a music publishing house and soon was a partner in the company, Waterson, Berlin and Snyder. In 1910 Irving Berlin wrote "My Wife's Gone to the Country" and "Call Me Up Some Rainy Afternoon". These launched his career as a world famous composer of popular songs and in 1911 "Alexander's Ragtime Band" was a sensational hit. It was this song, along with the others he made at this time, that many consider the advent of Modernism within the musical field.

During World War I, Irving Berlin was stationed at Camp Upton, Long Island, where he wrote patriotic songs, including an all-soldier musical revue and the song "God Bless America" (this was not released until twenty years later). After the war he established his own music publishing company in New York City, Irving Berlin Inc. In 1921 he partnered with Sam Harris and and built the Music Box Theater.

Irving Berlin was married twice. The first marriage in 1912 was to Dorothy Goetz, who died shortly afterward. In 1926 he married Ellin Mackay, the daughter of C. H. Mackay, chairman of the board of Postal Telegraph Cable Company. They had four children: Mary Ellin Barret, Elizabeth Irving Peters, Linda Louise Emmet, and little Irving, who died in infancy.

During World War II, Mr. Berlin toured the United States and the European and Pacific battle zones. Proceeds from these appearances were assigned to the Army Emergency Relief and other service agencies. He was the recipient of the Medal of Merit, the Congressional Gold Medal, and the President's Medal of Freedom and was a member of the Legion of Honor of France.

After the war, Berlin continued to write songs, scores, and musicals. It was during these decades that the score for the movie "White Christmas" and the play "Annie Get Your Gun" were produced. He took up painting as a hobby later in life. He died on September 22, 1989 at the age of 101. He is buried at Woodlawn Cemetary, the Bronx, New York City.
