Scope and Contents:
A series of scrapbooks compiled by Card on late 19th and early 20th century illustrators and cartoonists, each containing illustrations and political cartoons from magazines, newspapers, and books, together with lists of illustrations, and in some cases critical and biographical articles. Most of the reproductions are from Harper's Weekly and Monthly, Scribner's, and Century. Illustrators represented are Edwin Austin Abbey (2 v., 1871-1929, reel N68-17), Arthur B. Frost (4 v., 1874-1924, reel N68-18), Arthur I. Keller (3 v., 1886-1924, reel N68-23), Edward W. Kemble (6 v., 1880-1919, reels N68-24 & 25), Charles Stanley Reinhart (3 v., 1870-1897, reel N68-31), Frederic Remington (5 v., 1886-1938, reel N68-26), and William Thomas Smedley (1 v., 1880-1910, reel N68-32).

Typescript of Shelton's unpublished autobiography, in which he writes of his boyhood in New York and his experiences in the Civil War. Shelton also describes his career as an artist-illustrator in New York City, beginning in 1871, work for LESLIE'S, HARPER'S, CENTURY, and the NEW YORK LEDGER, how engraving was done, the beginning of the artists' colony at Cold Spring Harbor with Stanley Reinhart, Arthur Quartley, and others, the work of Frank Smith, the colony at East Hampton, and recollections of the Tile Club and the Salmagundi Club.

34 drawings by Charles Reinhart done in pencil, pen, white chalk and gouache. They are chiefly of figures but also include a few landscape sketches. Inscriptions were added by Margaret Mellor Risk ("Auntie Peg"), great niece of the artist. Also included is a sketchbook by Reinhart drawn while in Paris which contains quick sketches, notes on paintings, and notes of sources of historic costumes. The other sketchbook is by Edwin A. Abbey and is signed, "Edwin A. Abbey, New York, exchanged with C.S. Reinhart." This sketchbook, too, contains sketches from Paris and was apparently traded for Reinhart's own Paris sketchbook.

Provenance:
Margaret Mellor Risk, great niece of the artist, gave these drawings to her sister, Laura Gault McKean. Mrs. McKean divided them among her three children: Robert Mellor Gault, Louise Mellor Gault, and another son. Louise gave her share to her brother, Robert, who lent this collection for filming. He is a great-great nephew of the artist.
