Scope and Contents:
Writings consist of notes and poetry, as well as drafts of short stories, essays and novels. Most of the notebooks are untitled and contain Anne Ryan's recipes and thoughts on various subjects. The leather, pottery, tiles and woodcuts notebooks are dedicated to her artwork and include price lists, information on materials, and instructions about how to make certain kinds of objects. The bulk of the series consists of handwritten and typescript drafts of the book The Boyhood of Junipero Serra; her novel Raquel, listed here under its working title One Life, Raquel!; and numerous short stories and essays about her travels abroad, mostly in Spain. There are a few items written by others. Most of the material is undated, so date ranges are approximate.
Arrangement:
Notebooks are at the start of the series, followed by drafts of writings arranged alphabetically by title. Miscellaneous notes and untitled drafts are grouped together next. Writings by others are at the end of the series.

Writings and notes are largely on art theory and the technical aspects of creating pottery, such as glazing and kiln notes detailing recipes for glazes. A notebook from the 1950s includes travel expenses and notes about Midwest and Great Lakes museums from Turner's early job search trip.

Andreson's writings consist of artist's statements, notes on ceramic history and glaze formulas, and a sabbatical report that details her travels to Europe, East and North Africa, and Asia to study ceramics in 1966 and 1967. Nine notebooks contain glaze formulas and clay recipes that are often identified by the names of other ceramicists such as Adriane Saxe, Vivka Heino, Bernard Leach, Daniel Rhodes, Antonio Prieto, and others.
