This accession consists of records documenting the research of J. (Jonathan) D. Ballou, Population Manager and a conservation geneticist. Animals documented in this
research include Bali mynahs, grizzly bears, oryxes, tamarins, maned wolves, cheetahs, ibex, California condors, small-clawed otters, tigers, Przewalski's horses, black palm
cockatoos, black rhinoceroses, wildebeests (gnus), pygmy hippopotamuses, elephant shrews, sables, elephants, marmosets, orangutans, greater galagos, Guam rails, red pandas,
Micronesian kingfishers, giant pandas, and white-faced sakis. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, reports, reproductive data, data analysis programs, notes, audiotapes,
videotapes, and related materials. Some materials are in electronic format, including punch cards. Some materials were created by predecessor offices, including the Office
of Animal Management (through 1979), the Office of Animal Programs (1979-1984), and the Department of Zoological Research and Education (1984-1985).

Descriptive Entry:
This accession consists of records documenting the behavior of individual animals, care of animals, breeding, and significant events among the Nile hippopotamus, pygmy
hippopotamus, rhinoceros, giraffes, bison, potbellied pigs, elephants, camels, beavers, seals, sea lions, cheetahs, and other animals living in the Elephant House, deer area,
prairie trail, Africa trail, Cheetah Conservation Station, and Beaver Valley. Materials consist of observations and notes by the keepers in the form of daily report as well
as some diet information, medical information, facility information, and clippings about the animals.

This accession consists of records documenting responses to issues and crises in the news media related to the National Zoological Park. These records document a particularly
active period of high-profile animal deaths and investigations by several regulatory bodies and news agencies. Species documented in this accession include elephants, cheetahs,
giraffes, gorillas, orangutans, red pandas, seals, prairie dogs, bears, zebras, pandas, pygmy hippopotami, and tigers. Materials include copies of articles, text to be posted
on the website, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and responses, copies of animal medical records, copies of regulations, copies of reports by various outside agencies,
letters of complaint received from the public, letters to the editor written by zoo staff, transcripts of interviews with zoo staff, files related to employee morale, formal
correspondence and email with reporters, and memoranda and email among zoo staff and between zoo staff and Smithsonian Institution, Office of Public Affairs staff.
