Summary:
The Ninety-Nines, Inc. History Books Collection consists of scrapbooks (yearbooks) complied by the officers of the Ninety-Nines to document the organization. Included in the yearbooks are the following: photographs of the members and officers; news clippings of the organization, individual chapters and sections, and about individual members; programs from air races, including Air Race Classic, Angel Derby, and the Powder Puff Derby; minutes from the annual meetings; and newsletters of the organization, The 99news, Ninety-Nine News, and Ninety-niner.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of 19 bound scrapbooks and 34 unbound scrapbooks chronicling the history of the Ninety-Nines. Some of the volumes are described with a date range (September 1, 1937 -- September 1, 1938), while others are described with a volume number and date range (Volume 28, 1956 -- 1957). Organization of the Ninety-Nines History Books varies somewhat over the years. Usually, the books begin with photographs of the officers of the national organization, followed by minutes and a program from the annual meeting. The books end with copies of The Ninety-Nines Newsletters from the previous year. Additional contents of each book are dependent upon the events that happened in a particular year. In the early years of the organization, the books include further refinements of the constitution and by-laws, and various newspaper and magazine articles regarding accomplishments of the organization or individual members. In subsequent years, the history books focus more on the air races in which members participated or various events sponsored by the organization.

The researcher will note that in 1953 volume numbers were assigned to the books. For the sake of continuity and clarity in the finding aid, the processing archivist assigned volume numbers where appropriate. These numbers appear in square brackets where appropriate, i.e. [35]. Due to the fragile nature of the bound scrapbooks, photocopying may not be possible.
Arrangement:
The Ninety-Nines, Inc. History Books Collection is arranged chronologically, by date and/or volume number.
Biographical/Historical note:
On November 2, 1929, twenty-six licensed women pilots gathered together at Curtiss Field, Valley Stream, Long Island, New York, to discuss the formation of a club "to promote women pilots among themselves, and to encourage other women to fly, as well as to break down general opposition to aviation." (1) After that first meeting, letters were sent out to the 117 licensed women pilots in the United States, giving all of them the opportunity to become charter members in the new club. The name of the club was to be determined by the number of women who wished to join. When 99 letters were returned by the approved date, the club became known as The Ninety-Nines. Many famous female pilots of the time, including Amelia Earhart, Ruth Elder, Viola Gentry, Phoebe Omlie, and Louise Thaden were charter members.

In the succeeding years, The Ninety-Nines have ably fulfilled the purpose set forth in the original letter. Many aviation records have been set by members of The Ninety-Nines. Amelia Earhart was the first woman to pilot an aircraft across the Atlantic and, in 1936, Louise Thaden and Blanche Noyes won the Bendix Trophy Race. Since 1941, the organization has bestowed a variety of scholarships and grants to members who are seeking advanced training in specialized branches of aviation. Today, the Ninety-Nines, Inc. has grown to include 6,500 members in 35 countries.

Date:
1929-1931
Summary:
This single-item collection consists of a business card created from a photograph and used by exhibition pilot Frederick Melvin "Freddie" Lund, circa 1930. The card is autographed by Lund, air race pilot Mary "May" Haizlip, and A. E. Merriam.
Scope and Contents:
This single-item collection consists of a business card used by exhibition pilot Frederick Melville "Freddie" Lund, circa 1930. The card is in the form of a brown-toned black and white print photograph trimmed to 2 x 7 inches and folded in half to form a 2 x 3.5 inch business card. Front reads, "Freddie Lund; Exhibition Flying, Acrobatic Instructions, P. O. Box 296, Troy, Ohio." Card opens to show (on right half) two vignetted views: an aerial view of an inverted biplane in flight, and a full-length view of Lund posing in his heavy leather flight suit in front of his biplane (possibly a Waco Model 10). Right side has inscription "Best Wishes To Bill From Freddie Lund." Back of card is signed by air race pilot Mary "May" Haizlip, the second woman in the United States to receive her commercial pilot's license and an impressive competitor in air races, including the Powder Puff Derby; and Wichita-based pilot A. E. Merriam, who served as the National Aeronautics Association (NAA) governor for Kansas in 1929.
Arrangement:
No arrangement.
Biographical / Historical:
Frederick Melville "Freddie" Lund was born in Minnesota in 1897. In 1913, he enlisted and became a member of the 4th Pursuit Squadron at Toul, France. Following World War I and a difficult battle against tuberculosis, Lund joined the Gates Flying Circus. As an exhibition or "stunt" pilot, Lund earned the nicknames "Fearless Freddie" and "The Man Without Nerves." When flying circuses began to wane in popularity, Lund became a test pilot for the Waco Aircraft Company. In 1929 he married fellow exhibition pilot Elizabeth Leeanne "Bettie" (Elkins) Lund. He completed the first outside loop using a commercial plane and became World Aerobatic Champion in 1930. Lund died on October 3, 1931, near Lexington, Kentucky, as a result of a mid air collision. Lund was inducted into the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame in 1991.

Biographical / Historical:
Walter Beech, along with Clyde Cessna and Lloyd Stearman, founded the Travel Air Manufacturing Company in Wichita, Kansas in 1925. Travel Air was known for producing highly successful racing aircraft and several entrants in the 1929 Women's Air Derby flew Travel Airs, including the winner Louise Thaden. Shortly after Travel Air merged with Curtiss-Wright Corporation in 1929, Walter Beech left the larger company and founded Beech Aircraft Corporation with his wife Olive Ann Beech and three others in Wichita in 1932. The first aircraft produced by the company was the Beech 17 Staggerwing, designed to be a personal aircraft faster than military craft. Olive Ann Beech proposed that Beech Aircraft could increase sales of the aircraft by sponsoring a woman pilot, Louise Thaden with Blanche Noyes acting as co-pilot, to fly the Staggerwing in the 1936 Bendix Trophy Race. Thaden and Noyes won. Beech Aircraft continued to produce numerous successful civilian and military aircraft, and support women pilots, and Olive Ann Beech played an integral role in the company. In 1950, after the death of Walter Beech, she was named president of the company and remained in that role until Beech Aircraft was purchased by Raytheon in 1980 at which time she became a member of Raytheon's board of directors.
