Photographs
Place:
New York (State) -- Poosepatuck Reservation
Date:
Jun 9 1912
Scope and Contents:
Taken from south side of Poosepatuck Creek looking north towards Indian settlement. At right: Forge River. Information from Dr Frances Harper, 11/30/62.
Local Numbers:
OPPS NEG.49395
Local Note:
Original Number 215. Mounted below the photograph in the album were two clippings from unidentified newspapers, as follows: June Meeting at Poosepatuck. Mastic, June 10. 1912. [Year added in ink.] --June meeting day at the Poosepatuck Indian Reservation was observed yesterday and while the old time excitement and carousel is no more, the meet is yet enjoyed by scores of descendants of the Indian tribes of eastern Long Island, and many whites visit the grounds to witness the gathering and listen to the singing of the negro-Indians of Poosepatuck, Shinnecock and Setauket.
[Undated clipping.] June meeting passed off quietly this year. There were more white people in evidence than colored, in proportion. A family of pure Indians from Flushing were among those who came to visit relatives. Sermons were preached both in the morning and afternoon by Rev. W. H. Lacy, of Brooklyn. The music was led by James Waters, of the New York Post Office, as organist.
