Scope and Contents:
Commercial paper writing tablet containing Bretz's notes on photograph by flash in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. Cover: "The Palmetto Tablet No. 4 / permanently bound, / ruled and perforated," sold "From Sykes & Rice, Commercial and School Supplies a Specialty. Pottsville, Pa." "Keystone Handy Pencil Tablet" on verso. Contains eight leaves, some torn out. Bretz's "photo artist" blind-stamp at bottom of first page. Note on second page regarding "photographs of Kohinoor Mine interior by Electric Light." Bretz describes his camera, lens, plates, exposure times, etc. The notes appear to have been made in response to a request for an article about Bretz's work.
Biographical / Historical:
Bretz photographed throughout the northern and western portions of Pennsylvania, particularly in the coal mining regions around Pottsville and State College.
