Ellen Shipman Garden Photography Collection

Landscape architect:
Shipman, Ellen Biddle, 1869-1950  Search this
Extent:
0.48 Cubic feet (3 boxes, film negatives, glass plate negatives, glass lantern slides, and autochromes)
Type:
Collection descriptions
Archival materials
Date:
circa 1903-1950
Content Description:
The Ellen Shipman Garden Photography Collection consists of (350) film and glass plate negatives, glass lantern slides, and autochromes that document over fifty gardens designed by landscape architect Ellen Shipman. The negatives copy photographs and plans from Shipman's office and are not the original 'masters.'
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged geographically by state, according to the location of the garden.
Biographical / Historical:
Ellen (Biddle) Shipman (1869-1950) was a pioneering landscape architect who designed hundreds of gardens throughout the United States from the late 1910s thoughout the 1940s. She was mentored by architect and landscape architect Charles A Platt and gained professional experience in his office. Shipman made a point of hiring women to work in her Manhattan office. Most of her commissions were for private clients, though she did design several public spaces including school campuses, library grounds, and memorials.
General:
About half of the negatives were originally housed in paper sleeves, most of which were labelled with the client name. The rest were in unlabelled boxes and account for most of the unidentified gardens in the collection. None of the photographic images were captioned or dated; the garden plans specify the client and location.
Cataloging of the Ellen Shipman Garden Photography Collection was made possible with support from the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative.
Related Materials:
Cornell University Library's Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections includes the Ellen McGowan Biddle Shipman papers, 1914-1946, Collection Number 1259.
Provenance:
Taylor Belcher, III and Anthony W. Belcher donated the collection to the Archives of American Gardens in 2021.

General:
In 1926, Mrs. Russell A. Alger, Jr. commissioned Ellen Shipman to design the gardens for Starboard Cottage in York Harbor, Maine. Shipman collaborated with Mrs. Alger years earlier on the Moorings and later on another home, both in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Starboard Cottage was the summer home of the Algers, and Shipman designed the gardens with this in mind. This vacation garden was nestled into the rocky hillside, out-of-sight from the house and contained within a picket fence, creating a world of its own. The oval garden was planted with trees, shrubs, and the beds were full of seed-packet summer garden flowers mixed with hardy heather. The colorful blooms of annuals, biennials, and perennials created a painterly composition. A small seating area with an uninterrupted view of the seas completed the escape. Dirt paths edged with stone meandered from the overlook area, through the flower beds, and wound back down the hill to the summer cottage. Persons Associated: Mrs. Russell A. Alger, Jr. (former owners); Ellen Biddle Shipman (landscape architect); William Platt (architect).

Halfred Farms (Chagrin Falls, Ohio)
Date:
circa 1919-1950
General:
In 1919 Ellen Shipman was commissioned by Windsor T. White to design the gardens for Halfred Farms in Chagrin Falls, a small village outside of Cleveland, Ohio. The project continued into the early 1920's, during which time Shipman developed a close relationship with Mr. and Mrs. White and lead to further commissions from their relatives and friends, as well as a generous grant to her scholarship fund at Lowethorpe School of Landscape Architecture. Shipman's firm created planting and construction plans for the grounds, gardens, and additional architecture. Warren H. Manning oversaw the general layout of the plans for the grounds and gardens, and Bly Myers oversaw the planting. Halfred Farms had been the home to a thriving apple business, and included several orchards, farm buildings, and a farmhouse built in the 1860's, as well as a guest house built by Bryant Flemming for the Whites. Taking all of this into account, Shipman's design nestled ornamental garden areas close to the house and complex of farm buildings. Next to the house were terraces with a lawn space, formal garden, flower garden, and a walled, iris garden with an oval pool at the center reached by flagstone steps. Among the architectural features supplied were a stone bridge (destroyed in 1994), ornamental gate, walls, fences, seating, water features, and bathing pavilion. Additional designs for the grounds included plantings around buildings, new entrance road, driveway, and a winding road leading to the apple orchard and meadows. Typical of Shipman's style, lush, naturalistic border plantings throughout the gardens and grounds created a seamless transition with the surrounding landscape. Surviving features of Shipman's design for Halfred Farms include Chinese Chippendale architecture, fences, gates, the pool house, and some of the original trees and shrubs. Persons Associated: Windor T. White (former owners); Clara M. Rankin (owner); Ellen Biddle Shipman (landscape architect); Warren H. Manning (landscape architect); Geoffrey Platt (architect); Bryant Fleming (architect).

Summary:
This collection contains 276 photographs and documents that were collected by Episcopal missionary and teacher Ida Roff Fick working in Anadarko, Oklahoma Territory circa 1898-1902. Most of the photographs are believed to have been taken by amateur photogarapher Annette Ross Hume (1858-1933).
Scope and Contents:

This collection contains 276 photographs and documents that were collected by Episcopal missionary and teacher Ida Roff Fick working in Anadarko, Oklahoma Territory circa 1898-1902.

The photographs depict scenes in Oklahoma Territory, primary Anadarko region and features portraits of Wichita, Kiowa, Niuam (Comanche), Oklahoma Delaware people; daily activities; reservation schools; beef issues; leisure such as games. The bulk of the photographs depict the land allotment registration and auction process in 1901 when "surplus" lands were open to non-Indian settlers and the establishment of Anadarko town.

It is unclear if Ida Roff Fick only collected the photographs or if she photographed some of them herself. It is believed that most of the photos were likely photographed by Annette Ross Hume, with whom Ida Roff boarded with until her marriage in 1902. A handful of photographs in this collection are also attributed to other photographers including George Addison, Russell and Miller Co, and William E. Irwin, among others.

The paper materials in this collection include correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and notes, circa 1897-1955.
Arrangement:
Arranged by catalog number.
Biographical / Historical:
Ida Roff was born in New York City on May 3, 1868. In the late 1880s, Ida Roff Fick graduated from Hunter Normal School and then traveled to Oklahoma Territory to work as a missionary and Sunday school teacher. She also taught the art of lace making to the Native women she worked with as part of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church. She boarded with Annette Ross Hume (1858-1933) On Dec. 18, 1902, Ida Roff married Henry L. H. Fick. Ida Roff Rick died on February 16, 1960.

The biography of Annette Ross Hume below is from the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma history and culture on the Oklahoma History Society website.

"Annette Ross Hume, Amateur photographer and clubwoman Annette Ross Hume, daughter of James and Catherine Darling Ross, was born on March 8, 1858, in Perrysburg, Ohio. Annette Ross married Dr. Charles R. Hume on December 27, 1876, and in 1890 they moved to Anadarko, where Dr. Hume was agency physician for the Kiowa, Comanche, and Wichita. Of five children, two sons survived, Carleton Ross and Raymond Robinson.

In the late 1800s, with the advent of light-weight cameras and less toxic chemicals, middle-class women enjoyed photography as a hobby. For twenty years beginning in 1891 Annette Hume photographed American Indians (including Geronimo and Quanah Parker) living near the agency as well as the settling of Anadarko after the land lottery in 1901. Her photographs, numbering more than seven hundred, add imagery to history as Oklahoma Territory transformed from reservations to towns and farm communities.

Before her death on January 19, 1933, in Minco, Oklahoma, Hume, a Presbyterian, was president of the Women's Territorial Synodical Society. Inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1930, she was a charter member of the Anadarko Philomathic Club, organized in 1899, and had served as president of the Oklahoma Federation of Women's Clubs from 1913 to 1915. She wrote An Historical Sketch of the Federation of Women's Clubs of Oklahoma and Indian Territories, 1898–1908, published at Anadarko in 1908."

Scope and Contents:
Subseries 4.1 includes black and white silver gelatin negatives. The majority of the negatives, not all, have been scanned.
Arrangement note:
The negatives are not arranged in a clear order, and the negatives document clients and subjects. Researchers will need to look in two different box sizes for negatives of different sizes that were originally housed together in freezer boxes but are now housed separately according to size. A number of freezer boxes are missing, this is the reason for box number gaps, and contain varying numbers of negatives. The physical number of boxes was condensed during rehousing but the original freezer box numbers were retained in combination on the new boxes. The beginning and end of a freezer box are indicated inside the new box by blue dividers.
