The papers of painter, author, and arts administrator Lee Hall measure 7.4 linear feet and date from circa 1870-2017, bulk 1975 to 2010. The papers document Hall's career through biographical material, correspondence, writings, studio records, printed material, photographic material, and artwork. Included is significant documentation on Hall's book projects, including biographies of Betty Parsons, Abe Ajay, and Willem and Elaine de Kooning.

Biographical material includes business cards, résumé and biographical texts, travel documents, and awards. Correspondence is professional and personal in nature and includes some collected historic correspondence from unknown authors. Correspondence regarding specific writing projects is found in the Writings series. The Writings series includes journals and notebooks focusing primarily on Hall's travels and study of Classics including the Greek language. The Writing Projects subseries includes titles intended for publication as well as college papers, essays, and lectures. Published titles are often accompanied by book proposals, contracts, research material, interviews, and correspondence. Also included are writings by others including reviews regarding Hall's art career. Studio records include artwork inventories, loan paperwork, and the mechanical for an exhibition catalog. Printed material includes exhibition invitations for Lee Hall's art career, exhibition catalogs for Hall's exhibitions and that of Betty Parsons, and general printed material regarding Elaine de Kooning, as well as press clippings on various topics. Photographic materials include images of Lee Hall and her circle of friends including Betty Parsons, images of Hall in her studio, installation images of Hall's exhibitions at the Betty Parsons Gallery, and extensive photographs of Hall's travels to the Mediterranean, primarily to Greece and Turkey. The Artwork series includes sketches, watercolors and other small paintings by Lee, as well as illustrated manuscripts for children's book titles.

Biographical / Historical:
Lee Hall (1935-2017) was a painter, author, and arts administrator who served as president of the Rhode Island School of Design from 1975-1983. Born in Lexington, North Carolina and raised in Florida following her parents' divorce, Lee Hall later returned to her birth state to attend the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. She received her bachelor of fine arts in 1955, studying under the abstract painter John Opper. She eventually earned a masters degree in art education and a PhD in creative arts, both from New York University. Hall's paintings shared an Abstract Expressionist sensibility common with many of her peers at the Betty Parsons Gallery, imparted on the figurative tradition of landscape painting. Hall showed her paintings at the Betty Parsons Gallery from the late seventies until 1982 when the gallery closed following Parsons' death, after which she ceased exhibiting her work almost entirely until the last decade of her life. Hall maintained a studio at her home in South Hadley, Massachusetts throughout her life. A few years before Parson's death Hall had agreed to write Parsons' biography, finally released in 1991, on the condition that she and papers were made available for intensive research. Hall published titles on a wide variety of subjects including a comprehensive survey of American clothing (1992), and perhaps most notably the controversial biography of painters Elaine and Willem de Kooning (1993).
Separated Materials:
Three linear feet of Betty Parsons papers donated as part of the Lee Hall papers were transferred to the collection of Betty Parsons Gallery records and personal papers, also located at the Archives of American Art.

Donated in 2018 by the Lee Hall Estate via Carolyn Crozier and Deborah Jacobson, co-executors.

Summary:
The Sylvia Lark papers measure 1.4 linear feet and date from 1971- 1994, documenting Lark's career as an abstract artist and college professor, particularly her tenure at the University of California, Berkeley. Included are biographical materials; correspondence with museums, galleries, universities, colleagues and other artists; writings by and about Lark's work; professional files such as gallery represented sale records, grant applications and inventory lists; exhibition files; teaching files; printed and photographic material.
Scope and Contents:
The Sylvia Lark papers measure 1.4 linear feet and date from 1971-1994, documenting Lark's career as an abstract artist and college professor, particularly her tenure at the University of California, Berkeley. Included are biographic material, such as resumes, an interview transcript and an award certificate from the College Art Association of America; correspondence between Lark and galleries, city art departments, Native American organizations and other artists, and colleagues regarding various exhibitions and teaching employment opportunities. Also found are writings by and about Lark's work, exhibition files which document select solo and group exhibitions that Lark participated in, as well as tribute exhibition. Professional files include materials documenting Lark's involvement serving as a juror for various exhibitions, her membership and participation in professional organizations and financial records related to the selling and loaning of her artwork. Teaching files include student evaluations, course schedules, U.C. Berkley employment documents, correspondence and reports regarding Lark's tenure case, U.C. Berkley personel informational paperwork, Faculty grant and fellowship documents and sabbatical leave applications and awards. Printed material primarily consists of newspaper and magazine clippings reviewing Lark's exhibitions along with exhibition announcements, flyers and catalogs. Photographs are of Lark's artwork as well as her Fulbright travels in Korea and Japan.

Biographical / Historical:
Sylvia Lark (1947-1990) was a Seneca abstract expressionist painter, printmaker and educator from Buffalo, New York. Lark received her M.F.A from University of Wisconsin, Madision in 1972 before moving to California where she began teaching printmaking at California State University, Sacramento. In 1977 she received a Fulbright grant to travel and study in Korea and Japan. She also began teaching at the University of California, Berkeley that same year where she remained a professor for the rest of her life. She was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award for teaching art by the College Art Association posthumously in 1991.

In addition to her professorial career, Lark was a widely exhibited artist who collaborated on a number of Native American exhibitions, and served as a member of a different women in the arts organizations. Her work can be found in numerous collections including that of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

Biographical / Historical:
Sculptor Nina Winkel (1905-1990) was active in New York City, New York and is known for small sculptures of the figure, including religious pieces, and animal sculptures, in a variety of mediums.

Born in Borken, Germany, Winkel studied sculpture at the Staedel Institute in Frankfurt/Main and in Paris from 1923 to 1941. She came to the United States in 1942, becoming a citizen in 1945, during which time she taught at the servicemen's canteen of the Sculpture Center. Winkel served as president of the Sculpture Center from 1970-1973. She is also known for her research on antique and Byzantine mosaics, becoming an outside reader at the Institute of Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks.

Scope and Contents:
Biographical material consists of a medal designed by Winkel for the Society of Medalists, resumes, and an award. Correspondence, primarily with colleagues, institutions, and patrons, concerns Winkel's work. Correspondents include the Architectural League of New York, Bruno Bearzi, Dumbarton Oaks, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Academy of Design, National Sculpture Society, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia Art Alliance, and the University of Notre Dame. Personal business records include applications for travel research and financial records concerning the reproduction and sale of her work. Photographs show Winkel in her studio and her works of art. Printed materials consist of clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, and press releases. Writings and notes include a typescript of a travel journal kept during a trip to Europe and Asia Minor and general notes. Also found is a file regarding the operation of the Sculpture Center.

Sculptor and educator Arline Wingate (1906-1988) was active in East Hampton, New York. Wingate married Clifford Hollander and is sometimes known as Arline Wingate Hollander. Wingate studied at Smith College and the Art Students League and her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally.

Biographical / Historical:
Rosa Newman Walinska (1887-1953) was a sculptor and poet in New York City, New York. Born in Ukraine, Walinska settled in London as a child and and worked in the millinery trade to help support her family. She married Ossip Walinsky in 1906 and had two children. The Walinskys immigrated to the United States in 1915 where she began to experiment with sculpture and formally studied art in her 40s. By the time she was in her 50s, Walinksa was exhibiting her works in solo shows. She died in Manhattan in 1953.

Chicago, Illinois painter Idelle Weber (1932-2020) was known for her Pop art compositions of black silhouettes set against flat, brightly colored backgrounds. Weber was also associated with the Photorealist movement and her work was exhibited extensively in New York.

Biographical / Historical:
Sylvia Wald (1915-2011) was a sculptor and printmaker in New York City, New York. She worked as an art teacher with the Works Progress Administration and began to experiment with silkscreen techniques with oil paint. Later in her career, Wald worked in sculpture and assemblage. She exhibited her work in solo and group shows around the United States and with the Art in Embassies program through the U.S. Department of State.

Provenance:
Dyestuffs is a portion of the Business Ephemera Series of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Accession AC0060 purchased from Isadore Warshaw in 1967. Warshaw continued to accumulate similar material until his death, which was donated in 1971 by his widow, Augusta. For a period after acquisition, related materials from other sources (of mixed provenance) were added to the collection so there may be content produced or published after Warshaw's death in 1969. This practice has since ceased.

Biographical / Historical:
Evangeline "EJ" Montgomery (1930- ) is an African American artist, curator, and arts administrator in California and Washington, D.C.

Montgomery was born in New York and moved to Harlem in New York City after the divorce of her parents, Oliver and Carmelite Thompson. Upon graduating from Seward Park High School in 1951, Montgomery worked painting faces on dolls and statues. In 1955, she married Ulysses "Jim" Montgomery and moved to Los Angeles. In California she began working for jewelry designer Thomas Usher while attending Los Angeles City College. She continued her education at California College of the Arts (California College of Arts and Crafts) where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1969. During the late 1960s, Montgomery began curating exhibitions. From 1971 to 1976, she was curator for Rainbow Sign Gallery in Berkeley. Other roles Montgomery held were as the national exhibits workshop coordinator at the American Association for State and Local History and as program development consultant at the African American Museums Association. From 1976 to 1979, she was art commissioner for the city of San Francisco.

Montgomery moved to Washington, D.C. in 1980 to serve as the community affairs director for Howard University's WHMM-TV station. She then began working for the United States Information Agency (USIA) as a program officer in their Arts America program in the early 1980s. In her role, she worked to promote cross-cultural exchanges through art, specializing in American exhibitions touring abroad. Montgomery retired from the USIA in 2008.

As an artist, Montgomery gained recognition for her work in printmaking and metalworking. She was the recipient of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities fellowship in 2012 and an Excellence in the Arts Award from the Brandywine Print Workshop in 2004. Due to her diagnosis of Parkinson's disease in the 1990s, Montgomery had to stop working with metal but continued her printmaking work.

The Evangeline J. Montgomery papers were donated in 2019 by Evangeline J. Montgomery, as part of the Archives' African American Collecting Initiative funded by the Henry Luce Foundation.

The collection sheds light on the gallery's operations through administrative files and artist files. Administrative files include scant appraisal records, exhibition files, financial records, photographs, and printed material. Artists' files contain correspondence, photographs, contracts and agreements, loan records, price lists, mailing lists, writings, and more. Chaim Gross, Max Weber, Laura Ziegler, Raphael Sawyer, David Levine, Bruno Lucchesi, and Laura Shechter are among the many artists found in the collection.

Biographical / Historical:
Forum gallery was founded in New York City in 1961 by Bella Fishko. The gallery is well known for exhibiting the figuritive art of prominent U.S. artists. Raphael Soyer, Gregory Gillespie, David Levine, and Chaim Gross were among the first artists represented by the gallery. The gallery expanded to include international artists in the 1980s, and today represents more than 30 artists from the United States and Europe. Bella Fishko's son, Robert Fishko, took over the gallery's operations after Bella's death in 1995. The gallery is also a founding member of the Art Dealers Association of America, founded in 1962.
