Scope and Contents:
"Based on the different inscriptions in the building, the earliest part of the structure can be dated to early 15th century. The building however has extensive renovations from Safavid and Qajar period. The visible inscriptions in the photo dates to 1307 (1890), therefore the photograph must have been taken after this date. The inscription bears the name and signature of the artist, as welll as Nasir al-Din Shah's praises." [Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Archives, Curatorial Research Assistant]
- Handwritten number (inked, probably by Antoin Sevruguin) reads, "1267."
- Scratched handwritten number (inked, probably by Antoin Sevruguin) reads, "1264."
- Myron Bement Smith handwritten caption in English reads, "47.P; Box 15.12: Kazvim. mosque of Shah Sultan Hussein. Entrance (sent to Prof. Varjavand, U. of Tehran)." [Myron Bement Smith Collection, Subseries 2.1: Islamic Archives History, Collection Information; Box 60; Folder 44: 47 P: Antoine Sevruguin, glass negatives, Iran]
Arrangement:
According to Myron B. Smith handwritten document (Myron Bement Smith Collection, Subseries 2.1: Islamic Archives History, Collection Information; Box 60; Folder 44: 47 P Antoine Sevruguin, glass negatives, Iran), Antoin Sevruguin's 696 glass negatives, at the time of their acquisition, were arranged into 61 boxes without any apparent organization. Today they are housed in archival document boxes, essentially duplicating the original arrangement, and stored on shelves. This glass negative was included into "Box 15."
Biographical / Historical:
Antoin Sevruguin is one of the early pioneers of commercial photography in Iran. He arrived in Iran from Tbilisi, Georgia in the mid 1870s to set up shop in Ala al-Dawla street in Tehran. From the early days, Sevruguin's studio was trusted both by the Qajar court and by foreign visitors to Iran. Highly regarded for their artistic ingenuity outside Iran, Sevruguin's photographs of 'ethnic types,' architecture and landscape, and depictions of daily life of Tehran found their way into foreign travelogues, magazines and books. As such, he stands alone in a relatively large group of early Iranian photographers for being recognized and celebrated outside the boundaries of the country. Antoin Sevruguin passed away in 1933, leaving behind only a fraction of his large collection of glass negatives, which is currently in the Archives of the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.

"The cossack brigade was established in 1879, modelled after the Russian Cossack formations. The brigade remained under the rule of Russian officers well after the Russian revolution of 1917, with its first Iranian commander being Riza Khan (1920). The brigade - initially comprised of only 400 men and later expanded to accomodate the service of around 8000 -became increasingly identified with the royal police force, standing on the side of Qajar king of the time, Mohammad Ali Shah, during the constitutional revolution of 1908. The photo depicts the brigade in Tehran's Maydan-i Mashq. Maydan-i Mashq in Tehran was constructed during the reign of Fath Ali Shah Qajar and expanded and renovated during Nasir al-Din shah's reign and on the orders of Mirza Mohammad Khan Sipahsalar. Scope and Contents:
Two photographic platinum prints, signed by Steichen in pencil on the image, numbered in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse.
Biographical / Historical:
Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was an American painter and photographer born in Bivange, Luxembourg. He became a naturalized citizen in 1900. Steichen began his career as a fine art painter, but he soon took up the pictorialist approach to photography, going on to establish the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession with Alfred Stieglitz.

Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919) was an American railroad-car manufacturer from Detroit, Michigan who amassed a large fortune as one of the founders of the Peninsular Car Company, which would go on to become American Car and Foundry. In the latter part of the 19th century, Freer was diagnosed with neurasthenia, the prescribed treatment for which was usually rest and avoidance of stressful activities. Freer began collecting art, starting with American masters and impressionist painters. Early on, Freer met and began collecting the works of James Whistler, who advised him to start collecting Asian art. Freer traveled to China, Japan and Korea, amassing a large private collection. Early in the twentieth century, Freer decided to donate his art to the public; in 1916, construction began on what is now known as the Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution. The building, which was paid for by Freer, cost one million dollars. Completion was delayed by World War I and the gallery was not opened until 1923. Freer died in 1919, leaving the bulk of his art collection to the federal government. This photograph comes originally from the Estate of Clarence P. Freer, nephew of Charles Lang Freer.

Lantern slides
Date:
1890-1920
Summary:
Approximately 200 lantern slides, of various scenes in America and Canada, many of them published by railroad lines, presumably to arouse tourist interest in travel by rail. New York State and California are especially emphasized. Some images depict the railroads, railroad stations and railroad equipment. One group of images is from the Nabisco factory.
Scope and Contents note:
Approximately 200 glass lantern slides [exactly 214], of various scenes in America and Canada, many of them published by railroad lines, presumably to arouse tourist interest in travel by rail. Especially emphasized are New York State and California. Some slides feature the railroads and railroad equipment. Some of the slides are scenes from a cereal factory, showing the manufacture of shredded wheat.

Some slide makers are unidentified. Captions quoted are from labels on the slides, except that descriptions in brackets are supplied by the cataloguer.

Slide manufacturers include Chas. Beseler Co.,

The two original wooden storage boxes in which the slides were received are included. Slides shown in boxes 1-10 were originally stored in one wooden box, while those in boxes 11-20 were originally in the second wooden box.
Arrangement:
Collection is arranged into one series.
Provenance:
Immediate source of acquisition is unknown. Almost certainly transferred from one of the curatorial divisions, because it has an inventory tag (1980), predating the Archives Center's existence, but no other information is known.
