Scope and Contents:
Footage shot in the Mount Hagen region of highland New Guinea at Tari and Mendi. Documentation of musical performances includes chordophone and kurupwape (panpipe) players and a drum chorus near Tari. Preparations for a provincial sing-sing at Mendi include decoration and fitting of men's wigs. Groups seen performing at the sing-sing include Huli, Kurbu, Tari, and Mendi. Footage also includes shots in the market at Tari and aerial shots over the Hagen region.

Scope and Contents:
Subseries 1.1 Papua New Guinea, 1925-1996 and undated, comprises of materials related to the 1925-1927 American-Dutch Expedition to Papua New Guinea led by Matthew Stirling. This expedition was the first to use a hydroplane to explore the interior of Dutch New Guinea. Materials include field notes, journals, correspondence, photographs, reports, clippings, and ephemera.

Subseries 1.1.1 Field notes and other documents, includes accounting of expenses, timelines, maps, ethnographic notes, vocabularies, and weather reports in addition to various journals and journal compilations and copies by both Stirling and Stanley Hedberg. Subseries 1.1.2 Correspondence primarily includes letters from Matthew Stirling to his family and letters from Stanley Hedberg to Matthew and Mrs. Stirling (Matthew's mother). Letters deal with the expedition itself along with logistics for the ensuing film/lecture tour "By Aeroplane to Pygmyland." Subseries 1.1.3 Lecture tour, press, and miscellaneous items, contains more press and schedules for the lecture tour, in addition to other miscellaneous materials related to the New Guinea expedition including research materials and articles about the expedition from the 1970s. Subseries 1.1.4 Photographs, contains photographs from the expedition including travel to and from New Guinea.

Edited film produced by Bechtel Group of Companies was made in association with SONGS OF A DISTANT JUNGLE. As part of the filming, a number of traditional songs from Papua New Guinea were recorded in their entirety and assembled before editing of SONGS OF A DISTANT JUNGLE to create SONGS FROM PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Christopher Roberts, a musician from the Juilliard School who received a grant from the Bechtel Group to record traditional music of Papua New Guinea, is shown recording the songs. Locales and Songs include: Personal Lament, Men's Cult Initiation Song, Men's Joke Song, Women's Sorcery/Love Song, and Yong Women's Fantasy Song from Bultem Village, Ok Tedi Region, Western Province; Men's Cult House Song and Young People's Song from Tifalmin Village, West Sepik Province; and Women's Crying Song, Men's Crying Song, Kolapi Mingi played on a bamboo flute, Orope Mingi played on pan pipes, and Children's song from Kopiri Village, Ialibu, Southern Highlands Province.

Edited film documenting the inhabitants of Pere Village, Manus Province, Papua New Guinea. Honeyman, a colleague of Margaret Mead, has worked with the villagers since 1966. Film records Margaret Mead's last visit to Pere Village and includes Mead being welcomed by the villagers, sitting and reading while children play, visiting a school, and departing the village by boat. Film also includes scenes of villagers playing frisbee and whiffle ball and dancing.
