Scope and Contents:
Letters are from Thieme during his time in Europe to his wife Becky (Lillian Beckett Thieme) regarding family matters, and to business associates concerning the sale and reproduction of his paintings and inventions, including a movie projector and a device for repairing torpedo damage to battleships. There are also letters from painter Hanny Bouman to "Aunt Becky," and letters to Lillian after Thieme's death regarding the sale and exhibition of his paintings.

Notes and writings are comprised of notes on watercolor painting, lists of Thieme's work owned by Mrs. Sally Fenelon Young, three address books, and lists of household chores. Also found are two typescript writings titled, "Must Sixty-five Always be the Deadline?" and "Majority Wins."

Business records contain shipment and exhibition records, price lists, correspondence with the J. J. Gillespie Company, receipts, and invoices.

Printed material includes clippings, a press release, exhibition catalogs, brochures from Thieme's New Summer School of Art, a blueprint of a section of Rockport, Massachusetts, and picture postcards.

Photographs are of Thieme, his family, and classes at the Thieme School of Art in Rockport.

The collection also includes a half-tone printing block of a work of art.

Scope and Contents:
Correspondence, diaries, writings, files on publications, art works, photographs, catalogs and clippings.
Correspondence is with Yovan Radinkovitch, 1940s, and Mrs. Edward A. McGill at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1960.
Twelve diaries, 1939-1976, contain drafts of letters, clippings, lists of exhibited, sold and proposed lithographs and paintings, poems, a short autobiography, notes for books Sea Dust and A Wisconsin Story, and accounts of her travels to the Caribbean (1939), France (1956), Florida (1962), Spain (1966) and Maryland (1972). Some highlighted events are Andrus's appointment to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1952, her studies in France in 1956, as well as her living in Gloucester, 1964-1966, and Rockport, Mass. Other diary topics include Geo-metrical Art, 1957, the Rockport Art Association, and details of exhibitions throughout her career.
Writings include typescripts of The Blue Tree, Comments and Criticisms by Boardman Robinson (with related letter), Earth Foam: A Second Book of Poems, The Shining River: A Sketchbook of the Hudson (with draft), The Spirit and the Candle: El Greco and the Renaissance World (with draft); and writings about life in Gloucester and New York. Summary:
The papers of landscape painter Aldro T. Hibbard measure 1.7 linear feet and date from 1914 to 1971. The papers document his career as a painter through correspondence; diaries, notes and other writings; awards, discussions, and other professional activity; clippings, exhibition catalogs, and other printed material; and personal sound recordings.
Scope and Contents:
The papers of landscape painter Aldro T. Hibbard measure 1.7 linear feet and date from 1914 to 1971. The papers document his career as a painter through correspondence; diaries, notes and other writings; awards, discussions, and other professional activity files; clippings, exhibition catalogs, and other printed material; and personal sound recordings.

Correspondence includes letters to his wife, Winifred, fan letters, and letters to friends and art organizations. Writings include notes, a notebook, a diary of his travels through Europe in 1914, and a diary from 1962. Professional material includes awards, an audio reel lecture delivered to the Rockport Art Association, one motion picture film, photographs of Hibbard and his students, and a biographical statement. Printed material includes newspaper clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, and material related to the Hibbard School of Painting. Sound Recordings consist of 17 wire recordings. The recordings are mostly unlabeled and primarily personal in nature, but some contain lectures and sales records.
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged into five series.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1922-1971 (0.5 linear feet; Box 1)

Series 2: Writings, circa 1914-1962 (0.1 linear feet; Box 1)

Series 3: Professional Activity Files, 1927-1971 (0.2 linear feet; Box 1, FC 4)

Series 4: Printed Material, 1933-1970 (0.5 linear feet; Boxes 1-2)

Series 5: Sound Recordings, circa 1950 (0.4 linear feet; Boxes 2-3)
Biographical / Historical:
Aldro T. Hibbard (1886-1972) was an American landscape painter who worked primarily in oil. He studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and later at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Hibbard assisted in founding the Rockport Art Association and served as its president for 20 years. Hibbard also created and taught at the Hibbard School of Painting in Rockport, Massachusetts.
Provenance:
The Aldro Hibbard papers were donated 1977 and 1979 by Winifred Hibbard, the widow of Aldro T. Hibbard.
