Scope and Contents:
The papers document art historian Whitney Chadwick's groundbreaking studies of gender and sexuality in surrealism, modernism, and contemporary art. Files include research materials for Chadwick's books including the seminal Women, Art and Society and Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement. Included are correspondence with artists, colleagues and publishers; photographs and slides; interviews on microcassettes; transcripts of interviews and letters; scripts for lectures and public talks; and documents related to rights and reproduction requests, speaking engagements, teaching at San Francisco State University, fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute, research in Scandinavian, and her honorary doctorate from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Artists of particular emphasis include Leonora Carrington, Romaine Brooks, and Sheila Hicks. Additional items include an early scrapbook detailing Chadwick's trip to Berlin as the recipient of an American Field Service "America Abroad" scholarship when in high school, and reviews and other materials related to her novel "Framed".
Biographical / Historical:
Whitney Chadwick (1943-) is an art historian in San Francisco, Calif.­ Chadwick was educated at Middlebury College and The Pennsylvania State University. She specialized in twentieth-century European and American art, feminism and gender studies. She taught at San Francisco State University. She was married to painter and fellow SFSU faculty member Robert Bechtle.

Summary:
Ted Stamm slides of works of art and exhibitions measure 2.2 linear feet and date from circa 1968-1986, and 2018. The collection is comprised primarily of approximately 6450 35mm slides assembled by the painter Ted Stamm between his arrival in New York in 1968 and his death in 1984. The majority of the slides were photographed by Stamm himself, and collectively form a unique and expansive record of artworks and exhibitions on view in New York during that time period, by a variety of artists including Stamm.
Scope and Contents:
Ted Stamm slides of works of art and exhibitions measure 2.2 linear feet and date from circa 1968-1986, and 2018. The collection is comprised primarily of approximately 6450 35mm slides assembled by the painter Ted Stamm between his arrival in New York in 1968 and his death in 1984. The majority of the slides were photographed by Stamm himself, and collectively form a unique and expansive record of artworks and exhibitions on view in New York during that time period, by a variety of artists including Stamm.

The collection includes both exhibition views and individual artworks photographed in situ. In addition to exhibitions in galleries and nonprofit spaces, Stamm also photographed works installed in public spaces, graffiti and street art, and views of the gallery facades and architectural fabric of Lower Manhattan.

Stamm used the slides in his own teaching, and the collection includes a set of slides documenting periods of art history. Additional teaching material includes examples of course descriptions, syllabi, reading lists, and other teaching materials for courses taught by Stamm. Printed material includes an artist book, an exhibition catalog, and a monograph/catalog.
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged as three series.

Series 1: Slides, circa 1968-circa 1984 (Boxes 1-2; 2 linear feet)

Series 2: Teaching Material, 1977-1982 (Box 3; 0.1 linear feet)

Series 3: Printed Material, 1979-1986, 2018 (Box 3; 0.1 linear feet)
Biographical / Historical:
Ted Stamm (1944-1984) was a multidisciplinary conceptual artist and educator in New York, New York, known for his focused series of paintings, works on paper, and studies. Stamm's studies, such as the Wooster series, were influenced by the shapes, street contours, and intersections he could see from his studio on Wooster Street in SoHo.

Stamm was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Hofstra University, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1967. In 1968 he settled in New York City and his early work was included in exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum Art School in New York and in the alumni show at Hofstra University in 1971.

From 1974 until his death in 1984, Stamm lived and worked on the top floor of 101 Wooster Street in New York City. There he began his iconic group of works titled Woosters, and subsequent series including Dodgers, from the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, C-Dodgers influenced by the Concorde planes he observed at John F. Kennedy Airport, and Designators, graffiti Stamm painted on buildings in stages which he would photograph each time he returned to develop the graffiti further.

Stamm's work was exhibited widely throughout his life, both internationally and in the United States. He taught classes at the School of Visual Arts, Hofstra University, and C. W. Post College, and was awarded National Endowment for the Arts and Guggenheim fellowships in 1981 and 1983.

Stamm died of congenital heart disease at the age of 39.

Biographical / Historical:
Joseph J. Greenberg (1915-1991) was a sculptor and educator from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Greenberg first became interested in sculpture as a child while attending the Oak Lane Country Day School and meeting sculptor Boris Blai, who was working as the school's art teacher. Years later Greenberg discovered Blai had become the director of the Tyler School of Art at Temple University prompting him to transfer there from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he had been studying engineering. Greenberg graduated from the Tyler School of Art in 1939 as a member of the first class of Tyler's complete five-year program. He went on to study in Italy where he had his first solo show in Rome and exhibited in the twenty sixth Venice Biennale. In 1951, Greenberg was the winner of a prize from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's National Sculpture Exhibition. He returned to Philadelphia in 1953 and continued living and working in the city until his death in 1991.

Greenberg was known for his large public sculptures in Pennsylvania include Bear and Cub in the Philadelphia Zoo, the aluminum seal of Pennsylvania on the State Office Building, and Symbol of Progress located in the heart of Bethlehem, PA by the entrance of the Bethlehem Area Public Library. In addition to his studio work, Greenberg taught at the Oak Lane Country Day School, the Tyler School, the New Hope Fine Arts Workshop, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Fleisher Memorial.
Separated Materials:
The Archives of American Art also holds microfilm of material lent for microfilming (reel 4566) including two photograph albums containing photographs of Greenberg's sculptures. Loaned materials were returned to the lender, Mrs. Sheila Greenberg, and are not described in the collection container inventory.

Donated 1991 by Sheila Greenberg, Joseph's widow, except for the photograph albums which were lent for microfilming. Collected and microfilmed as part of AAA's Philadelphia Arts Documentation Project.

Personal papers include resumes and printed material such as exhibition catalogs and announcements and clippings. Camblin's artwork includes sketches, expressive writings, drawings, and prints. Photographic material includes images of artwork, friends, family, trips, and miscellany; and moving images include home videos of art, art techniques, leisure activities, and autobiographical films.

Biographical / Historical:
Bob Bilyeu Camblin (1928-2010) was a modernist painter and educator active in Houston, Texas. Camblin experimented with a wide variety of media and is known for collaborative projects with many artists, including a collective known as The Holding Firm with Earl Staley and Joe Tate in Houston.

Born in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Camblin served in the United State Army (1948-1949) and Air Force (1950-1951) before receiving his bachelor of fine arts in 1954, and his master of fine arts degree in 1955. He worked as a map make from 1955-1958 before holding teaching posts at multiple institutions including the Kansas City Art Institute, the Ringling School of Art, Sarasota Florida, the University of Illinois, the University of Detroit, the University of Utah, and Rice University in Houston.

While living in Houston Camblin collaborated with artists Earl Staley and Joe Tate, as the B. E. and J. Holding Firm, or The Holding Firm. The collective worked on multiple projects including paintings, drawings, art excursions, and exhibitions.

Camblin's first one-man show was held in 1955 at the Kansas City Art Institute and his work has been exhibited in other solo exhibitions including at Oklahoma State University (1961), Plumtree Gallery, Salt Lake City, Utah (1965-1966), Windsor College, Canada (1965), David Gallery, Houston (1969-1970), and the Graham Gallery in Houston (1989). Camblin participated in many group exhibitions including ART:USA 58 (1958), Fulbright Artists Exhibition, Nelson Gallery of Art, Kansas City (1958), Childe Hassam Purchase Fund Show, American Academy of Arts and Letters (1958), and Printmaking in Texas: The 1980s Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth (1990).
Separated Materials:
The Archives of American Art also holds microfilm of material lent for microfilming by Mrs. Eldon Jensen on Reel 2248, including six sketchbooks, 1979-1980, containing sketches, writings, and a few letters. Loaned materials were returned to the lender and are not described in the collection container inventory.

Some of the material from reels 3461 and 3462 including correspondence, clippings, files on the Document Show, the Barter Show, B. E. and J. Holding Firm and the Venice Venture are available for use only at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and through interlibrary loan, and are not described in the collection container inventory.
