Guy Longshore served in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a command gunner on a Boeing B-29 Superfortress in the Pacific theater during World War II. This collection consists of photographic material made from images taken by Guy Longshore during World War II, as well as a news clipping about the collection and a small pamphlet written by Longshore that includes a story about his service in World War II.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of photographic material made from images taken by Guy Longshore during World War II. Four of the images are printed as color slides and nine are black and white prints of various sizes, one of which is laminated. There are also copy prints of almost every image and one image is seen only as a copy print. There is some caption information for most of the images. The images in the collection include an aerial view of bombing damage to Tokyo taken shortly after Japan's surrender; views of Boeing B-29 Superfortresses and North American P-51 Mustangs on the ground and in flight; a view of the Base Operations building at Isley Field (the sign on the building has the base's name misspelled); and a view of Mount Fuji taken from a Boeing B-29 Superfortress in which the wing of the aircraft is partially visible. Four of the images of Boeing B-29 Superfortresses in flight are in color. In addition to the photographic material, this collection contains a news clipping about the collection and a small pamphlet written by Longshore that includes a story about his service in World War II.

Guy Longshore served in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a command gunner on a Boeing B-29 Superfortress in the Pacific theater during World War II. During his time in service, Longshore took photographs on the ground and from the air using his personal Argus camera. Shortly after the surrender of Japan, Longshore took an aerial view showing the bombing damage to Tokyo, Japan from the bombardier's seat of a Boeing B-29 Superfortress using U. S. Army camera equipment.

The 7th Photographic Group (variously known as 7th Photographic Reconnaissance and Mapping Group, 7th Photographic Group ((Reconnaissance)), and 7th Reconnaissance Group) was activated on 1 May 1943 and assigned to the Eighth Air Force on 7 July 1943. The group was tasked to obtain information about bombardment targets and damage inflicted by bombardment operations; provide mapping service for air and ground units; observe and report on enemy transportation, installations, and positions; and obtain data on weather conditions. This collection consists of a photo album documenting the history and activities of the unit.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a 90 page photo album (unbound); each page is assembled from a montage of photographs, drawings (usually charcoal sketches), and/or typed text labels, with professionally hand-drawn graphic titles. The completed page setup was photographed and printed as a 9 x 9 inch copy photograph which was then mounted onto a 9.4 x 12.4 inch black paper album page. Mounts have been removed from the first 12 pages. Pages are numbered 1 through 91; page 80 is missing from the set.
The first portion of the album presents an overview of the reconnaissance unit's activities, showing bombardment damage to German industrial targets, airfields, and V-2 rocket launch sites, and reconnaissance support for the US Army advance across France following D-Day. Also depicted are the dangers faced by reconnaissance pilots (shown flying the Lockheed F-5 Lightning) from "Weather, Fighters, and Flak!" Later portions of the album show assorted views of England, including unidentified rural areas as well as noted landmarks in London, Oxford, Windsor, and Stratford-upon-Avon. There are several pages showing visits by celebrities including Bing Crosby. A couple of pages show assorted aircraft in flight, including the North American P-51 Mustang, Boeing B-17 Superfortress, and Supermarine Spitfire in USAAF markings.

The 7th Photographic Group (variously known as 7th Photographic Reconnaissance and Mapping Group, 7th Photographic Group ((Reconnaissance)), and 7th Reconnaissance Group) was activated on 1 May 1943 and assigned to the Eighth Air Force on 7 July 1943. Stationed initially at Mount Farm, England, in March 1945 they moved to Chalgrove, England, and then from October 21 through November 1945 were stationed in Hitcham, England; they were inactivated in England on 21 November 1945. The group was tasked to obtain information about bombardment targets and damage inflicted by bombardment operations; provide mapping service for air and ground units; observe and report on enemy transportation, installations, and positions; and obtain data on weather conditions. 7th Photo Group received a Distinguished Unit Citation (DUC) for operations during the Normandy campaign of June 1944; later that year they covered missile sites in France, carried out photographic mapping missions for ground forces advancing across France, and provided reconnaissance support for the airborne attack on Holland and for the Battle of the Bulge.

This collection consists of fifty-three films made by North American Rockwell during Storms' association with the corporation. This collection also consists of a folder of biographical information on Storms and 213 slides, which include the following topics: Apollo projects; Soviet spacecraft at an unknown Soviet museum; and images of the Bell 47G helicopter.
Biographical / Historical:
Harrison A. Storms, Jr., (1915-1992) helped design Apollo spacecraft and many other aerospace vehicles. A former executive of Rockwell International and its predecessor company, North American Aviation, Storms made contributions to over 40 aircraft and space vehicles. Storms received his bachelor and masters degrees in mechanical engineering from Northwestern University, and an aeronautical engineering degree from the California Institute of Technology. Storms was then employed as an aeronautical researcher at North American Aviation in 1941 and during World War II contributed to the advancement of jet propulsion technology. After World War II, Storms served as Chief Engineer of the X-15 program, and also helped design the F-51 Mustang, F-86 Sabre Jet, F-100 Super Sabre and the XB-70. Storms went on to become the President of North American's Space and Information Systems Division which won contracts for both the Saturn second stage launch vehicle and the Apollo command and service modules for the successful lunar landing program. Storms was the recipient of many honors and awards and a member of several professional organizations, including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

This collection consists of a scrapbook documenting Edward J. Glowka's service with the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II. The scrapbook was created by Glowka's wife, who he met after the war. The scrapbook contains mainly black and white photographs but also includes one hand-tinted photograph of Glowka in uniform; a "Domain of the Golden Dragon" certificate for crossing the International Date Line; two patches; an original pencil sketch of Glowka, in uniform, signed by [first name unreadable] Faier; a "Neptunus Rex" certificate for crossing the Equator; and two copies of Glowka's Separation Qualification Record issued by the U.S. Army Air Forces. The photographs vary in size and were taken in many places including Biak, Papua, Indonesia; Guam; Manila, the Philippines; and Saipan, Mariana Islands. Glowka appears in a number of the photographs. The photographs show daily life on base; military personnel; bombing damage; local citizens and their daily activities; ships; and nose art on aircraft. Edward J. Glowka (1926 to c. 1983) served with the U.S. Army Air Forces in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Glowka was an Airplane and Engine Mechanic with the Air Transport Command. Glowka entered active service in July 1944 and was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal in August 1946.

This collection consists of 63 black-and-white photographs and eight 35 mm color slides (transparencies) documenting the training of an unidentified United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) pilot in the late World War II period, followed by his service with the United States Air Force (USAF) Alaskan Air Command in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Aircraft featured include the North American P-51H Mustang and the Lockheed F-94 Starfire.
Scope and Contents:
The photographs in this collection fall roughly into three groups; many of the images include an unidentified man who is assumed to be a relative of the donor. The first group consists of 8 x 10 inch black and white print photographs of U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) pilot training aircraft and activities at various unidentified locations in the continental United States. Aircraft pictured include a Porterfield Model 50 Collegiate biplane (possibly part of the Civilian Pilot Training Program), Fairchild PT-19 Cornell, Boeing PT-27 Kaydet, Vultee BT-13, North American AT-6 Texan, and Cessna AT-8 Bobcat. The second group of 8 x 10 inch black and white print photographs depicts a U.S. Air Force (USAF) North American P-51H (F-51H) Mustang unit at Ladd Air Force Base—and possibly at Mile 26 Satellite Field (later known as Eielson Air Force Base); this is believed to be the 65th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, who were based in the Fairbanks, Alaska, area and flying P-51s circa 1946-1947. Additional aircraft seen in this group include a Boeing PT-27 Kaydet primary trainer fitted with an enclosed cockpit for cold climate training, Douglas C-47 and C-54 cargo aircraft, Boeing B-29 Superfortresses, and a group of three Sikorsky R-5 helicopters. The third group of eight 35mm color slides (transparencies) depict Lockheed F-94 Starfire fighter jets (and one view of a North American F-82 Twin Mustang); these are believed to be aircraft assigned to either the 65th or 449th Fighter-Interceptor Squadrons, and are seen in low-level flight near Ladd Air Force Base circa 1952-1953. Both squadrons were assigned to the USAF's Alaskan Air Command.
Arrangement:
In 1990, the black-and-white print photographs in this collection were reproduced in negative number order on the second side (Side B) of National Air and Space Museum Archival Videodisc 7, a LaserDisc CAV format 12-inch (30 cm) optical disc published by the Smithsonian Institution. Print numbers applied during videodisc production are used as item-level image numbers (print numbers NASM 7B03406 to NASM 7B03476, videodisc frame capture numbers VD-7B03406 to VD-7B03476) and the black-and-white prints are stored in videodisc number order. Color copies of the 35 mm slides were produced by the Smithsonian Office of Printing and Photographic Services (OPPS) and are stored in negative number order.

Throughout World War II, military air bases in Alaska provided a vital link in the route ferrying aircraft, troops, and materials from the continental United States to the Pacific Theatre of operations. At the end of World War II, as one of the northernmost military air posts in the country, Ladd Army Air Field, located outside the town of Fairbanks, Alaska, was strategically positioned to play an important role in the Cold War, being mere minutes away by jet from the Siberian coast of the Soviet Union. Renamed Ladd Air Force Base in 1947 when the United States Air Force was formed as a separate service, the field became the Northern Sector headquarters for the newly formed Alaskan Air Command, whose mission included air defense of Alaska, regional support for Strategic Air Command (SAC) and North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) operations, strategic reconnaissance, and arctic research.

This footage consists of five reels of film. The footage includes Preddy's combat footage, including most of his aerial victories through August 6, 1944 and some of this strafing mission footage. In addition, there is also gun camera footage of Preddy firing at two targets and ground targets in 1943.
Biographical / Historical:
Major George E. Preddy, Jr. (1919-1944) was an American ace during World War II, with thirty-two and a half (32 1/2) enemy planes to his credit. Six of those enemy aircraft were downed by Preddy in a little more than six minutes. In 1940, Preddy made three attempts to join the US Navy, each time rejected because of physical problems, before he joined the Army Air Corps and was ordered to report to flight training in April 1941. In December 1941, he graduated from flight training and was sent to Australia, to join the 9th Squadron, 49th Pursuit Group. In 1943 he was sent to the European Theatre, where he was part of the 352nd Fighter Group. He crashed to his death when his North American P-51 Mustang was hit during the Battle of Bulge by American machine gunners' flak on Christmas Day, 1944.
