O.K. Harris Gallery (New York, N.Y.)  Search this
Extent:
32 Linear feet (Boxes 44-76)
Type:
Archival materials
Date:
1960s-2014
bulk 1969-1999
Scope and Contents:
Photographic materials consist of photographs, slides, negatives, and digital images of artwork by artists associated with OK Harris Works of Art and views of the gallery's exhibition installations from 1960s-2014. The majority of photographs and slides carry identifying information, e.g., titles, dates, media, and photographic credits.

Artists' photo books consist of copy prints of artwork by 59 artists actively represented by OK Harris Works of Art and by artists formerly associated with the gallery. Artists' slides are of artwork that was exhibited at OK Harris and other galleries from the 1960s-2000s.

Installation views preserved in 61 binders document solo exhibitions and other shows presented at OK Harris during its 45 year history. Negatives of OK Harris installations photographed by Eric Pollitzer and Dan Lenore include numbered references, but no key is included. Other installation views include exhibitions by gallery artists at other venues, e.g., the Brevard Museum, New England College and the Studio Art Centers International.

Photographs of miscellaneous subjects include a photo book of the gallery's artists exhibiting at art expositions, art fairs, and museums, among them Tokyo Art Expo (1991), the Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art (1994), and the Chicago Art Fair (1999, 2002). Of particular interest are photographs of exhibition openings at 19 Galerie Des 4 Mouvements in Paris and at Galerie de Gestlo in Dusseldorf held during the 1970s. Also found are loose miscellaneous photographs, and an album of photographs of the OK Harris Works of Art galleries, office, and staff including Ivan Karp.
Arrangement:
The original order of the material has been maintained. Artists' slides are labeled as "Group A" and "Group B." According to gallery staff, the groupings relate to the time artists needed to produce enough new work for an exhibition. Many, but not all volumes are numbered, and damaged binders have been dismantled. Additional photographic materials are included among the artists' files (Series 4) and with Ivan C. Karp's personal papers (Series 8 ).

This series is arranged as 7 subseries:

Summary:
Fred Wiseman, along with J. W. Peters and D.C. Prentiss, built a biplane named the Wiseman-Peters. During July 1910, both Peters and Wiseman flew the Wiseman-Peters and the following year Wiseman entered the 1911 Aviation Meet at Selfridge Field, Michigan. On February 17, 1911, Wiseman made the first airplane-carried mail flight officially sanctioned by any local U.S. post office and made available to the public when he carried mail, a bundle of newspapers and a sack of groceries from Petaluma, CA, to Santa Rosa, CA. After the 1911 season, Wiseman gave up flying.

This collection consists of a large scrapbook. Inside the scrapbook are newspaper clippings, correspondence, 1st Day Covers, race tickets, and photographs chronicling both Wiseman's automobile and aviation careers.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a large scrapbook. Inside the scrapbook are newspaper clippings, correspondence, 1st Day Covers, race tickets, and photographs chronicling both Wiseman's automobile and aviation careers.

Note: The digital images in this finding aid were repurposed from scans made by an outside contractor for a commercial product and may show irregular cropping and orientation in addition to color variations resulting from damage to and deterioration of the original objects.
Arrangement:
Materials are in the order the donor attached them to the scrapbook. Correspondence is often located within the envelope that is attached to the scrapbook. Some materials are loose and have been left in the arrangement in which they were found, unless a portion of a newspaper article could be matched to its other parts.
Biographical / Historical:
Fred Wiseman (1875-1961) was born in Santa Rosa, California, and after attending local schools he engaged in both the bicycle and automotive businesses. Wiseman won considerable fame racing Stoddard-Dayton cars on the West Coast as well as in the Chicago area. He became interested in aviation after attending the Wright brothers' homecoming celebration in 1909 and the first Los Angeles aviation meet at Dominguez Field in 1910.

After these two events, Wiseman was convinced he wanted to learn to fly and so he returned to his home in Santa Rosa and persuaded Ben Noonan to put up $10,000 to build a plane. Wiseman, along with J.

(The first air mail flight sanctioned by the U.S. Post Office in Washington, D.C., took place on September 23, 1911, when Earle Ovington carried mail from Garden City, Long Island, to Mineola; and the first continuously scheduled U.S. air mail service began on May 15, 1918, with routes between Washington, Philadelphia, and New York.)

During 1911, Wiseman had an active season of exhibition work, including flying for one week at the California State Fair. However, after this season Wiseman gave up flying because he thought there was no future in it. He sold his plane and returned to the automobile business. He later worked for Standard Oil Company of California. Wiseman was a member of the Early Birds of Aviation, an organization of pilots who flew solo in an aircraft prior to December 17, 1916.

Weldon Cooke, another pioneer aviator from California, bought and modified the Wiseman-Peters aircraft, renaming it the Wiseman-Cooke. Cooke flew the Wiseman-Cooke for exhibition and air mail flights. The Wiseman-Cooke aircraft is currently part of the Smithsonian Institution's collections.

History of the Museum of the American Indian/Heye Foundation:
The Museum of the American Indian/Heye Foundation was established by wealthy collector George Gustav Heye in 1908. Heye began collecting American Indian artifacts as early as 1897 and his collection rapidly increased over the next several years. Based in New York, Heye bought collections and documentary photographs, sponsored expeditions, and traveled and collected items himself. In addition, once MAI was established he sponsored numerous expeditions across the Western Hemisphere, including North American, Canada, South America and Central America.

From 1908 to 1917 Heye housed his artifacts on temporary loan at the University of Pennsylvania's University Museum, Pennsylvania, in lofts on East 33rd Street in New York City, and at other depositories. In 1917, the collections moved from his apartment to their permanent museum location at Audubon Terrace, at 155th Street and Broadway in New York City. The museum, containing ethnographic and archaeological collections from North, Central and South America, opened to the public in 1922. Less than ten years later, Heye completed a storage facility in the Pelham Bay area of the Bronx, known as the Research Branch. Heye served as Chairman of the Board and Museum Director until his death in 1957. After growing concern about the financial and other management of the collections came to a head, the museum became part of the Smithsonian Institution in 1989 and in 1994 opened exhibit space in the U.S. Customs House at Bowling Green near New York City's Battery Park. The Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, Maryland later opened in 1999 and the main Washington, DC museum opened in 2004.

Please visit the following links for more information about the history of the museum; History of the Collection, Collections Overview, and Significance of the Collection. Moreover, for information about how the museum currently cares for and exhibits the collection, please see the Conservation department and recent entries regarding Exhibitions and Conservation on the NMAI Blog. In addition, see portions of the NMAI Archive Center's collections highlighted in the SIRIS Blog.
Related Materials:
In 2004, the Huntington Fee Library, once part of the MAI/Heye Foundation, was transferred to the Cornell University Library Rare Book and Manuscript Collection. While this collection mainly contained books, it also contained a significant amount of archival materials. The Huntington Free Library's Native American Collection contains outstanding materials documenting the history, culture, languages, and arts of the native tribes of both North and South America, as well as contemporary politics and human rights issues are also important components of the collection. Further information about the collection and links to finding aids can be found here: rmc.library.cornell.edu/collections/HFL_old.html.

Biographical / Historical:
M. R. Harrington (1882-1971) was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on July 6, 1882, to Rose Martha Smith Harrington and Mark Walrod Harrington, astronomer, meteorologist, and then director of the University of Michigan's Detroit Observatory. The family later lived in Washington DC; Seattle, Washington; and Mount Vernon, New York. Harrington's early interest in Indians and the discoveries of ancient sites and artifacts near his home in New York led him to F. W. Putnam of the American Museum of Natural History. While still a teenager, Harrington worked for Putnam, excavating sites around New York City. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in anthropology from Columbia University in New York, writing his 1908 master's thesis on Iroquois archaeology.

Harrington met and worked for George Gustav Heye in collecting ethnological and archaeological artifacts even before Heye transformed his extensive collection into the Museum of the American Indian. In February 1916, Harrington came to Fulton (Hempstead County) to lead an archaeological expedition in the Red River valley for the newly formed museum. Harrington's team explored Caddo mound and village sites in Hempstead, Howard, and Garland counties. Harrington then published descriptions of the sites, interpreted sequences of building and mound construction, and illustrated representative artifacts in Certain Caddo Sites in Arkansas. Harrington's work in northwest Arkansas began after the Museum of the American Indian purchased a collection from W. C. Barnard of Missouri, including Indian basketry and other organic objects preserved by the unusually arid conditions of some Ozark Mountain rock shelters. Harrington directed an expedition to the area for the museum in 1922 and 1923. Harrington published an article on this work in American Anthropologist in 1924, but his book on the subject, The Ozark Bluff-Dwellers, was not published until 1960. From 1919 to 1928, Harrington also led expeditions in Tennessee, Nevada, and Texas for the Museum of the American Indian before moving to Los Angeles, California, to become the Director of Research and later curator of the Southwest Museum. He focused his archaeological investigations on Nevada and California for the remainder of his career. In 1956, Harrington was awarded an honorary doctorate from Occidental College in Los Angeles. M. R. Harrington died on June 30, 1971, in Los Angeles. He is buried in San Fernando Mission Cemetery, Mission Hills, California.
