In the early 1980s, Ralph Coe began officially collectiong native American art on behalf of the American Federation of Art. The project's goal was to establish a substantial collection composed of entirely contemporary Native American Art. From this concept came the traveling exhibition, Lost and Found Traditions: Native American Art 1965-1985 (1985-1986). The papers in this series document the collection and exhibition through correspondence, loan and purchase agreements, inventories, financial records, catalogue drafts, and printed material. The collection was ultimately transferred to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in 1989. Also included are papers surrounding a postlude to the exhibition written by Coe in the mid-1990s.
