Scope and Contents note:
Personal papers including correspondence, photographs, and ephemera document Russell E. Train's efforts to create the Africana collection. Letters also relate to the creation and distribution of the collection catalog. Correspondents comprise personal and professional contacts, and provide information relating to the method of acquisition and provenance. Includes letters from Richard Sawyer, who acted as Train's personal bookseller.
Collection Rights:
The collection is housed in the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd Library of Natural History, which is open to researchers Monday through Friday in the afternoons, from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m.; morning visits are by appointment only. Please call (202) 633-1184 or email AskaLibrarian@si.edu for an appointment.

Scope and Contents:
Papers relating to natural history and Du Simitière's collection of specimens; material collected on the history of the West Indies and Colonial American affairs in New England, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, including the Lancaster Treaty, 1744, and Indian treaties, 1721-1756; letters, 1560-1781; journals, pamphlets and extracts; a broadside of the Du Simitière sale, 1785; drawings and portraits of American legislators and soldiers by Du Simitière; and leaves of a medieval illuminated manuscript.
Biographical / Historical:
Portrait painter, curator and naturalist; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born in Geneva, Switzerland. Came to America in 1765 after spending several years in the West Indies collecting natural history specimens. Elected curator, 1768, of the American Philosophical Society, and set up a natural history museum. He collected Revolutionary War ephemera and literature.
Provenance:
Lent for microfilming, 1955, by the Library Company of Philadelphia. In 1785 Du Simitière's effects were sold at auction, resulting in his library being scattered. Most of the manuscripts were purchased by the Library Company of Philadelphia. The Library of Congress later acquired some others. The whereabouts of some material is still uncertain.
Restrictions:
The Archives of American art does not own the original papers. Use is limited to the microfilm copy.

The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) was created in 1985. It is a multidisciplinary organization, including persons within the fields of anthropology, zoology, botany, geology, paleontology, and others interested in the development and preservation of natural history collections. This accession consists of records documenting Gerald R. Fitzgerald's activities as a member and officer of SPNHC. Most of the files were created during Fitzgerald's tenure as President of SPNHC, 1992-1993, and document annual meetings, the work of SPNHC committees, and SPNHC by-laws and organization. Included are photographs from annual meetings.
