Scope and Contents:
The Records of Indian Interest Organizations series contains material regarding other organizations working on issues relating to American Indians. The records, including correspondence, publications, and clippings, document both the activities of these groups themselves and their relationships with NCAI.

This series is divided into three subseries: Other Indian Organizations, composed of other Indian member organizations such as Native American Rights Fund (NARF); Non-Indian Support Groups, organizations founded for the purpose of aiding Indians such as the Association of American Indian Affairs (AAIA); and General Interest Groups, only part of whose work was made up of Indian issues.

Attorneys and Legal Interest Groups

Scope and Contents:
The Attorneys and Legal Interest Groups series documents both NCAI's legal representation and issues involving American Indians and lawyers more generally. The Attorneys subseries consists primarily of correspondence and memoranda from NCAI's lawyers. The Legal Interest Groups subseries documents organizations around the country that provided legal services to Native communities. The Legal Services subseries deals mostly with Congressional reauthorization and funding of the Legal Services Corporation, a federal agency that provides legal services; these records derive from Suzan Shown Harjo's work at the Native American Rights Fund, and include other documents from her work there.

Scope and Contents:
The Records of Suzan Shown Harjo, executive director of NCAI from 1984-1989, reflect Harjo's professional activities at NCAI and elsewhere. The series includes numerous files created while she was the legislative liaison for the Native American Rights Fund (1979-1983), as well as records of her work on the boards of organizations such as Common Cause. Materials include correspondence, publications, drafts, and clippings.

There are eight subseries: Indian Claims: Eastern Land Claims; Indian Claims: Statute of Limitations; Conference on The Indian Reorganization Act - An Assessment and Prospectus Fifty Years Later; Inter-American Indian Institute (IAII); Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA); Institute of the American West (IAW); Common Cause; Office Files.

Scope and Contents:
Series 2: Chronological events contains recordings of events hosted or attended by NCAI members between 1952 and 1997. This includes executive council meetings, conferences, symposia, workshops and congressional hearings. NCAI frequently partnered with other organizations such as the Arizona Intertribal Council, American Indian Development (AID), American Indian Policy Review Commission, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Health Service, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Native American Rights Fund. These organizations often held meetings in conjunction with NCAI some of which are reflected in this series. Several events of note include the Arizona Intertribal Institute (1955), The National Indian Policy Conference (1974), LEAA Conference (1978), Environmental Protection Hearings and Seminars (1988) and the Senate Indian Affairs Special Investigations Subcommittee meetings (1989). Additionally, many important Native American leaders and activists can be heard speaking on topics such as water rights, education reform, housing, energy planning, tribal government structure, jurisdiction and veterans affairs.

This series is arranged chronologically. The undated materials are all listed at the end in alphabetical order.
