Naples Zoological Station: The Naples Zoological Station, established by a German scientist, Anton Dohrn, provided laboratory facilities near Naples, Italy, where an international group of scientists could pursue research. Supporters of the Station, including the Smithsonian, could nominate scientists to occupy a "table" there for stays of varying duration. The Smithsonian filled its places by referring applicants to a panel of advisors for approval. This material deals with the early days of Smithsonian support and is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. See also record unit 45.
