Biographical:
Photographer and conservationist Tom Zetterstrom (1945- ) lives and works in Canaan, Connecticut. He is known for his photographic series, The Moving Point of View and Portraits of Trees, the latter project spans nearly forty years and is a visual documentation of his passion for trees.

Born in Canaan, Connecticut, Zetterstrom studied botany then sculpture and photography at Colorado College and later at Pratt Institute. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967, shortly thereafter, he moved to Washington, D.C. , to serve as director of photography at the New Thing Art and Architectural Center in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Zetterstrom taught photography to inner-city youth at the arts space, which was founded by John Topper Carew with the aim to make art widely accessible to District residents by providing a place for local children to create and display their art.

Tom Zetterstrom has exhibited his work in more than thirty solo exhibitions and participated in group shows at The International Center of Photography in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museum of New Mexico, Sante Fe. His photographs are in the collections of various museums and libraries, including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, New York Public Library, and the Library of Congress.

His work has been supported by the Trolland and Lee Link Fund, the Art Resources Trust, the Robin Tost Fund, and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. Zetterstrom's photographs appeared in several publications including the New York Times, Aperture, and the New England Journal of Photography.

Zetterstrom has successfully combined his photography career with his passion for sustainability and environmental justice. In 1999, he and other conservationists founded Elm Watch, a forestry organization dedicated to preserving American elms. He augments his photography of trees with lectures at schools and community organizations which allows him to use multiple mediums to reach and educate audiences about the natural world.

This series contains magazines, pamphlets, maps, postcards, newsletters, and the like. Separated out are: printed catalogs and programs of a variety of Indian art expositions, many of which include Wolf Robe as an exhibitor. Galleries and museums represented include: the Department of the Interior Art Gallery, The Museum of New Mexico Fine Arts Building, and especially the Philbrook Art Center. File contains blank postcards showing the Santa Fe mission church in Mexico, related to consulting work for the Museum of New Mexico. Odell was hired by the Museum and their conservator Claire Muzenreider to consult "on the structural aspect of proposed conservation treatment of a large retablo in the Santa Cruz mission church near Santa Fe" (Odell personal correspondence July 12th, 2016).

Biographical / Historical:
Gust G. Carlson, of the University of Michigan, was a scholarship holder with the Laboratory of Anthropology, Santa Fe, ethnological field school group led by Ralph Linton. The group worked with Comanche Indians at Walter, Oklahoma. Other members of the group were Waldo Wedel (see his Comanche notes), and E. Adamson Hoebel (see photo lot 91-9).

Summary:
This collection contains gelatin silver photographs shot by photographer David Grant Noble that depict Mohawk ironworkers constructing a building in New York City and Anishinaabe (Chippewa/Ojibwa) wild rice harvesting in Wisconsin and Minnesota, 1970-1971.
Scope and Contents:
This collection contains 140 gelatin silver prints shot by photographer David Grant Noble from 1970-1971. The photographs depict Mohawk ironworkers at a construction site at Park Avenue and 53rd Street in New York City; Lake Superior Chippewa band of Anishinaabe harvesting wild rice on the Bad River Reservation in Odanah, Wisconsin; Minnesota Chippewa [Bois Forte/Nett Lake, Minnesota] band of Anishinaabe harvesting wild rice on the Bois Forte Reservation in northern Minnesota; and Anishinaabe (Chippewa/Ojibwa) Pinery Indian Cemetery in L'Anse, Michigan.
Arrangement:
The photographs are arranged in folders and oversize boxes according to subject matter.
Biographical / Historical:
David Grant Noble is a professional photographer, author, and editor living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After attending Yale University, Noble served in the U.S. Army in 1962 where he began his photography career.

In 1970, Noble was shooting street photography when he befriended Mohawk ironworkers constructing a building at Park Avenue and 53rd Street in New York City. They invited him to document their work including photographing them many stories above street level.

From 1971-1989, Noble worked at the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Santa Fe where he photographed and studied American southwest archaeological ruins, cliff dwellings, rock art, and landscapes. His books include Ancient Ruins of the Southwest: an Archaeological Guide, Search of Chaco: New Approaches to an Archaeological Enigma, and In the Places of the Spirits.

Noble's photographs are in the collections of numerous public institutions including Yale University's Beinecke Library, Museum of New Mexico, and New York City Public Library. He is also the recipient of the 2011 Emil Haury Award from the Western National Parks Association and the 2003 Victor Stoner Award from the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society.

The collection consists of negatives and photographs made by Halseth from 1920 to 1925 in Arizona and New Mexico.
Scope and Contents:
The collection consists of negatives and photographs made by Halseth from 1920 to 1925 in Arizona and New Mexico. The materials are primarily informal, outdoor group and individual portraits of Akimel O'odham (Pima), Diné (Navajo), Yoeme (Yaqui) [Pascua Yaqui], Piipaash (Maricopa), K'apovi (Santa Clara Pueblo), Zia Pueblo, San Ildefonso Pueblo, Jemez Pueblo, Cochiti Pueblo, Kewa (Santo Domingo Pueblo), and Tesuque Pueblo men, women, and children. In addition among the Akimel O'odham photographs are depictions of dwellings, potters, ladle makers, baskets, the construction of an oven, food preparation, dwellings, and mattress factory wokers; among the K'apovi ceremonials and village views; among the Zia pottery and portraits of and paintings by Velino Shije Herrera; among the Jemez ceremonials and village views; among Kewa ovens; and among San Ildefonso village views and paintings by Awa Tsireh. The collection also includes photogrpahs depicting the pictographs at Puye.

Biographical/Historical note:
Born in 1893 in Moss, Norway, Halseth was an anthropologist, museum director, educator, author, art critic, and lecturer. As a young man he studied electrical engineering and anthropology in Germany and served both Norway and the United States during World War I. While in San Diego for military training, he met archaeologist Edgar L. Hewett and after the war accepted a position with Hewett as the curator of art at the San Diego Museum. In 1923, he moved to Santa Fe, where he was on both the staff of the School of American Research and the Museum of New Mexico. After four years, Halseth was appointed director of the newly established Arizona Museum in Phoenix and in 1929 initiated the excavation of the Pueblo Grande Indian ruins and founded the Pueblo Grande Museum. Halseth was also Phoenix's head archaeologist and superintendent of the city's Division of Archaeology. Active in his field, Halseth was a fellow of the American Anthropological Association, a member of the Society of American Archaeology, and the author of numerous publications on Arizona archaeology and indigenous arts and crafts. He retired in 1960.

Includes images from the excavations at Hawikku near Zuni Pueblo and Basketmaker's Cave in Kane County, Utah, as well as objects found at Cave Lakes, also in Kane County, Utah. Biographical/Historical note:
Jesse L. Nusbaum, a long-time archaeologist and administrator for the National Park Service and recipient of the Distinguished Service ward from the Department of the Interior (1954), began his career as a teacher, attending Colorado Teachers College in Greeley, where he received his Bachelor of Pedagogy in 1907. He then moved to Las Vegas to teach science and manual arts at New Mexico State Normal School. Later that year, he made his first connection with Mesa Verde as a photographer and archeological assistant to A. V. Kidder; Nusbaum spent the next year working as an assistant to the archeologist. In June of 1909 he became the first employee of the School of American Archeology and Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe under Dr. Edgar L. Hewett. Nusbaum traveled to Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Colorado, and New Mexico where he undertook archeological surveys, investigations, excavations, and ruins stabilization.

Nusbaum's work at the museum brought him back to Mesa Verde for the excavation, repair, and stabilization of the Balcony House, a project which extended into the winter of 1910. In 1913, he supervised the completion of the New Mexico Palace of Governors in Santa Fe and worked in the Mayan ruins of the Yucatan with Dr. S. G. Morley. He then supervised the construction of the state art museum from 1916 to 1918. Nusbaum enlisted during World War I in the hopes of becoming an aviator, but instead he became an engineer and served in France until his discharge in 1919. After the war, Nusbaum moved to New York City and worked at the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. While Nusbaum was working in New York he took part in several expeditions to the Southwest, including those at Hawikku (Hawikuh) Pueblo and Basketmaker Cave.

In 1921, while still in New York, he was selected by Stephen Mather and Arno Cammerer to become superintendent at Mesa Verde National Park. Director Mather had become disgusted with the conditions that had developed there under a political superintendent. Nusbaum was a very effective superintendent, advancing the development of the park and preserving the archeological resources. He discontinued grazing, built a museum and developed good interpretive programs, especially ones designed to explain the Antiquities Act. His involvement with the Act led to his designation in 1927 as the lead archeologist and prime enforcer of the Act for the Southwest (while remaining Mesa Verde superintendent).

Nusbaum continued this dual capacity until 1930, when he took a leave of absence to organize and direct the Laboratory of Anthropology at Santa Fe, New Mexico. He continued as director of the laboratory until 1935, having earlier returned to the Park Service and resumed his dual duties as Mesa Verde superintendent and Department of the Interior archeologist enforcing the Antiquities Act. Nusbaum continued this dual position for many years. In 1946 he left Mesa Verde and his dual role for Santa Fe. At the National Park Service office there, he took up increased duties as the senior archeologist of the National Park Service. In this capacity, Nusbaum began one of the first salvage archeology projects when he persuaded El Paso Natural Gas Company to allow archeological excavation along their pipelines. After a year's extension Nusbaum was forced to retire from the NPS at the age of 71 in 1957. However, he continued to do consulting work for many years. He died in Santa Fe in December 1975, at the age of 88.

Scope and Contents:
From the start, Hersh considered photography integral to the realization of her objectives for her unfinished book about Native Southwest jewelers. The photographs in this collection were made for the purposes of illustrating Hersh's book. She accounted for photography costs in her Ford Foundation grant application and upon securing Foundation funding in June of 1975 immediately hired Nancy Lensen-Tomasson. Together the two made several trips around Arizona and New Mexico to photograph jewelry and native jewelers on location. Lensen-Tomasson used a Hasselblad 2 ¼ camera for this work; the Ford Foundation or Hersh paid for all film and processing fees.

Under the guidance of Hersh, Lensen-Tomasson photographed individual pieces of jewelry, jewelry modeled by Native community members, portraits of jewelers wearing their work, and several series of various jewelers working at their benches. The jewelers provided the names of prospective models (who, along with the jewelers, signed release forms), and Hersh provided clothing for them. Most of the models were high school students. The jewelers themselves chose examples of their work for photography and were apparently pleased to pose wearing their jewelry for the camera. From a vast body of work produced by Lensen-Tomasson, the photographs and negatives in the Hersh collection were particularly chosen by Hersh for the purposes of her book. She took possession of the negatives in order to restrict their use. Lensen-Tomasson retained the remainder of the negatives.
Arrangement:
The photographs series consists of five subseries, arranged alphabetically by culture group and followed by a subseries for miscellaneous and unidentified photographs. Each subseries is arranged alphabetically by jeweler name, when known, and each photographic print (both color and black & white) has an NMAI inventory number assigned to it. For some prints, NMAI owns the original negative. The negatives have also been assigned NMAI inventory numbers and the prints are cross referenced to them. Most of the photographs in the Hopi, Santo Domingo, and Zuni subseries have also been described on an item level in NMAI's collections database.
Biographical note:
In June 1975, Hersh hired photographer Nancy Lensen-Tomasson; between 1975 and 1980 the two made a number of trips around Arizona and New Mexico to photograph jewelry and jewelers on location.

Born Nancy Lensen in 1931, Lensen-Tomasson received her BA in Art History from Wellesley in 1953 and an MA in Photography from the University of New Mexico in 1973. During her collaboration with Hersh, Lensen-Tomasson was a graduate student in the fine arts at the University of New Mexico. In 1978, she received an MFA in photography from the University of New Mexico and went on to teach photography at Virginia Commonwealth University for seventeen years. She completed photo-documentary work in Africa (Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Ghana, and Togo) and in Russia. Her work is represented in such collections as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, Louisiana; the Museum of New Mexico, Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico; the Russian Union of Art Photographers, Moscow, Russia; Museum of Art, University of Oklahoma, Norman; Northlight Gallery, Arizona State University, Tempe; and the Handwerker Gallery, Itaca College, Ithaca, New York.
