"The pyramid field of Meroe was huge and crowded. It was in fact divided into the West Cemetery, the South Cemetery and the North Cemetery. Situated on the east bank of the Nile, the town of Meroë consisted of several royal palaces and the temple of Amun (Amon). The design of the reliefs found at Meroë suggest that the Meroë played a strong role in spreading Egyptian influences and iconographic innovations. Meroë flourished until the late 4th century CE." [The J.P.Getty Fund: Thesaurus of Geographic Names]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from January 8, 1947 to end of June 1947.
