Content Description:
The collection depicts Basotho, Hausa, Makonde, Matabele, Pedi, Swazi, and Xhosa peoples in Lesotho, Nigeria, South Africa, Swaziland, and Tanzania. Images show agricultural work, architecture, carving, cooking, landscapes, mountains, and portraits, among other subjects. Highlights of the collection include Makonde carvers at work in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Hausa peoples tie dying at indigo dye pits in Kano, Nigeria, and house decorations in South Africa and Lesotho including Bataung houses decorated with stone mosaics.

Biographical / Historical:
Dr. George F. Rohrmann is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Microbiology at Oregon State University. His field of specialization is Virology.

This collection is comprised of photographs collected by William W. Brill to document his personal collection of African art objects, which primarily contains masks, sculpted figures, and tools.
Scope and Contents:
This collection is comprised of photographs collected by William W. Brill to document his personal collection of African art objects, which primarily contains masks, sculpted figures, and tools. Masks documented are from the following peoples: Hemba, Lulua, Makonde, and Bbagani. Sculptural figures shown were created by the following groups: Bassa, Dogon, Kulango, Kuyu, Loma, Luba, Lunda, Punu, and Tabwa. Other objecs shown include an Asante comb, Asante royal staff, Baule animal head, Bete heddle pulley, Chokwe comb, Ijo staff, Kuba headrest, Lele staff, Ndengese axe handle, Senufo ceremonial container, Senufo wine strainer, Yela staff, Yoruba house post, Zulu comb, and Zulu hunter's staff. There are also images of musical instruments including bells, flutes, and rhythm pounders from Cameroon, Mali, Nigeria, and Zaire. Photographers represented include Tony Fitsch, Al Mozell and Bernard Pierre Wolff.
Biographical / Historical:
William W. Brill (1918-2003) received a B.A. from Yale University and was the president of the Mutual Real Estate Investment Trust in New York. He started collecting African art around 1960 and has donated several art objects to museums.

Summary:
The collection consists of 38 color transparencies, 648 color slides and 10 black-and-white photographic prints taken by Lynn McLaren Demarest while on assignment for various news outlets in the 1950s and 1960s. A majority of the slides and transparencies were taken in East Africa and document indigenous peoples, agriculture (cotton in particular), health and nutrition education, UNICEF activities, architecture, natural landscapes, animals, fishers, coffee plantations and the sisal industry. Locations include Mobassa, Lamu Island, Zanzibar, Dar es Saalam, Lake Victoria, Mount Kilimajaro, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Mikumi National Park (Tanzania). The black-and-white photographs depict East African leaders, such as Julius Nyerere, and prominent international visitors to the region, including Robert Kennedy. A small number of slides and transparencies were taken in India.

Biographical/Historical note:
Lynn McLaren (1922-2008) was a professional photojournalist who worked on assignment for National Geographic, Life, Newsweek and Business Week since the 1950s and 1960s. A member of the Society of Women Geographers, McLaren lived and traveled extensively around the world, photographing peoples and places in Kenya, Tanzania (Zanzibar), India, Nepal, Spain, Germany and the United States. McLaren was also the author of five books, including Berlin and the Berliners and The Village: The People (India), all of which are richly illustrated with her photographs. In 2007, she had a major retrospective of her photography, Fifty Years of Photographs from Around the World, at the Marion Art Center in Marion, Massachusetts.
