Summary:
This consists of twenty-six color photographs taken between November 1944 and December 1945 by Frederick J. Poats in India at Panagar Air Base, and in China at Chengkung, Hangchow, Laohwangping, Luichow, Shanghai, and Suichwan.
Scope and Contents:
This group of 26 color photographs were taken by Frederick J. Poats. Aircraft and a few personnel (Poats, Lt. Leroy Price, and some Chinese) are seen in India at Panagar Air Base, and in China at Chengkung, Hangchow, Laohwangping, Luichow, Shanghai, and Suichwan. Two photos show Lockheed P-38 Lightnings of the 449th Fighter Squadron (449FS). Two photos show Poats' North American P-51D Mustang "Lady Marion" (named for his girlfriend, who became his wife after the war). One photo shows a Consolidated F-7A (s/n 42-64102) of the 24th Combat Mapping Squadron. Other aircraft types depicted include: Lockheed F-5E Lightning, Douglas C-54 Skymaster, captured Japanese "Ida" (Tachikawa Ki-36) in Nationalist China markings, Curtiss C-46 Commando, Douglas C-47 Skytrain, and Republic P-47 (F-47) Thunderbolt.

Biographical / Historical:
Frederick J. Poats joined the 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (118 TRS), 23rd Fighter Group (23 FG), in November 1944. He was stationed in Luliang, China, and assigned to temporary duty assignments with the 26th Fighter Squadron (26 FS) based in Chengkung until the 118 TRS had established themselves at a base in Suichwan, China. Poats was stationed with the 118 TRS from that point on. From World War II's end through mid-December 1945 Poats was involved with ferrying aircraft and materiel for the Chinese government as part of the "Diffenbaugh Project."

This collection consists of 47 images relating to Sherman V. Best, Jr.'s military service and the Martin (Glenn L.) B-26B Marauder (Model 179B) "Flak Bait." All were taken in the European theater during World War II, with the exception of one image taken of "Flak Bait" on display at the National Air and Space Museum. The images are scans made from original prints loaned by the donor. The original prints range in size from approximately 2 by 2.5 inches up to approximately 4 by 5 inches. All the images are black and white, with the exception of one color image. Scans were made at 600 dpi and sized so that the longest side is 6000 pixels. In addition to images of various Martin (Glenn L.) B-26 aircraft including "Flak Bait," aircraft depicted in the photographs include the Douglas C-47 Skytrain and Lockheed P-38 Lightning. People depicted in the photographs include various "Flak Bait" crew members including Best (co-pilot); Henry "Hank" Bozarth (pilot); Russell Bassler (tail gunner); W.J. "Bill" Johnston (engineer gunner); McDonald Darnell, Jr. (radio operator); and Tom Gee. There are also photographs of various other military personnel (some of whom may also have flown on "Flak Bait") including George Lane; Robert M. Jones; A.F. Byrd; Robert F. Whittling; Joe Urbanovsky; and Irv Pincus. Other named aircraft shown in the photographs include Douglas C-47 Skytrain "Dragon Lady" and Martin (Glenn L.) B-26B Marauder (Model 179B) "Lil Maggie."
Biographical / Historical:
Martin (Glenn L.) B-26B Marauder (Model 179B) "Flak Bait" (A19600297000) survived 207 operational missions over Europe, more than any other American aircraft during World War II. "Flak-Bait" was built at the Glenn L. Martin Company's Baltimore, Maryland factory and was completed in April 1943, when it was flown to England. The U.S. Army Air Force assigned it to the 449th Bombardment Squadron, 322nd Bombardment Group (nicknamed the 'Annihilators'), and gave the bomber the fuselage identification codes "PN-O." Sherman V. Best, Jr. was a member of the 449th Bombardment Squadron, 322nd Bombardment Group and served as co-pilot on one of "Flak Bait's" crews.

Biographical / Historical:
This collection consists of two images of a Lockheed aircraft. The first is an in-flight view of Lockheed Model 2D Vega (A/C No. N965Y) in the red and white livery of Varney Speed Lines, Inc (also marked "Now Continental Airlines") most likely during the aircraft's national publicity tour in 1964. The second was taken at Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, California circa the early 1940s and shows a Lockheed P-38 Lightning and a Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VA (A/C No. W3119) sitting nose to nose on the runway. Both images are color. There are 4 by 5 inch color transparencies of each image, as well as two prints of each image which measure 20 by 16 inches and are mounted on black display board.

This collection consists of a photo album and a scrapbook kept by Benjamin Scovill "Ben" Kelsey to document his life and aviation career. The collection also includes Kelsey's U. S. Army Air Forces "Air Route Manual: United States to Great Britain," dated May 25, 1942, prepared for use by the first flights of military aircraft across the North Atlantic in support of Operation Bolero.
Scope and Contents:
This collection consists of a photo album and a scrapbook kept by Benjamin Scovill "Ben" Kelsey to document his life and aviation career. The photo album measures approximately 12.25 by 9.5 inches and documents Kelsey's early flying career and other aviation activities he was involved in from the period of about 1920 to 1932. Many of the photographs were taken around Garden City, New York or in and around Connecticut. Aircraft depicted in the album include the Curtiss JN-4 Jenny, Standard (NJ) J-1, Bellanca WB-2 Miss Columbia, Dayton Wright DH-4 Mailplane, Irwin Meteorplane C-C-1, Alexander Eaglerock Biplane, Waco ASO, Martin (Glenn L.) MB-2, Ford 2-AT Air Pullman, Air Transport John Wanamaker, Sikorsky Standard-Sikorsky SN-1, Avro 504, Sikorsky S-31, Sperry Messenger, Burnelli (Remington-Burnelli) RB-1, Curtiss Oriole, Curtiss CR-1 Racer, Udet U 12 Flamingo, as well as numerous other models by manufacturers such as Fokker, Curtiss, Boeing, Stinson, and Sikorsky. Besides Kelsey, other notable aviators pictured in the album include Laura Bromwell, Charles S. "Casey" Jones, Lloyd W. Bertaud, Walter E. Johnson, Earl W. Fleet, Robert Stevens Fogg, Gus Graff, Bertrand Blanchard Acosta, Harold T. "Slim" Lewis, Harry Bradford Chin, Thea Rasche, Richard H. Depew, and Leigh Wade. The album also contains aerial photographs.
The scrapbook, which measures 11 by 16 inches, is mainly composed of newspaper clippings, but also includes magazine articles, photographs, correspondence, certificates and other ephemera. It covers the period of approximately 1934 to 1947 and documents Kelsey's military career during this period. Aircraft seen in the scrapbook include the Curtiss P-36 Hawk, Curtiss P-37 (Hawk 75I), Lockheed XP-38/P-38 Lightning, Douglas XB-19 (XBLR-2), Curtiss CW-21 Interceptor-Fighter, Bell XFM-1 Airacuda, and the Douglas C-54 Skymaster.
The collection also contains a U. S. Army Air Forces document, "Air Route Manual: United States to Great Britain," prepared by Air Movements Unit, Operational Intelligence Section AFDIS – A2, May 25, 1942 (Second Revision). This publication is a pilot's briefing document prepared in support of Operation Bolero. It was designed for use by a Lockheed P-38 Lightning pilot and provides detailed radio and navigational information for all airfields en route (U. S. and Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and the British Isles) including aerial photographs, prepared strip maps marked with the magnetic course to be flown, and general information. It also contains eight large sectional maps, two American Airlines Radio Range and Mileage Charts, and six Ordnance Survey of Great Britain Aeronautical Maps.

C." Li, Jr., a United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) fighter pilot assigned to the unit. Subjects include squadron personnel, aircraft, and local scenes in China. Biographical / Historical:
Kuo Ching "K. C." Li, Jr. was born in Glen Cove, New York, in 1921, the son of Dr. Li Kuo Ching. He attended Friends Academy, Locust Valley, New York, and Kent School in Connecticut. Li studied engineering at Cornell University before enlisting in the Army Air Forces in June, 1942. He received his training at Craig Army Airfield in Selma, Alabama, in December, 1943. Li flew sixty-four missions in his P-51 Mustang "The Vicious Virgin," and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Soldier's Medal, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. After the war, Li received a degree from Swarthmore College. Later, he took over management of his father's company, Wah Chang International Corporation, selling it to Teledyne Inc. (later known as Allegheny Technologies Incorporated) in 1967. Li later opened a restaurant, K.C.'s, on West 10th Street in New York City.
The 16th Fighter Squadron was constituted on November 20, 1940 as the 16th Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor). Equipped initially with Curtiss P-40 fighters, the squadron was activated at Hamilton Field, California on January 15, 1941. Assigned to the Tenth Air Force, the squadron deployed to the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater in March 1942. The squadron initially defended the Indian terminus of the vital "Hump" airlift route over the Himalayas between India and China, operating from the Assam Valley of northeast India. The squadron flew strafing, bombing, reconnaissance, and patrol missions in support of Allied ground troops during a Japanese offensive in northern Burma in 1943. In October 1943, the 16th Fighter Squadron was assigned to the Fourteenth Air Force and redeployed to southeast China for the defense of the Chinese end of the Hump and the air bases in the Kunming area. In 1944, the squadron was reequipped with North American P-51 Mustangs. The squadron returned to India in the fall of 1945 and sailed for the United States in November. The 16th Fighter Squadron was deactivated on December 13, 1945.
