Image taken by Edward Heim features exhibition installation at the Leonard Clayton Gallery (1921). Inscribed in pen on front of photograph: My Gallery at 161 Columbus. NYC. 1921. To Dr. Jack and Shirley Mandel with all my love from Leonard Clayton (1971); in lower left of image is photographer's label: Leonard Clayton Gallery 161 Columbus Av. N.Y. On back of photograph is stamped: Edward Heim Photo-Maker 67 West 67th St. New York.
Biographical / Historical:
Art Gallery, New York, N.Y. Leonard Clayton founded the Leonard Clayton Art Gallery in New York, City when he took over the Marie Sterner Gallery. Later with his niece, Mary C. Liberatore, they established the Clayton-Liberatore Gallery. (The Clayton-Liberatore Gallery records are housed in the Archives of American Art collections).
Provenance:
Donated 2002 by Shirley Mandel. Leonard Clayton gave the photograph to Shirley Mandel and her late husband, Jack. Mrs. Mandel, a member of Archives of American Art was moving and donated the image.

REEL 118: Correspondence with friends, art institutions and business associates, mainly concerning exhibitions. Also included are biographical information; exhibition catalogs; price lists and announcements; poems and articles by Eliasoph; photographs of her and her paintings; clippings; and sketches.
REEL 34: CHILDE HASSAM: HANDBOOK OF THE COMPLETE SET OF ETCHINGS AND DRYPOINTS by Eliasoph, published by the Leonard Clayton Gallery, Inc., N.Y., 1933 and annotated by Childe Hassam, with a statement by Eliasoph.
UNMICROFILMED: Correspondence, including 2 letters from John Howard Griffin, exhibition announcements and catalogs including CHILDE HASSAM AS PRINTMAKER, clippings, writings, photographs of Eliasoph's artwork and husband, and 4 sketches, including one of Abraham Walkowitz, signed by him.
REEL 439 AND SCANNED One photograph of Eliasoph, taken by G. Maillard Kesslere, was previously microfilmed under Photos of Artists I, but has since been scanned and returned to the Eliasoph papers.

Victor Hall, Childe Hassam, Russell Iredell, William J. Scott, Augustus Vincent Tack, Hilda Taylor, and others; and printed materials consisting of art reproductions, books and booklets, clippings, and exhibition catalogs. Many of the files throughout the collection contain material created by Marie Sterner and the Marie Sterner Gallery.

Arrangement:
The collection is arranged as three series.

Series 1: Administrative Records, 1921-1980 (Box 1; 0.8 linear feet)

Series 2: Artist's Files, 1920-1968 (Boxes 1-3, OV 6; 2.1 linear feet)

Series 3: Printed Materials, 1889-1977 (Boxes 3-5; 1.0 linear feet)
Biographical / Historical:
The Clayton-Liberatore Gallery operated in Bridgehampton, Long Island, New York. The gallery's owner, Leonard Clayton, was the founder of the Leonard Clayton Gallery in New York City. Clayton took over the Marie Sterner Gallery and later ran the gallery with his niece, Mary C. Liberatore, under the name Clayton-Liberatore Gallery. The gallery represented artists such as Childe Hassam, Augustus Vincent Tack, and Hilda Taylor among others.
