Summary:
Photographs of art objects collected by Maxwell C., 1904-1984, and Betty Stanley. The Stanley's had begun to collect African art objects during a business trip to West Africa in the 1960s, and they gradually acquired nearly 600 pieces. The objects are found today in the University of Iowa Museum. Events documented include official government ceremonies with staged indigenous dances; rituals in villages such as young members of the female sande society returning from the initiation camp; and visits by foreign heads of state such as Queen Elizabeth II and Josip Broz Tito of Yoguslavia. Art works include figures, masks, musical instruments, sculptures and staffs.

"The Lega village (kyumo) is traditionally built on a hill in a more or less natural clearing 'kilungulabo' of primary rain forest. It consists of two parallel rows (mikeke) of contiguous huts, a plan that creates an impression of longhouses. The open space (mulungu) between the two rows of houses serves as main street, a dance floor, and a public place." [Biebuyck D., 1973: Lega Culture. University of California Press]. During his trip to Congo (now Democratic Republic of Congo), Elisofon visited the Lega people at Shabunda and its surroundings in the Maniema district. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Broadcasting Company and traveled to Africa from early December 1966 to early February 1967.

The photograph depicts Lusolo, a lutumbo lwa kindi (the highest grade in Bwami association) of the Beiamunsange clan (Biebuyck 1973, 270), wearing an unusual hat of black goat manes known as sawamazembe. The hat, worn by men at the kindi level, duplicates a woman's mazembe hairstyle. Attached to the front are mussel shells that publicly proclaim the status of the wearer. In this instance the mussel shell that usually identifies the wearer's high rank has been replaced with buttons (Cameron 2001, 74). The necklace is made of imitation leopard teeth carved from elephant bones (Biebuyck 1973, 270). During his trip to Congo (now Democratic Republic of Congo), Elisofon visited the Lega people at Pangi and its surroundings in the Maniema district. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for American Broadcasting Company and traveled to Africa from early December 1966 to early February 1967.
