These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. An overview to the entire Warshaw collection is available here: Warshaw Collection of Business Americana
Scope and Contents:
This material consists primarily of printed advertisements, scattered correspondence on letterhead stationery, advertising cards, postcards, pamphlets, price lists and installation instructions from manufacturers and dealers of dish washing machines. Some of these products are hand held appliances. The appliances are operated by electricity, steam and gas. Most of the dishwashers are manufactured for home use. There are a few advertisements for commercial dish washers. Rather for home or commercial use, advertisements stress the labor saving importance of dishwashers, emphasizing the features that sterilize, dry and polish dishes. These features, plus the elimination of soap and dish towels heightens the diminished use of manual labor. The reduction of contact with soap and the lessened hardship on delicate hands was especially aimed at the housewife. Some of the advertisements listed satisfied customers and their addresses. Most of the advertisements include images of the dishwasher.

There are a few publication s concerning dishwashing. The Department of Bacteriology and Public Health published a research bulletin in 1949 on studies on dishwashing. The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company also produced a pamphlet as part of its series of health books. The pamphlet offers work-saving suggestions to housewives with an emphasis on dishwashing.

The material dates from 1891-1950 but the bulk is early twentieth century.

Time on Our Hand The development of timekeeping, from sundials to clocks, watches, chronometers and even atomic clocks has depended on advances in technology. Glass pitchers are formed and decorated on an assembly line; parts of furniture are cut by machine and then the craftsman puts the furniture together; quick drying lacquer on automobiles saves production time. Housewives save time by using kitchen appliances, especially a dishwasher. Through mechanization Americans have more leisure time and can enjoy such activities as riding the cog railroad to the top of Mount Washington, NH.
