Series 2, dated circa 1970-2011 and undated, documents Rankin's work with the Kaw (Kansa, Kanza) language. Materials include field notebooks, vocabulary slip files and word lists, dictionary drafts, correspondence, ephemera, and 35 sound recordings.
Rankin began his work with the Kaw (Kansa, Kanza) language in 1973-1974 working with the few native speakers that remained at the time including Ralph Pepper, Maude Rowe, and Walter Kekahbah. Rowe reciting the Lord's Prayer in Kaw, along with grammar and vocabulary notes from Pepper, Rowe, and Kekahbah are reflected the sound recordings and paper documentation in this series. Materials also include subject files on the tribe and language and material in support of lexicons and dictionaries Rankin helped develop.
