Scope and Contents note:
Photographs collected by Emma A. Koch documenting the people and natural and built environments in India, South Asia, and Australia. The collection largely consists of images of East Indian peoples, structures, scenery, and activities, including tea making and entertainment; areas of India most commonly depicted are Assam, Bengal, and the Andaman Islands. Additional photographs portray people, architecture, and scenery in Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Tibet, and Australia. Most of the photographs were likely taken by Samuel Bourne and Charles Shepherd (Bourne & Shepherd), with some made by Scowen & Co., Shepherd & Robertson, Benjamin F. Simpson, Reynolds, and Ganey.

Scope and Contents:
Collection consists of films by geologist William O. Field of the Nile River, Kashmir, the U.S.S.R., Moscow, and Samoa. The collection also includes 8 albums of still photographs and 8 albums of negatives of Africa, photographs of British Guiana, folders with paper materials relating to the Africa expedition/film, miscellaneous photographs and other papers.

Please note that the contents of the collection and the language and terminology used reflect the context and culture of the time of its creation. As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today. Scope and Contents note:
Photographs made and collected by James Reid Graham during his travels in India and Asia. They document the people, the natural and built environments, religious shrines and objects (including Buddhist, Hindu, and Catholic representations), transportation (including by yak, donkey, boat, airplane, and ricksha), games (particularly polo and field hockey), gatherings, and crafts.

The photographs depict locations in northern India and Pakistan, southern India and Ceylon, Egypt, Greece, Israel and Palestine, Syria, Hong Kong, Japan, Hawaii, and possibly Yale University.

Some photographs by Ralph Randles Stewart, a botanist who worked at Gordon College from 1911-1954; Reverend Henri R. Ferger, a missionary and teacher for the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions in India; and K. L. Malhotra. Includes postcards by Sarrafian Bros, Isaac Behar, Karimeh Abbud, Michel Harriz, Albertype Co., Asheville Postcard Co., Dexter Press, Lehnert & Landrock, Honolulu Paper Co., Collotype Co., Mahatta & Co., Island Curio Co., and H. A. Mirza & Sons.
Biographical/Historical note:
James Reid Graham was as a Presbyterian missionary at Gordon College in Rawalpindi, Punjab (1929-1932). His doctoral dissertation for the Yale University Department of Religion was "The Arya Samaj as a Reformation in Hinduism, with Special Reference to Caste," submitted in 1943.
