Sketches, photographs, notes, a scrapbook, and printed material.
REEL 2787: A notebook containing sketches and notes on the completion of the Willard Parker Hospital mural, New York City, which Sakari Suzuki painted with the assistance of Berntsen for the Federal Arts Project in 1936-1938; and 9 photographs of the Willard Parker mural, 2 of which show Suzuki and 2 of Suzuki and Berntsen at work. The Willard Parker Hospital was later demolished.
UNMICROFILMED: A chronology of Berntsen's career; 24 sketches in pencil and in pen and ink of ironworkers and construction workers, ca. 1933-1934, and of visitors to the National Gallery where Berntsen was a guard, ca. 1966-1971; three letters from Bernsten to his wife Alma, 1947-1952; loose newspaper clippings, ca. 1933-1985, and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings (in Norwegian and English) concerning Berntsen's involvement with the Norwegian Art and Craft Club, and his paintings and sketches of workers at construction sites where he worked as an ironworker, ca. 1931-1976; two exhibition announcements, 1964 and 1986; photographs, ca. 1933-1987, mostly snapshots, include Berntsen painting, Bernsten in his National Gallery of Art guard uniform with Chief Justice Earl Warren, one of students and faculty of the Art Students League (ca. 1933-1934), one of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in New York, several of Berntsen and Suzuki at work on the Willard Parker Hospital mural, ca. 1938, of events sponsored by the Norwegian Art and Craft Club, and of works of art. Also included are photocopies of works of art.
Biographical / Historical:
Painter, mural painter, ironworker; Chicago, Ill., New York, N.Y. and Va. Born in Oslo, Norway. Berntsen also was the model for the laborer who stands behind Lenin in the controversial Diego Rivera mural for Radio City Music Hall.
Provenance:
Material on reel 2787 transferred from the National Collection of Fine Arts, who received it from Berntsen, 1975. Unmicrofilmed material donated 1993 and 2002 by Berntsen's great-grandson, Cliff Miller.

Scope and Contents:
The folder includes a worksheet, historical pictures and information regarding previous owners, historical timeline of property, planting lists, planting plans, and landscape design.
General:
Afterglow Farm was established in 1929 on 119 acres in southeastern Wisconsin along Lake Michigan, and is still owned by members of the family. The house and outbuildings were designed in a Germanic style and built from timber and native stone. Originally some of the gardens were planted in food crops that were preserved in a root cellar for winter. Today Afterglow Farm runs a CSA (community supported agriculture) program, growing organic fruits and vegetables and eggs for local subscribers. An "engineered wetlands" was built alongside the CSA fields circa 2000 to clean waste water from the house and barn for reuse in the gardens, with a hillside planted with native wildflowers and grasses for filtration and water storage. The water is moved through troughs to various gardens, a recent innovation in land stewardship and sustainability that have always been important values for the owners of Afterglow Farm.
A former horse paddock was transformed into an ornamental circle in the cottage garden style circa 1930, and today has perennials, flowering trees and shrubs, bulbs and native wildflowers that provide blooms for spring, summer and fall. Other ornamental beds were designed in the New American Style, with sweeping planted beds of single species, using cultivars and native plants that are deer resistant. A new, fenced fruit orchard supplies the CSA members with apples and pears.
Ironwork gates and ornamental panels, and two bear sculptures were designed by the original owner. An old German poem is painted above the door of the farmhouse, which loosely translates to "This house is mine yet not mine. Whoever lived here before, it is not his. Whoever comes after me must also leave sometime. So tell me dear friend, whose house is this?"

Although the exact location of this garden is not known, it may have been in northern New Jersey. It is known that it was designed by Nelva M. Weber and was included in her 1976 book, How to Plan Your Own Home Landscape. A well-established garden at the time these images were taken, the site included elaborate ironwork, a pergola, a pool, intricately patterned brick walkways, and a circular lawn surrounded by perennial and shrub borders.

Summary:
A New York bookseller, Warshaw assembled this collection over nearly fifty years. The Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Iron forms part of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Subseries 1.1: Subject Categories. The Subject Categories subseries is divided into 470 subject categories based on those created by Mr. Warshaw. These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. Scope and Contents:
Iron and steel are companion industries so there is overlap in the products and goods manufactured and sold, which is evident in the documents. Iron was commonly used in construction as well as ornamental application in architecture and art, especially facades and sculptures, in addition to landscape and cemetery design, particularly in fencing. Some applications include bridges, concrete supports, joists, grating, casements, stairs, railings, trellises, doors, seats and other furniture, vases, vanes, shutters, posts, and fire escapes. Bar, plates, pig iron, cast iron, ore, and steel are commonly referred to in the collection materials. The emphasis is on products rather than production methods.
Materials represent a sampling of business records such as invoices, financial sheets, correspondence and a small number of advertising and promotional circulars. There are price sheets and a few product catalogs. Several company/foundry histories and prospectus documents are present. There is a large volume of import/export documents (European) present.
No extensive runs or complete records exist for any single company or brand, and no particular subtopic is represented in detail, although for any singular subtopic though some publications may provide general and historical overviews of a person, company, or facet of industry.

Provenance:
Iron is a portion of the Business Ephemera Series of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Accession AC0060, purchased from Isadore Warshaw in 1967. Warshaw continued to accumulate similar material until his death, which was donated in 1971 by his widow, Augusta. For a period after acquisition, related materials from other sources (of mixed provenance) were added to the collection so there may be content produced or published after Warshaw's death in 1969. This practice has since ceased.
