Collection Creator:
Davies, R. E. G. (Ronald Edward George)  Search this
Type:
Archival materials
Date:
1998
Scope and Contents:
The story of aviation through the years in Hong Kong. How a tiny spot on the map developed into one of the world's aviation centers. The story of an airport like no other, Kai Tak. The men who established it and the entrepreneurs who developed the routes to connect Europe and America to Asia from Britain's imperial airways to the arrivial of the fabled flying boats in Hong Kong harbor. The birth of Cathay Pacific from the early swashbuckling days to the present. And of course Kai Tak itself, the growth from hardly more than an airstrip reclaimed from the sea, through the creation of an audacious runway protruding 8000 feet into the sea. The program includes unique footage of early Kai Tak and its planes, exclusive interviews with those early Pioneersand a front row seat for the electrifying approach into Kai Tak. With the closing of Kai Tak airport in 1998 and the opening of Chek Lap Kok this program is the ultimate tribute to aviation in Hong Kong. Narrated by Andrew Harrey. Film type: Color; Sound; VHS; Run Time: 00:50:00.
