Scope and Contents:
"Not far from the very old Coptic Quarter of the Hāret Zuweyla is the Hāret Yahūd which has been the Quarter of the Jews since Fātimid times; this is on the site of part of Kafūr's garden. In the early 1980s most of Cairo's Jewish community either emigrated to Israel or moved north to the city's more central districts decades ago." [Russell D., 1963: Medieval Cairo and the Monasteries of the Wādi Natrūn. Weidenfeld and Nicolson]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.

The photograph depicts sign commemorating a place where Henri Morton Stanley camped on his way to rescue a British garrison under siege at Juba, southern Sudan, by the forces of the Mahdi. "Elmina Castle (Castelo de Sao Jorge da Mina), Fort St. Jago (Fort Coenraadsburg), the old town site, and the nineteenth-century buildings of the modern town make Elmina a unique, collective historic monuments. Today, marine fishing using beach seine nets, the ali net, and the more recent purse seine nets used by trawlers is a key aspect of coastal life, with the months between June and September being particularly productive for fishermen." [DeCorse Ch., 2001: An Archaeology of Elmina. Smithsonian Institution Press]. During his trip to Ghana, Elisofon visited Cape coast, Accra, Besease, the Kumasi area, and Elmina. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
